I just bought an Altacel Go Flip 3, I haven’t activated it yet but it was $55 on ebay and it’s $15 a month on t-mobile connect with 2gb. This is an affordable way for anyone to try this 30 day challenge. Also the Go flip 3 has Voice to Text which is a lifesaver over t9 & google maps.
Raul, I totally agree! And, thank you for the thoughtful comment and helpful recommendation about the Altacel Go Flip 3--voice to text would have been great.
@@TylerLloyd leaving the Google eco system to end up with KaiOs which is owned by Google and has also Google apps on the KaiOs store Is it me or these flip phone detox videos are just bullshit
@@danteerskine7678 well, my point wasn't exactly to leave the Google ecosystem but rather to take a step back and evaluate how I use my phone. What would you do?
@@TylerLloyd apparently you're not using your phone in a proper, if you ever did, you wouldn't feel the need to get a flip phone. Flip phones in question are not simple to use when it comes to the built in functionality. With an Android phone, you could Access Bluetooth, WiFi, data, do not disturb, nearby share by dropping the notification shade without going to the settings. Another cons is their weak battery capacity, removable batteries has a weakness, when dust get on their contactors, they refuse to charge, a problem that non removable battery doesn't face since they're sealed. I actually use 4 recent Android budget devices, the Samsung galaxy A12, the Nokia G10, the redmi 9 prime, and the Oppo A53 and I only have a single WhatsApp account to call my relatives. I don't have any social media since I consider social media as useless bloatwares. There's no privacy possible with social media, However I do have cloud radio apps and Spotify for long time listening sessions. Besides that, I don't use any file sharing apps like shareit or Xender except the built in nearby share. For browsing, I use brave browser and the UC browser which have both built in powerful ads blockers.. I haven't changed my way of using smartphones since my first LG Optimus L5 back in 2012, that's why I don't need any detox and that's why my smartphones with their colossal 5000 mah batteries could last a full week and even more on a single charge. You want something to cure your addiction, that's simple, get an Android Go edition device, these devices are not built for social media or heavy gaming, which will eventually limit your use. The essential are already here like music player, maps, TH-cam, Gmail. I'm a regular user which uses the basic function of a smartphone, that's why I can use my smartphone like a normal phone and for the price, My redmi 9 exceeded all my expectations in terms of a regular usage,
I’ve had a flip phone for over a year now. Best decision I’ve ever made. I have a pretty bad smartphone/internet addiction and this has helped immensely.
That's amazing! Glad the switch has helped you. Since doing this challenge I've made an effort to dumb down my iPhone. It's not a perfect fix, but has helped. Wishing you the best! 😃
Right there with you. I made a lot of efforts to dumb down my smart phone, but it is daily battle of me V. technology designed to keep me looking at it. Here's the video I made about dumbing down my phone, maybe it will be helpful: th-cam.com/video/QCjRM1Vyr0w/w-d-xo.html
Nice video! I think stepping away from technology for a while is a great experiment and is great for your mind. I have lived without a cell phone for 6 years now (minus about 9 months when I had to have one for work) and it is one of the top three best decisions I ever made for my mental health. For me, the pros outweighed the cons. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Six years! Wow. Maybe one day I'll get there. Honestly, I've I could get a "dumb phone" with a full keyboard, mp3 player, and GPS I'd switch for sure. Do you listen to audiobooks or podcasts? If so, what do you use for that?
@@TylerLloyd Yes! I love listening to audio books and podcasts! I listen to them at home on my laptop when I am cooking and cleaning. At first, I really missed being able to plug in while I was on walks and exercising, but after a while I decided to use the time to meditate, decompress, notice my surroundings, and be more available. So now I see being at home as a time for tuning in and learning, and I see being outside as a time for being disconnected from external pressures. It took my friends and family a while to adapt, at first some of them were actually pretty angry that they couldn't contact me as soon as they wanted to, but they got over it and now they know that they can still reach me via email and skype/zoom calls. I did lose some friends because texting was more convenient for them, but that's ok. The friendships that remain are very deep and special to me. I don't think a phone-free lifestyle is for everyone - I am able to do it because I don't have children and am only responsible for myself and my husband, I live in a very safe town, and my job does not require it. But I will hold onto this lifestyle for as long as I can because it truly has made a huge impact on my mental well being.
