    Hey, Priit. Love the Hawking, but a brown belt keeps on catching me with a paper cutter choke when gi rolling. I can't find any video where you address this yet. Thanks for your vision!

      I would go back to the positions before he gets to the paper cutter and see what he is doing for his success. We have a 4 stripe brown belt in hour academy who is a monster with the knee slice and flattening people out afterwards. It took me a while to figure out what he was doing to always put me flat on my back. I didn't see my mistake until recently when practicing the running man from their knee slice. From the running man I didn't hide the bottom arm well enough so he was able to grab the sleeve and put me on the back every time. I saw the mistake and fixed it so now I know what he is looking for and I make sure to keep that arm protected. You are making a minor mistake that can be fixed you just have to notice when you are making it for him to get you with that submission.

      The issue is that if I use the Hawking when he is attempting side control, I'm exposing the space under the back for him to catch the collar for the paper cutter. Once my collar is caught he goes north south, which prevents me from transitioning to a different defensive posture, adjust the collar hand from there, negating my hand fighting because it is too high up, then goes back to side control to finish the choke. I haven't recorded myself yet rolling with him to make sure, but I think I'm not messing up the position, I think he just found a way around it.

      @@DR-7h0m4s What is he doing with the non collar hand while he is in transition to north/south? Are your arms leaving the safe zone at any point? I think you have to time when to leave hawking to another position like running man when he starts to move north/south. He isn't beating you from north/south, he is beating you from side control. The north/south back to side control is the main issue. Feel his movement and decide which type of escape you need to do to create space from there.

    Priit once mentioned a Brazilian guy who plays bottom side control similar to hawking. Does anyone know the name?

      Saulo Ribero perhaps... he has a "running defensive posture" in his book :Jiu-jitsu University.

      Eduardo Telles maybe? He’s the original turtle guy

    I guess this is for a jiujitsu style that isn't self-defence or combative oriented? Or even MMA? Very interesting... and I guess I'd need to feel it, but sure seems this is only useful in a playful environment.

      @Hyo Choi - makes sense. I’ve been at this game for over 20 years and it feels like I’ve forgotten more moves than what I remember… so this focus on certain concepts or principles makes perfect sense. Oss

    What I realized after watching all these hawking videos is... he talks too much. Nobody wants or needs to hear you talk this much theory. The concept is much more simple than he makes it. With that said, I love this technique and his coaching in general.

      I love you daring to speak for everyone. Those talks in between is actually what matters. However, could not care less if people think otherwise. Feel free to think whatever, no need to argue. The world will make up its mind despite what you or me think. Care to learn how to scroll through the parts you do not personally need?

      This is taken from a seminar, where i guess the principal is to explain the whole idea of the technique to people who are potentially brand new to it.
      what you are seeing is a clip/clips from many different seminars condensed into what looks like a technique video.
      you are watching a seminar. just enjoy it and learn :)

      I agree.. way too much talking

    • @ModusPwnens72
      @ModusPwnens72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true to some degree but the theory is useful and the overtalking is much less painful in a one-time seminar than when watching back to back videos.

      yeah, I get what you are saying. I've had teachers like Priit who RANT for a long time, but what they have to teach is usually very good. Very well thought out. Pros and cons with everything.
