I was thinking while watching that he still has the -1 Perception, but this game allows him to balance it out with his +10 Intelligence. He made some spectacularly accurate deductions about the main plot while he was missing obvious things right in front of him!

@@iOhadRubin For me he was super easy becuase I already knew those tattoos were from a South Pacific culture, and there was only one crewman from there, but if you don't know that it's way harder.

I remember Dan playing this, and literally begging people to play it themselves before watching anyone else. Its been quite a while but now, well, here we are. Jon, PLEASE keep playing this flipping thing.
I like how 90% of Jon's ability to identify people boils down to "Bald Y/N?" and "Fancy hats".

Jon, I've watched you for years, and this is one of my all time favorite games, so I went into this video worried, but....bloody heck if you weren't actually _really_ rather good at it.!
I mean, you had some pretty out there errors, but you caught most of them really quickly, and you actually caught some decently subtle details and made some good guesses to get 9 fates quickly. (In particular, the 3rd mate's steward was a good catch.)
Speaking as a fan of this game, A, yes yes yes show more of it, and B....don't rush through it. Savor it. Enjoy it. This is a game you can really only play once, and there is _nothing_ else like it on the market.
Oh, and don't spoil yourself. On any of it. It's worth taking the time. Everything is solvable. You _can_ solve all the fates without blindly guessing. (Although there may be some times where you'll fall back on it.) Seriously, this one is special. Treat it as such.
This was the fastest I've ever smashed a like button, and I'm already looking forward to the next part.

I really love that guy - from the moment you see his corpse you are told you can identify him, his tattoos are the most obvious thing ever... but so few people seem to connect the tattoos and the time period (when tattoos were culturally significant) to reach the conclusion that the tattoos identify his ethnicity. Maybe it's because I'm Australian and we are exposed to the tribal stuff from our part of the globe more than folks in Europe and North America are? Dunno 🤔
I'm actually afraid of British peoples' imagery of the French.

I would really love to see a series of this, a lot. Though I would actually like it to be a regular series as opposed to a live stream as the live stream has a lot of interruptions and this played really well with just Jon sleuthing it.

This game is perfect for Jon because he's basically just identifying hats not people
For someone with a negative perception, jon makes a surprisingly competent detective. Must be the maxed out intelligence compensating for it. Well done!

1:04:50 - Why do so many people (at least in the LPs I've seen) never instantly get Brennan? That him and Hoscut are buddies is the first thing you learn in the game, then in this scene Hoscut yells; "Brennan get the surgeon's kit", and you find him down the hall with his hand to his ear as he hears his name called.
Yes! Full Obra Dinn series! I don't get to play many triple A games so I love it when Jon covers some of my favorite Indies. This was the best new game I played this year by far
Or maybe livestream walkthrough, with all the chat mayhem, who knows. The game surely deserves continuation with all of its intricate plot twists and overall mystery.
Just a note: you want the gunner's store to be below the waterline because then there's less chance of hot metal ending up in your powder magazine during a fight.
Oh this is going to be great. Let's see Jon's skill in deductive reasoning. Either way this is a real solid game. 5:30 yes Jon. Ships did have a sort of bathroom. Mostly in the form of a sort of wooden outhouse at the back at the side of the ship.
Edit 2: Jon for the love of my sanity please pay attention to the dialog. It contains more clues then you might think. The first word in the first scene you see is literally "Captain". Making it rather easy to find the murdering gunman. Also when faces are Unblurred you have enough clues to figure out someone's name.

49:19 Yep, the pictures of the crew in the book, are sketches not photographs. The Obra Dinn set out in 1802 and you're investigating it's return in 1807.
The first photographic camera was invented in 1816 or thereabouts.
Also, when you're reading any available dialogue written in the book, heard during a "flashback", there's an 'X' next to anything said by the soon-to-be-deceased.
So glad you're playing this game. It was my my game of the year. It's just fantastic, by the end of it I had scribbles and scrunched up bits of paper all over my desk 😁
I love that Jon is playing this logic based game that relies so heavily on perception.
Two 100% non spoiler hints!
First, get a notebook irl.
Second: Ethnicity matters, not only because cultural dress/markings/appearence can identify people, or eliminate them, but because small groups that hang out together all the time tend to come from the same country.
They knew each other in advance, savvy?
Jon is either draw conclusion too early and wont change his mind for ages or cannot draw conclusion from an obvious clue laid in front of his eyes. Well this gonna be good? Or more frustrating?