@Small Decisions I wish I could hit the ❤️ 100 more times! Thank you so much for sharing all of that. It gives me a lot to think about and how I can continue to build off my 30-day experiment.
Wow, living without a cell phone. I'm impressed! Not many people have enough nerve to do that, but I wish every one would try that for at least one week. I have a small flip phone that does NOT have access to the internet. I love it. I don't even text.
I'm still using a Motorola StarTAC. Turns more heads than a smartphone and less distracting. But I can't get rid of my smartphone, I rely on it too much. GPS, emails etc. But I keep it in my bag and use the flip phone, only taking out my iPhone when I actually need it. I hated being glued to it.
Wow Tyler I really am impressed that you were able to do this! It sounds like you've learned a lot from it, definitely missed a few things (as would be expected) but the self awareness it inspired is amazing!
I've just ordered a KAI OS phone. It's essentially a dumbphone but can have SOME of the apps a smartphone has. It has physical keys but doesn't have the addictive glow of a smartphone. I see it as a compromise. I basically want a dumbphone that can still do WhatsApp. The KAI OS devices can do this, although it won't support video calling, but that's no issue as I always feel awkward doing that anyway! I'm looking forward to breaking that phone addiction!
Actually this year I broke my phone due to an accident and I didn't have the budget to get a new phone... so I decided to go without a phone for about a month and it was dragged to 2 months.... you literally feel so close to the world and look over a different perspective of the world... btw I had my SIM card into my hostel roomies phone so that I connect with everyone in night ... and facetime on my iPAD
Yes! Without a smart phone to such me in and take my attention, I found myself being much more present. Nice that you are still able to connect with people.
Right. It's so wonderful to be without a Smartphone. As you said, you feel closer to the world and people. You actually think. It's a wonderful experience. It seems many people don't even seem to know how to think anymore because they spend so much time staring at their phones.
I really want to give up my smart phone, but I LOVE audiobooks, podcasts, and it’s how I digitally borrow books from the library. Also GPS....(sighs) decisions decisions.....
I feel you! I just posted a video that tries to bridge the gap, turning my iphone into a dumb(er) phone. Maybe that is something that could work for you: th-cam.com/video/QCjRM1Vyr0w/w-d-xo.html
Look into a KaiOS phone they do have WiFi(2.4G), GPS with Google Maps, Google assistant(no voice match, and some features are missing),TH-cam(on the small screen with no touch you won't want to do it much) you can sign in with your google account, and sync contacts, there is a 3rd party podcast app in the KaiStore called PodLP, and I guess if you converted your audiobooks to MP3, and put them on a MicroSD card that could work, as KaiOS has a built in music app, or there is a 3rd party one called K-Music, or if you want digital books you could always pick up a used Amazon Kindle E-reader, just make sure it's on the supported list to still get updates from Amazon, and you can use a program called Calibre on Linux to convert e-pub, and other formats to Amazon Kindle.
Ha, yes. I actually don't own a car (actually I've only driven a car twice in the past decade!). But, if I didn't live in a city and owned a car, I would most definitely consider a Garmin.
Thank you to put yourself in such a difficult experience for goodness. I guess the new brand of Flip phone does not have speaker to speak hand free. The old versions had loud speaker. I don't understand why they removed such good quality since Flip phone works well for seniors.
