WORKSHOP WEDNESDAY: Historic Restoration of a Australian WWI trophy. Lower Shield, Seats and Wheels!

  • On the 4th of July 1918, an Australian-led offensive commenced around the village of le Hamel.
Such was its success that it led to being used as a model for future combined arms offensives.
During this battle, the 21st Battalion, 2nd Division captured a German 7.7cm Feldkanone 96. It was sent home as a war trophy and wasted away in a park in Ararat, Victoria.
After being rescued from being sent away for scrap metal, this rusty old piece has been acquired by the Australian Armour and Artillery Museum, where Al (the master craftsman of sheet metal) has begun restoring it.

I am not denigrating Al and his work at all. He’s great. But what he’s doing is fairly routine restoration work. I’ve done lots of restoration work over the last 30 plus years and kudos to these guys.

What an amazing skill those Wheelwrights have. They're so precise and just look so organic.
I hope someone remembers to turn them once in a while and continues to oil them. May we
    never ever lose these skills.

I've been watching the videos from the Australian Armour and Artillery museum for awhile now and always enjoy them. The skill and craftsmanship is enjoyable to watch as is the dedication of the crew. They also allow me to learn things about the vehicles that I otherwise would not be able to, and see aspects of them that I would never see in a museum. I was especially excited to see this series because my Grandfather was on a FK 96 n.A. gun crew in WWI. (Erste Garde Feld Artillerie.)

the crew of these old field guns didn't have the loader sitting by the breech, as that position was inconvenient to feed the gun
the typical crew of a WWI-era medium field gun was
    -gun captain
    -gun aimer
    -breech operator
    -loader
    -fuse setter
    -2 assistant loaders
the gun captain stood next or behind the gun aimer, who was seated on the left side of the gun, the captain would spot target and transmit firing orders to the crew, the aimer manipulated the controls to set the gun on target
then the breech operator was seated on the right of the gun, facing the breech, his job was to open and close the breech as well as fire the gun by pulling the firing lanyard
the loader was crouched behind the gun, he received ready cartridges from one of the assistant loaders and fed them into the breech
the assistant loaders and the fuse setter were next to the caisson containing the ammunition, they took shells, screwed fuses on, set them and passed them to the loader
