    In a self defense situation I'd say 10mm due to ammo capacity. But if I had 6 rounds of 10mm or 6 rounds of 44mag, hands down the 44.

      It depends on the barrel length. Plenty of 9mm cartridges shoot around the same velocity and muzzle energy as a .357 if the .357 bullet is being shot out of a 3 inch barrel or less. Wheel gunners tend to be ignorant of ballistics data. You need a longer barrel to get any kind of significant power advantage over a 9mm, and that of course comes at the price of a lot more recoil.

    Good job calling it the way it is. I like how you express the 10mm as a compromise. It is a good one, in the realm of semi-auto's, but it just doesn't match the .44 in terms of potential per round. I like .357 Sig too. As someone else said, 10mm is fine for two-footed critters, but for dangerous game, .44 Mag or better would be on me. 10mm would have the upper hand in controllability and round count, which could be the difference, but how many rounds are you getting off on a charging animal?

    We'll the real issue is, most people cant shoot for shit, so they gravitate towards more chances. That's why semi autos are being brought up in arguments like this. They like to think a bunch of rounds will scare away their aggressor, or maybe they'll have a better chance of hitting. But when your enemy weighs half a ton and has cubs, she doesn't give a shit how many rounds you might have and stopping power becomes an issue.

    I'm a 10mm fan, own a Glock 20, and an extended 6" KKM Precision barrel. But that being said, the 44 magnum is far ahead of the 10mm. There's no comparison period. One thing I've watched over the years, your major manufacturers have watered down the magnum cartridges velocity, even the 357sig too. The boutique ammo makers have bumped the notch back up to what Elmer Keith developed. Some claim the old loads were tested on old data that when re-tested on modern equipment proved over Saami spec, well those old guns with old technology handled those loads for years, and still do, I know several old reloaders still using data from the 60's and 70's, have all their fingers and limbs etc... As for the 10mm vs 357 Magnum, per a previous post regarding underwood ammo, the numbers are almost Identical between the 10 and 357 in all weight ranges. The only advantage comes from the heavier 10mm loadings in 200gr+ loadings. But mainly because it's rare to find these loads loaded commercially in 357 magnum. Yet a reloader can easily acquire and load their own.

      i cant say for back when this comment is written but i can say if true then this info is outdated because todays 10mm pistols have been just as effective as 44mag and are becoming more and more popular due to their pros over revolvers.
      10mm often in measurements of velocity and energy will have you scratching your head once you put it to the test of piercing and transerring energy through different mediums.
      in many test higher velocity 10mm pistols like the g40 with extended barrel paired with the right ammo preforms similar and sometimes better than many 44mag competitors and while coming with over double the rounds to shoot and having less recoil so follow up shots are even more likely to hit what they need to
      i wont go as far to say 10mm is better than 44 because i still have more test i wanna do myself but in todays age id say the 10mm at the least is on par with the 44mag with its list of pros

I think it takes a certain type of person to carry a gun that big and be able to shoot it accurately and with quick follow up shots. I'm sure you can handle it no problem but most people that think bigger is better would probably be in big trouble when they realize they can't hit shit with it and the recoil throws them way off target. The weight of the gun is what would turn me off of this caliber of gun. If I'm hiking miles and miles, I'm not carrying a giant revolver. They sure are fun to shoot though!!!

      Why would anyone use a .44 magnum cartridge out of a handgun when 10mm offers power with comparatively less recoil?
      .44 magnum out of a typical revolver isn't even that powerful to begin with compared to 10mm. Yank in this video just cherry picks this "1500lbs" of energy, which is the highest number he could find based on shooting the hottest .44 cartridge out of a rifle.
      But why would anyone shoot a .44 magnum out of a rifle for hunting, when it's weaker/ has way less velocity than other rifle rounds? It's just stupid.

      Commenting here in 2020: this video did not age well. 10mm is getting REALLY popular, and people generally agree that shot placement and capacity are pretty darn important for fending off large animals like bears. 10mm traveling at 1700 fps is sufficient to crack a bear's skull, so the capacity and comfort of a semi auto beats the high ft lbs of a 44 mag, since you're not going to bleed out an animal that big and incapacitate it with anything but a head shot.

    I have a Glock 20 (10mm) and the Ruger Redhawk (44 mag). Totally different weapons. I almost exclusively leave the 44mag in the truck and carry the 10mm everywhere in the woods and streams of Alaska. Any 44 mag giving you want you want out of that cartridge necessarily needs to have at least a 5” barrel and be beefy to shoot comfortably. No handgun is worse to shoot than a short barrel, light frame 44. You can find tons of those for sale in Alaska.