I recently got a Cricket Debut Flip that runs KaiOS(your video was one of the top when I searched my phone) as my backup phone for cheap, and I think this phone would have solved some of your problems with a flip phone like listening to podcast(3rd party app in the KaiStore called PodLP), being able to load up your music from a MicroSD card, watch a small bit of YT on the small screen, use Google Maps to get from point A to B, Google Assistant(no voice match, and some features are missing), check your gmail with the built in email client(barely), being able to txt with your voice instead of having to type on the keypad(I can't confirm group txt as I've not had any yet on it), and the lonely 2MP camera with no flash is potato quality but better than nothing in a pinch if say you need a photo for an SMS at work to show something to your boss who's not in their office for example, so It's just enough phone IMHO. So no it's not going to replace my Android phone, but if something happens to my main phone it will get me by till I get another, or for times I just want to somewhat disconnect from tech, but people can still reach me if need be, then I can drop in my Cricket sim, and be on my way.
That phone sounds like it would have solved nearly all of my problems! But, like you, I don't think I am going to abandon my smart phone anytime soon. Nice to take a break though, from time to time, and know that you have a backup option.
That looks like my alcatel flip phone. I bought it on cricket wireless from target for like $30.00. I liked it better than my note 9, but needed something capable of mobile gaming since I recorded pokemon go gameplay for TH-cam sometimes.
It was a good phone but definitely no Pokémon Go on it (which I have a love-have relationship with). My apartment is perfectly situated between 3 pokestops so it is far to tempting to spend hours playing without having to do much.
I wonder which camera you use on the everyday basis as opposed to your phone's? I am using a flip phone at the moment and really like the simplicity of it, as well as how it imposes the mono-tasking lifestyle :)
Yes! No jumping between tasks and then suddenly find yourself forgetting what you were wanting to do on your phone. Right now I use a Canon EOS R. It is a big camera but I love it.
I've been trying this for while now and have found that the older Blackberry phones with Blackberry 10 to be quite good for this sort of thing - not completely dumb but moderately dumb. While they can still be used for social media it's quite hard work so you tend not to bother but at the same time they still do retain some of the more useful features of a modern smart phone such as email and of course texting is a breeze compared to a phone such as you were using. Based on this, if I wanted a completely dumb phone then I think I would try a BB Bold 9900 simply because I like to text and the proper key pad would make that so much easier. These are just my thoughts and experiences of course.
I think that would be perfect for me. I want a full keyboard, email, and a music/podcast player. Just the right around of smart. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Ive considered getting a blackberry for this reason but I heard that they will shut down services for their phones and that 3g will be obsolete in 2021. I have no idea if thats true or not
I was thinking of scheduling every minute of my day for a week, and being very conscious and observant about how I use my time. A full month would be on a whole other level.
Ive been using a flip phone since COVID shut everything down because that's all my work provided me due to do so many people working remotely. Cant do it when I work out though. I'm tracking calories. Need my OTF beat.
@@TylerLloyd Nike Plus mainly because I can track how many miles I am putting on my shoes, invite friends to challenges, and do monthly global challenges like run 100K in a month. I have tried other apps but I always go back to that. I also use the Orange Theory app in conjunction to track my splat points.
I have been thinking about getting a dumb phone for two years. The problem I’m having is I’m a mother and a wife whose family depends on me managing our calendar and being reachable at Al times via text. As a volunteer in my sons extra curricular activities, I need to have instantaneous access to email. So I turned my iPhone into a dumb phone.
Just so you know, it is not healthy to try to make yourself available at ALL times to everyone, even if you have a big family. I don't know your age, but my generation did not have cell phones. We had land lines and we were all just fine. You can be OK too, without being available at all times for anyone. Myself, I would refuse to be available for anybody, I don't care who they are. I value my mental health!
I think I did one better, not watching anything for 30 days: th-cam.com/video/3ZnhLHEkuZM/w-d-xo.html. But I wish I could get an air antenna to work in my apartment. Tried before and the single was just too weak.
Lol I have the same flip phone I use it for music every day I love it 🥰 I text on it my fingers fly across the key pad the Radio is good on it I have to use headphones or it won’t work
Don’t mind using a flip phone the smart phones are distracting in street photography, my wife has a smart phone, and I’ve got a Kai OS Nokia 2670 it’s nice with a large T9 layout.
