Dolly, you are simple the best. Everybody loves your song - I will always love you, and that's alright; but no one can every sing it like you do. I will always love you, Dolly.
Whitney Houston loved Dolly Parton. I don't think people know how much she adored her. I'm sure that it was a pleasure for Whitney to sing a Dolly Parton song and give it a crossover style.
I like Dolly, I even bought for our game room in the basement a Dolly Parton Pinball Machine in 1981, brand new, our guests loved it, my wife chose the incredible hulk pinball, we had a Rockola 451 juke box and space invader arcade, I loved those days.
Dolly absolutely did the right thing, but still such a shame we didn't get to hear Elvis interpret it. His performance on Bob Dylans 'Tomorrow is a long time' is so beautiful.
Most of the people don’t even know she’s the author of the original song... and she don't give a fuck. Dolly’s genius is that she made millions of dollars from selling the rights to the song, but that song really stays hers forever. Because what comes from you. From your soul. From your heart. From your mind. It can't be someone else's. It will always be just a "HUGE multi-platinum" copy.
Dolly never sold the rights to “I Will Always Love You”.. That’s why Elvis never got to record his version because Dolly wouldn’t not give Elvis credit as co-writer on her song that she wrote… Dolly gave the producers of the soundtrack permission to re-record I Will Always Love You..
The first time I heard this song was around 1990 and I was giving a homeless girl a ride. On the drive she sang this song quietly and perfectly along with Dolly on the radio, and I have never forgotten it.
I found out in 2023 this was a Dolly Song. Honestly, thought it was Whitney's original piece. Both did it beatifully. Thanks Dolly for this, and Whitney for delivering
Dollys is my favorite partially because she wrote it and the story behind it but also just because when you hear it you hear the emotion behind it and it makes you feel something Whitney’s is extremely impressive but it feels like she’s just belting and I don’t feel the same emotions as when Dolly sings it
Idk why people argue about which song versions are better. It’s just a matter of taste. I don’t like Whitney’s style of music so I probably wouldn’t like anything she sings. Not that she is not good, just not my genre. I do like Dolly but I have never liked this song regardless of who sings it.
0:03 She sing the 'I would only' part differently here, and it sounds so much better, but I can't find the version of this song anywhere on be except here.
I do like how she brought it back for when she played Miss Mona in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. A lot of people forget the song was in that movie when Miss Mona (Dolly) sang it to Sherriff Ed Earl (Burt Reynolds). There is a live version of her singing this to Porter Wagoner at The Grand Ole Opry five months before his death.
Dolly Parton is currently ( March 2022 ) on the Rock n Roll Hall of fame pre-ballot. To make it to the final ballot she has to be among the top five vote-getters. Theres about a dozen on the pre-ballot and Parton is fourth. That's way too close to falling off the ballot. I'm going to the rock hall website to vote for her now. All you need is a valid email address and you can vote also. To me it's a no-brainer to elect her but apparently not enough people feel the same way. Shes had over 100 songs on the country charts and 25 of those on the pop charts. This particular song was number one 3 times in three different decades. In 74 and 82 for Dolly and 92 for Whitney Houston. By the way I was born and raised in the city and know less country music than most other forms of popular music. But I like to think I have good taste in music and I know when I hear someone special and Dolly is special.
And this is why I love Dolly. I prefer her version, but I also understand the appeal of Whitney's take on it. (I'll always love Whitney's Super Bowl national anthem). Dolly is honest, direct and kind. A role model for young and old, men and women.

For me personally, with Ms. Houston's version, my attention is drawn to the vocal gymnastics. WIth Ms. Parton's version, my attention is drawn to the underlying feelings of the song, and the feelings and message of the song fit EXACTLY to a particular episode of my life.