I switched my stock barrel to a KKM and recoil spring to a 21 pound spring and it shoots flawlessly. I guess I would rather have the better accuracy and much higher capacity. I also want a gun I can shoot with one hand just incase I ever get hurt while in the woods and only have use of one hand. I can rack my glock on my belt and fire it one handed. PRACTICE THIS DRILL: If you think you are going to get a "brain shot" and T-zone win a charging Grizzly, please, please practice this all important drill - A bears brain is the size of a softball. Have somebody throw a softball at you, at 40 mph from 20 yards away, skipping along the ground the way a bears head moves when it's bounding. Now rapidly draw and fire.
    +1 if you hit the softball.
    -1 if you miss the softball.
    -10 if you shoot the guy who threw the softball
    ** The point of this illustration is to address the myriad of 10mm users who claim that in order to make up for the lack of power with the 10mm they will elect to execute a brain shot. @@ronaldjarrett8262 I'm not sure If you mean .45 Colt like the old cowboy revolver cartridge or .45 acp in a colt 1911. But for bears neither is a good idea imo. The only way to stop a charging bear before he gets to you is a brain shot or spine shot that will sever the spine. Neither are powerful enough to go through a grizzlies angled skull reliably. I've heard .45 acp can sometimes sheer off at the sheer thickness and angle of the skull and considering .45 Colt is only SLIGHTY more powerful neither is a good idea. 10mm is much better than both of those options and I still don't think it's enough. I carry a .44 mag with +p+ .340 grain hard cast bullets that will shred a bears spine or blow it's skull to smithereens. When it comes to bears go for .44 mag and up if you are carrying a pistol. But personally shotguns are the best I just hike a lot so my .44 mag revolver isn't so cumbersome to carry. Watch any video of a bear eating something alive like an elk calf or something they don't kill their prey immediately they just pin you down and eat you alive it's a very slow and agonizing way to go, unless you want that to be you make sure to bring the proper tool for the job or else you'll be turned into bear scat.

  • @timothyparks2531
    @timothyparks2531 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I remember the early 90's when the 10mm hit its first wave of popularity. I lived in Michigan, and the new 10mm was going to be the best auto for the hunting woods. By the end of the 90's there was a few used 10mm in every gunshop. Traded in for revolvers, most 44 mag. Why? It just wasn't a whitetail hunting firearm. 1. Hunting pistols need to have hunting accuracy. A semi-auto 10mm is a close range pistol. Short barrel equals short sight radius, no scope . Topped with high recoil for weight. The 10mm is just isn't accurate enough. 2. The 10mm didn't effectively kill deer. Some blame ammo, accuracy is another reason. So if the 10mm can't reliably kill whitetails, why does anyone think it will reliably kill a bear? Gun writers and marketing hype it up, then reality kills the 10mm again. Sad the cycle has happened 4-5 times in 30 years. Maybe someday people will learn. But if we keep listening to the keyboard experts with "my friend's brother's uncle's sister's husband's cousin....killed a 2000 lbs bear with 4 shots of 10mm", then the cycle will repeat. Watch a bear charge video, you'l be lucky to get 2-3 shots off. I would want them to be the hardest hitting thing I can handle. Believing that having more than 6 shots will help in a bear charge scenario is just nonsense.

    Correct. While I love the 10mm, it does not compare to .44 mag. To think so is a bit ridiculous. In odd terms, a 10mm is simply a .40 magnum. (edit) Being that the .40 is a reduced 10mm. (same size, longer case, etc) It would stand to reason if manufacturers actually called the 10mm a "40 Magnum" sales would likely increase. What do you think?

  • @Elthenar
    @Elthenar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    The video is dead accurate. What makes the 10mm great is that is has a boatload of power, for a high capacity pistol. It was made for FBI agents to carry and as a personal defense weapon, it is nigh unparalleled. It's very accurate, with lots of bullets and loads of power. It's use as a hunting weapon is an afterthought.
    That said, it obviously is not on par with a big .44 mag revolver when it comes to raw power. As the man in the video says, it is foolish to compare them.
    I'll say this, were I ever to find myself under attack by hostile men intent on doing me serious harm, give me that 10mm Glock 20. If I ever find my self getting charge by a angry brown bear, give me the .44 mag. Fortunately, my life isn't THAT exciting.

    • @k.g.alatore355
      @k.g.alatore355 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Elthenar I don't think it was made for FBI agents initially. Its inception and the infamous shooting where two FBI agents perished that sparked the "hurr 9mm is weak" debate were just very close to one another time-wise, and the FBI opted to use the 10mm even though it was a fairly new cartridge with not a lot of guns made for it. (and that completely bombed, because they went right back to 9mm not long after, and then to .40, and now they're going back to 9mm /again/)
      That being said, 10mm is a really fun round to shoot and I wouldn't mind having one as a defensive handgun.

    • @Elthenar
      @Elthenar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You guys are right. It was made for the Bren Ten in 83 and adopted by the FBI after the Miami shootout.
      Otherwise I stand by everything I said about the cartridge itself. It's a great compromise between power, capacity and size while also being very accurate.