That does make sense I mean like with the covert right now I miss being able to actually go to church or seeing my friends even though I like smart phones better than dumb phones I still like to see people in person social media nosiness sometimes I don’t like that
I totally agree. Also, I find people are nicer in person (well, not all people). It is hard to judge a person's tone when you interact with them online and I sometimes find people saying things in a way that they wouldn't if they were face to face. Interacting in a digital space sometime seems to dampen the good and amply the bad.
A few things I’ve done/doing. I have all notifications turned off on ALL social media. I am “down grading” my phone to a google pixel 4a. I don’t understand why $1,100 iPhone 11 Pro Max is acceptable in society, but it is. I literally browse the web, use some social media, text, and call. I don’t need this expensive phone to do these things. Society has made us want the latest and greatest things, especially phones. We buy things to impress people we don’t even like. 🤷♀️
Agreed! Since doing this 30 day challenge I made an effort to dumb down my iPhone as much as I could, to remove much of the temptation. It isn't a perfect solution, but has worked out well thus far.
On the list! But, I already wake up around 5AM, so it isn't a big stretch for me. I could, however, create a few videos about how/why I wake up so early and how I try to structure my mornings.
I've done two actually, but I am about to start bullet journaling again after many failed attempts to make that a practice. Here are my other videos: Gratitude Journaling: th-cam.com/video/Lcuq_vC-KVI/w-d-xo.html Journaling every day for a year: th-cam.com/video/ectLmetoLa4/w-d-xo.html
Exactly! My generation didn't have cell phones, so guess what we used? Maps! Just imagine not having GPS. It's amazing how dependent, and basically how dumb people have gotten as they've become so dependent on their phones. Sorry, but it's true! I do wish more people would try using a simpler phone. When you do, you actually start to learn to think for yourself instead of using your phone to think for you.
I had an old Nokia 1100 for two years while leaving abroad. It was a good little phone and I got really good at playing snake. But, I think that phone and others like it are only 2G which has been largely phased out. With more and more people wanting to temper their smart phone usage, I think phones like the old Nokias will make a comeback.
Where are the "Punctuation Marks", on this damn thing? Good Video, by the way. None of those bullshit "Editing Splices", so prevalent, in TH-cam Videos
I was going to get my mom a smart phone for her birthday she wants one of them down the phones me and myself I would be traumatized if I had to use a dumb phone I like the iPhone SE 2020 way better😂😂
Ha! Maybe you can get her the phone and them pair it down as much as possible. Give her a few shortcuts to call people, like yourself, and hide all the "smart" features in a folder that she won't look at.

No hacking on the at&t cingular flip
Nope! Call, slowly text, thats about it.
Flip phones are making a come back. I’m going to be switching to a Flip phone as my main phone
Awesome! Have you landed on a new phone yet?
@@TylerLloyd not yet. Soon though
Deleting all social media apps is not enough? Is cold turkey only solution?
I eventually went back to my smart phone, which I pared down greatly: th-cam.com/video/QCjRM1Vyr0w/w-d-xo.html
You could try budgeting for a month or spending a certain amount for a month or week to show everyone how they can save money in their lives
Excellent idea! I actually have two budget videos planned for next month, so it's good to see that you think they'd be of interest.
I wanna go back to a flip phone. But it's hard to find one unlocked so I can just use my SIM card. Now it's even harder cause the 3G shutdown
Yep, it is unfortunate
I have no idea if thats true or not
Some of the old BlackBerry phones have 4g. The BlackBerry classic Q20 and the BlackBerry Passport both have 4g.
If you haven't tried time blocking before, I recommend trying time blocking for 30 days
I was thinking of scheduling every minute of my day for a week, and being very conscious and observant about how I use my time. A full month would be on a whole other level.
Michelle: "Yeah, yeah, yeah." 🤣🤣🤣
Ha! I might need more Michelle commentary in future videos.
Ive been using a flip phone since COVID shut everything down because that's all my work provided me due to do so many people working remotely. Cant do it when I work out though. I'm tracking calories. Need my OTF beat.
