Because governments love to spend other peoples money. The GST was put in place by Mulroney in the 1980s as a "temporary" tax until Canada gained control of it's debt. That was approx. 40 years ago. It will never go away.
Argentina and the U.S are slicing deep into their spending and federal agencies. This should happen in Canada but it cannot thanks to the broad security industrial complex that meddles in our workplaces, schools and general economy.

I hope people realize just how laughable this is. I spent $120.29 on a small order of groceries yesterday. The amount of HST I paid was $3.64 and the ONLY items on my receipt that were taxed were non-food items. This “break” would have saved me exactly $0.00 on my groceries yesterday. 🙄

You won't save much if you aren't spending much money on the "extras" in life. Xmas is coming but not all Canadians celebrate Xmas so I dont think it is a good reason for it.
