What a surprising treat to have the extremely handsome Fotis feature in this video! I remember him from your '13 things you should know before travelling to Italy' video and hadn't realised he is a somewhat regular contributor. Oh this is fun! In conclusione, io li adorro. (Some americano) 😘

I'm Italian,I have often thought about this question and I think I can give a clear answer.
Italians are generous, passionate with a very strong cultural heritage, they are strong in spirit, and if they also have talent and determination (and sometimes it happens) no one can stop them.
Replying to the Man - the right word is not cowardice, but underestimation, the Italian is absolutely not a coward, he usually has little self-confidence and is capable of doing anything if he is truly determined to do it...
but they underestimate themselves a lot IMO.
For example, look at the Americans who compliment themselves every day, pose as Superman and sometimes feel like a superior people, in fact some are almost convinced of this.
The Italian is the exact opposite, he thinks he is among the worst, even if he never says it and gets offended if you tell him, but he always feels like he is one step behind the others.
This defect arises purely for political reasons, Italy has been economically damaged for at least 40 years despite remaining a great country, so I think it is a legacy of something that happened in the country and that we have internalized over time (Often make our own fortune when we go abroad, and this confirms my assessment).
In my opinion, another flaw of Italians is always the result of these last 40 years (because in the 60s we were very different), that we don't believe we can achieve great things, so we don't throw ourselves into big projects, we give up too easily. ..
an American is the opposite of this, he makes big plans very easily even if he has no talent, an Italian without talent feels he has already lost and will never try...

As an oriunda I can honestly say that the last time I was in Italy I felt much more at ease. Living in Australia for most of my life and then going back to Italy for a visit, was a culture shock, as I expected. I even got into an argument with some bogan rail station staff who were rude and unhelpful.
Finally, they realised that without signs or professional staff who are employed to be of help to passengers, they shouldn’t expect rewards. This was in the Roman district. So different from the North.
Apart from that experience and other negatives, I found Italians generally kind and open. The great thing about Italy is, that you’re allowed to be human. 😅

Most Italians I knew are a bit stuck... As a French comedian recently said, humor is not universal but always confined by a national culture and has internal boundaries. In France the internal humor boundary is the Jews (can't laugh about them), in Romania is the Romanians ... -) Of course she was punching at the latest immigration wave in France: Romanians. In a more serious note I do find that Italians can't laugh properly at the bourgeois meaning of being an Italian. Most Italian couples I knew, although very kind and sociable, were insufferably bourgeoise. They all used this phrase quite often "Oh, that restaurant is too expensive for us ..." but their Venetian drawers were neatly stuffed with expensive cashmere jumpers. They read the right books, saw the right films to show intellectual class, drank the right amount of prosecco at exactly the right time of the day, etc. Brits and French from the north are good at laughing at themselves (at least at this form of class signaling), Italians not so much. I think Pirandello and Moravia satirized Italians for this.

The woman who thinks it's so great that French fight for their rights might think otherwise if she gets blocked on a public road by a mob of strikers or a pile of steaming manure as happens in France way too often. A new strike every other week. I'd say this is the major French flaw. Going on strike and disrupting other people's lives because you are unhappy about something. Italians are so much more easygoing by comparison and don't mess with you! They help you in any way they can.