Yeah, I really like what a smart phone adds to my workouts. What app are you using to track calories?
@@TylerLloyd Nike Plus mainly because I can track how many miles I am putting on my shoes, invite friends to challenges, and do monthly global challenges like run 100K in a month. I have tried other apps but I always go back to that. I also use the Orange Theory app in conjunction to track my splat points.
Try to use a degoogled android phone
I may for my next one. Right now I’m going to ride it out with my iPhone until it kicks it. Do you use a degoogled Android?
@@TylerLloyd yes i do have a degoogled samsung a5 17. And i have a samsung s10 with google but i need it for business.
I value my mental health!
only watch tv via a over the air antenna for 30 days
I think I did one better, not watching anything for 30 days: th-cam.com/video/3ZnhLHEkuZM/w-d-xo.html. But I wish I could get an air antenna to work in my apartment. Tried before and the single was just too weak.
This is a 100k sub quality here.
Thank you! I really appreciate that. Maybe I’ll get there one day. 😊
Matt D'avella already did this challenge.
Actually, I did it first! But, I did a bunch of other 30 Day Challenges after him--his channel was a big inspiration for me starting mine.
Lol I have the same flip phone I use it for music every day I love it 🥰 I text on it my fingers fly across the key pad the Radio is good on it I have to use headphones or it won’t work
I loved the radio but never loaded music to it. And I was most definitely as slow as a snail when texting 🐌
Don’t mind using a flip phone the smart phones are distracting in street photography, my wife has a smart phone, and I’ve got a Kai OS Nokia 2670 it’s nice with a large T9 layout.
It was a good experiment and probably one that I need to revisit, or at least do a reset for my current phone usage.
I got the same phone
It is a great little phone!
Wake up at 04:30 for 30 days
On the list! But, I already wake up around 5AM, so it isn't a big stretch for me. I could, however, create a few videos about how/why I wake up so early and how I try to structure my mornings.
omg do a journaling challenge
I've done two actually, but I am about to start bullet journaling again after many failed attempts to make that a practice. Here are my other videos:
Gratitude Journaling: th-cam.com/video/Lcuq_vC-KVI/w-d-xo.html
Journaling every day for a year: th-cam.com/video/ectLmetoLa4/w-d-xo.html
Lol when your car doesn't come with it's own GPS navigation you are forced to figure out how to get to your destination. It's a good skill to develop.
It's a skill I once had but I clearly have become overly reliant on GPS!
Mp3 players will be missed...
Yeah. That and audiobooks were deal breakers for me.
But, I think, to go real minimalistic, one does not need just flip phone. Nokia 1100 is enough.
Gonna downgrade but to the schok classic, will remove some of the cons.
whoa first view and comment, I'm amazed
👏 💯
Where are the "Punctuation Marks", on this damn thing? Good Video, by the way. None of those bullshit "Editing Splices", so prevalent, in TH-cam Videos
Thanks! The worst is when you press one time to many and have to cycle back through all the punctuations!
I am going to buy one so I won't be tracked. Google has too much power.
I know. I wish you could pick and choose what Google tools you use, clearly opting out on much the tracking. Sadly, it's largely all or nothing.
all phones track you, this is no exception
I cant lie flip phones are cool idk y but they are
Agreed! There is something oddly satisfying about flipping the phone open and even more so when closing it after a call, very declarative.
@@TylerLloyd well I'm the one that's smartphone smartphone savy I'm more used to smartphones I have the iPhone my mom's used to flip phones what can I say me I'd rather use Smart devices thanks for your comment I don't get it why anybody would want to use a flip phone nowadays but each of their own
But you may be even more 'traumatized' if that cell phone tower goes down and you can't use your iPhone!
I wanna go back to a flip phone. But it's hard to find one unlocked so I can just use my SIM card. Now it's even harder cause the 3G shutdown
I know! There are a few out there but many are pretty expensive for what little they do.
@@TylerLloyd exactly. Also with my current carrier I apparently need the app to activate the phone and they don't sell any flip phones. The only flip ones they got is the z flip
