I think this has to be the most underrated Cohen song. What a masterpiece. And what a lyricist he was.

Leonard on top of amazing artist, was a visionary. I still miss his wisdom, and perspective on what's going on in the world.
His 1992 "The Future" was prophetic.

I grow fonder of him daily. I can't get enough of his wisdom, wit, insight. He's just phenomenal. I can say this. I will continue to listen to his entire catalog until end of days. I will read his lyrics and poems and books and biographies and autobiography, videos, interviews, for all their bits of Cohen-isms. His truth as only he can present it, hide it, spread it, ideal it, break it apart, share it, live it, and breathe it in like soul air. LOVE this man.

I am listening to him for more than 20 years now, but you need to go to the next level. Read this poems (with the Bible in the other hand, you will need it), and read and try to understand his songs. The experience is mind blowing, from listening the songs and catching a meaning here and there, to actively trying to understand what those phrases mean.
All that, if you are not doing this already, of course :D

This gives me reason to pause... that Cohen sang this in London three years ago proves he was in touch with the Divine. And, forgiven... he's watching from the edge of heaven. Hallelujah!
Actually, our beloved Leonard died in November 2016 or thereabouts. So he didn't sing it in London 3 years ago. But the recording, taped live back when it happened, was only released 3 years ago. Which makes his wisdom and poetry all the more remarkable.

@@alwaysfourfun1671 for what it’s worth he did absolutely rate Dylan and was absolutely blown away by hearing him for the first time whilst living in Hydra, playing records over and over again, then rushing out to buy more, inviting all his friends over and so on. I don’t think Dylan ever claimed to be a poet; he says if he is in that company he ‘snuck in the back door’. He reflects and expands the great American song book, the English folk songs, etc. The Nobel prize said something along those lines. I love Leonard’s music. This song Democracy, for me predicts the culture war struggle- and seems like it’s about the painful process of America moving from its painful past to somehow, via some process of pain, introspection and uncomfortable dialogue, achieving an equitable and representative society.. hopefully.. somehow
Both are deeply deserving. Cohen deserved one as well.
