This was an amazing concert. I was there, Joey Calderazzo was just 22 at the time. That was the year I first heard the EWI and it changed my musical life. Then in 1989 I met Mike for the first time, and then we became friends in 1995 when I created his first web site and managed it until 2000. We were friends until the very end, last email I got from him was about two weeks before he died. I miss that man.
One night at the age of 14 I switched the TV and I saw this band. The concert was live in Japan. I didn't know to whom I listened and who he was. I simply was blown away. For the first time I have heard the real stuff. Since this day I was into fusion jazz. Second Milestone was 4 years later, when Joe Zawinul with the Syndicate was in my hometown. Boy, I talked to Joe and to Gary Poulsen after the concert. Again, I didn't know who Joe Zawinul was. It was an amazing evening, they played for 100 people and the audience was hot. They enjoyed it much. From this day on, I went to our jazz festival. Luckily we have a great jazzfestival in town. More was to come, finally ended up in talks with great musicians like Dennis Chambers or Victor Bailey after their concerts.
What a musicians! Love these killers! Never forget Michael Brecker and Jeff Andrews! Also, Mike Stern is on fire like Joey Calderazzo and Adam Nussbaum! One of my favorite band ever!
..wow, incredibly telepathic playing in this performance!...everybody in the Zone!!...folks talk about three dimensional chess, damn this is at least 6 or 7...Newport Jazz Festival no less, believe it!..god bless Michael Brecker RIP...
It's actually the very first version of the Akai EWI. (Electronic Wind Instrument) Probably a prototype. With this controller, Mike was able to play on any MIDI instrument like Synthesizers or others. The main MIDI sound generator he used at that time was the Oberheim X-Pander.
@@@dannyrusso8279 thanks for the information. Maybe I've heard this back in the days but I don't remember. Another one of the same kind was the Lyricon played by Tom Scott among others. th-cam.com/video/w0xwku3Bitc/w-d-xo.html

Man.. I bet he was a great person aswell
I can’t believe Mike and Mike were playing that head in unison. That is masterful.
Such a great sound! You can see Mike give Mike a wink after the solos when the head came back in. Wonder what happened there?

What an amazing solo by Mike Stern. Talk about being in the zone - with the best of the best behind him. Mind blown
OMG - what fun it must be having the ability to make music on that level!
It's always great to see Louis CK on the drums, Steve Jobs on the EWI, and Hugo Weaving on guitar
LOLLLL
And Hunter S Thompson on Keys
BRO... lmaoooo
Probably the best comment on the internet, ever!
It's Harry Potter on guitar. But yes.
"See kids? This is what 'being on another whole level' means."... Holy shit. 😮 Can't believe Brecker's mastery here!
Everybody played so good! Outstanding! And then performing within the group as well, truly great
The line-up for this show was:
Mike Brecker: Tenor/EWI
Mike Stern: Guitar
Jeff Andrews: Bass
Adam Nussbaum: Drums
Joey Calderazzo: Piano/Keyboards

Brecker & Andrews
Gone but NEVER forgotten !
I adore Michael; love it when he actively feels the feeling.
RIP!
Still one of the best composed jazz tunes out there!
Absolutely, yes! It deserves a way better place in the Jazz Standard's Olympus
Maybe in the rock league. Where is jazz??????
@@danielsuarez1431 Ever heard of the genre jazz fusion?
The "fast forward to the solos" genre.
Among other things, I love how Michael always give everything, even playing the scratches at the start :) !
Masterpiece ❤
Brecker is a fucking genius. His best solo on EWI definitely !

I love this.
BTW I think Mike Stern borrowed one of Pat Metheny's shirts for this concert.
Stuart Dryer LOL true
Hunh😎😂🤣😝😜🤯🤯🤯. New musical limits were set that day! So cool and Zawinulistic.
I just want to be having as much fun and looking as good as Joey Calderazzo
this cooks with hot heat. what a crew! jam central
The days of wine and roses...the 55bar trio plus Mike & Joey, that was before they came up with decibel restrictions...: count it of, BOOM...
Insane solos!
Those breath synthesizers could be my least favorite instrument but Mr. Brecker is blowing the s out of it.
I was unaware Mike Stern owned any shirts that weren't black
What a great performance!
Häftigt!
I saw. MB in SF CA.in 90 s. w McCoy Tuner.Pharoah OMG!!!!! it was like Trane was there also......he blew..OMG I'm
Coming back for another fix
What an Electronic Wind Synthesizer!
The manipulation thereof by Mike is incroyable, n'est pas?

@@TheoRota I believe it was called a Steinerphone back then. Name after the inventer Nyle Steiner. Later Akai bought the design and called it EWI.

Coolness defined.
The best band with chick corea electric band.
Audio guy really should have turned up the guitar at this concert.
Mike Stern bringing it!🎶
this rocks!
Killers!
Get this drummer some water. The EWI looks exhausting to play, almost like he's screaming into it.
It looks like that boys have had a long night before this show :D
Good lord! No one ever came close on the EWI since
I wish my EWI mpc were bent...
Damn!!!
Holy Hell
Harika👍
Michael is God ! :)
Louis C.K. on drums :)))
I think It is Adam Nussbaum
Adam Nussbaum is a genius. Louis CK is a pervert. Don't compare this awesome drummer to a pervert lol.
Ed rooney from ferris bueller
Shitty overated comedian compared to a underated amazing drummer.. but they still look like brothers and that is funny as hell!!
Came here to comment that hahaha
This is Mike Sterns tune isnt it?
So fucken weird lol, Michael brecker does whatever he wants and it ends up sounding sick
un solo di EWI pazzesco! dovrebbe essere uno Steinerphone.
Reminds me of the Upside world in Stranger Things
Whats the name of the drummer??
Adam Nussbaum
Louis ck
@@ddinggaddingga6132 That was fun 12 years ago.
nussbaum
Look didnt he just sample the guitar?