Not necessarily, it could be a red herring. If I was the surgeon, I might say bring 'my' kit instead of 'the surgeon's' kit, whereas an unrelated person, upon seeing an injury, might ask for the surgeon's kit (presumably gaining the attention of the surgeon too) in the same way that one might ask for a first aid kit.
I really love just how much of Jon's detective work boils down to what kind of hat, if any, the person is wearing.

You know for all the comments about Jon's perception, he's actually been pretty good about putting together the clues he does notice. I've watched a fair few LP's of this where say people are like who could this person who's always following around this officer.
Also Jon I imagine you may record the second part before you might read this comment, but the unknown passenger, shipman etc, is actually so you can mark a person's job even if you don't know their identity. Say like hey this guy is in the rigging he's probably a topman so you have that information at hand when he shows up in another scene.
I think having to actually talk aloud about his thought process helps here, because he has to slow down enough to form words.
The editing makes this good to watch.
@1:24:20 I made the exact same assumption about tattoo guy. That's one of the deaths I was most confused about. All the clues fit, but I think the game is deliberately sending you down the wrong path. Don't worry about the bosun by the way, he's armless.

As a huge age of sail era ship nerd, that ship makes me happy. Typically fictitious ships are modelled after the Vasa, a ship that sunk during its maiden voyage before it could even leave sight of its port, so seeing a frigate style of ship rather than a huge over the top Galleon is a nice change.
I think the "unknown" things in the list is for your identification, not an actual unknown person. So if you know a person is a passenger but not certain which, you pick "unknown passenger", and if you see someone in a fancy hat but are uncertain about their position, you pick "unknown officer" and can identify further from there.

Good job! The Bosun's mate is one of the hardest people to figure out in this game, and most people solve him pretty much dead last. But you solved him right at the earliest point you can solve him at, without relying on the biggest clue for his identity (that being that he's wearing a French sailor shirt).
It's worth noting that the "Unknown X" are there so you can narrow people down -- if you know someone is an officer but don't know which, you can mark them as Unknown Officer. There's one for each major category -- Unknown Officer, Unknown Midshipman, Unknown Passenger, Unknown Topman, Unknown Sailor, etc.

5:25: No, they did not have bathrooms. They STILL don't have bathrooms. They had heads. Nowadays, we have nice sewer systems and hot and cold potable water aboard ship. In the 18th century, it was basically a small room with a bench in it. The bench had a hole over it that extended over the side of the ship.

I've both played the game myself and seen it on multiple channels and yet I still enjoy watching it and comparing other's way of thinking to mine.

34:31: The powder in question is black powder. Back then, it was made out of charcoal, sulfur, and potassium nitrate, AKA saltpeter. Modern day "black powder" is made out of a mixture of nitrocellulose and nitro-guanine. Modern day powder is also FAR more stable than the original recipe. Seeing as how fire or impact posed a major risk for ships during the age of sale, the gunpowder was often stored below the waterline. If a fire started, this made it possible to flood the lower deck to extinguish the fire, while also providing additional protection from impact.

I saw this game around last year, but didn't know what to do with it so I ignored it. but you can get me to watch basically anything, and boy, what a fun trip this is!

It was literally the last thing I did. I pretty much forgot that the note existed for the whole game
To my great shame, I discovered that one when I rage-quit about 8 hours in and received the reply to my very low-quality report 😂 On the bright side, I saw all 3 endings to the game as a result of rage quitting, curiosity, and actually finally finishing my damn insurance report. This game is so awesome ❤️🐙

The Gunners Store would have been below the gundeck because if gunpowder gets shot it blows up, gundeck having all the magazine on it would compromise the safety of everyone aboard, as well as the safety of the ship itself.
I would love to see you beat this game, it'll be hard but you seem to be catching most of the subtle hints the game gives you so I'm confident

I don't think that gunners would be wearing "fancy hats". There jobs were dirty, chaotic, and not especially glamorous. I would have thought someone wearing the top hat would have been a passenger. The others with the bicorns and tricorns would have been higher ranking individuals according to the traditions of the times. As well as the very noticeable uniforms which would also be worn by higher ranking people.
Why would they mutiny when a monster is tearing the boat apart? Wouldn't they all just want to abandon ship?
Oh I was wondering if this would show up here. I saw Nerd3 (pretty sure it was him) do a short video on this a while back, I've been meaning to play it since then but haven't. Though I am tempted to see how this plays with the -1 perception thing ;)
It's very interesting watching other people sleuth through this. I worked out William Hoscot by his scottish accent in the clip rather than the brother/sister link. Interesting how different people respond to different clues!

Oh nice this is a fantastic game! I'm sure this will be an interesting LP, but knowing Jon, I also have a feeling that at times it will be extremely infuriating to watch him try to piece all of this together as well. :)