    • @k.g.alatore355
      @k.g.alatore355 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      And since then, the Bren Ten's undergone countless "revival" phases, all of which have fallen on their respective asses. It really sucks, because those were cool guns :/ (even though there are CZ 75-style guns made by other manufacturers chambered in 10mm that are much more affordable, but still)

    • @Elthenar
      @Elthenar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Bren Ten would be nice to have as a collector piece maybe, but as a functional 10mm you might as well get a Glock 20. I don't own one but I have fired one, even with the full power loads it is fairly easy to handle and laser accurate.

    You can find videos on here of 155gr 10mm getting over 1300 joules (960+ foot pounds) of energy out of a 6" barrel. That is more than any .357 magnum I know of.
    Is .44 magnum potentially more powerful? Yes. Is there some overlap? Yes. Do I believe 10mm is the better round? Yes.
    Out or a 20" barrel lever action rifle I will prefer the .44 mag, but for a handgun, 10mm is the way to go. I saw it go through 5mm of steel, what will you be shooting?

    One of my favorite vids..I like like the fat lady example, and it's true. I have heard stories of men dropping grizzlies with one shot from a .44 mag revolver and a story of a man with a Taurus 9mm just barely(by luck/grace of God) stopping a grizzly with the 15th and final round. Kind of like if I said one shot with a 30-30 is identical to 15 rounds of .22 long rifle, I mean they do equal the same energy right? lol, the difference is that not one of those .22 rounds would get through that dense rib cage yet one shot from a 30-30 will blow right through, fragment the shit out of those bones like a grenade going off and drop that beast.

    • @jamesfranco7090
      @jamesfranco7090 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol I wouldn't even go after a grizzly with a 30/06 so what makes you think a 30/30 would drop one! If you're going with a lever gun then might as well get a 45/70

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's not ideal but a 30-30 is still a fine weapon and could kill a grizzle pretty effectively. I also would pick a 45-70 or .444 if I had the choice.

    • @Kanglar
      @Kanglar 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Sam Man
      His fat lady example was a straw man. The bride WILL have supported 1200 pounds in total, just not all at once. The grizzly you are shooting WILL have absorbed the kinetic energy from each shot, just not all the shots at once.
      And for your 22 example, yes it would be the same amount of muzzle energy. But this brings me to the main point, shot placement is wayyyy more important than muzzle energy or "stopping power". There was a guy who killed a griz with a 22 with just a few shots, one hit it in the eye and went into its brain. You could shoot all 6 44mag and miss all its vitals and it could maul your ass before it bleeds out. Not saying that is likely, or that 44mag is inadequate at all for bear, just pointing this out. More rounds you have, more chances to make the shot placement you need. You could kill a griz with 1 shot of 44mag possible, also possibly with 1 shot of 10mm. There are many more factors to consider than just round "power", such as shot placement and penetration, when deciding how effective a cartridge is for a particular purpose.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You need all that energy in one place to break through a bear's body and ribs. A .22 just won't do it, if you want several shots of .22 hoping for eye shots than have at it, but i'd rather have one large caliber round and wait for the last moment of attack so to be sure I make a fatal blow. What would you rather have when comparing these two similar added energy? One rifled 12 gauge slug in a break barrel shotgun, or a fully loaded 10/22? Anyone would be a fool to choose the .22 in bear country.

    • @DustyNonya
      @DustyNonya 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sam Man I've heard stories of men who had trouble dropping a Grizzly with a semi-automatic .30-06...on one account an individual put 12 of the 17 (10+1, 4+1) rounds into the bear which was grounded roughly 10 feet away from the other individual it was trying to attack. You'd be surprised how well .22LR's can penetrate now (check out the videos involving a full skull make-up including approximated skull, tissue, and even brain from a 4" pistol barrel. A 40g Velocitor will go clean through the back of your dome with energy to spare). It's not smart to use a .22LR on a bear unless it's the only thing you have...but you'd be surprised how many bears (including polar bears) have been killed with a barrage of .22 fire.
      So while I do agree that the .44 and 10mm aren't comparable in terms of "true power"...I also believe that entirely too many people (especially here in America) use large calibers as a way of compensating for small dicks and other insecurities more than for actual, plausible use. If we were talking FMJ milspec ammo I'd agree a 9mm won't hang with a .45...but when you put good, high-quality self defense ammo with hollowpoint ammunition in it and neither gun will make a hole that's easily discerned from the other. Recent studies show that .40 ballistics in most mediums are identical to .45 ACP with less weight and 50% less recoil. Does this make it a better round? No it's higher pressure and it's obnoxiously bad on gun frames...but that doesn't mean it won't do the same thing.

I reload and neither pistol has ever seen a factory load. 210 grain Sierra JHC was 1600 fps with W296 powder and that was my deer and silhouette bullet until I bought a Dan Wesson .357 maximum for silhouette shooting. My bear load was a 300 grain Barnes bullet at 1150 fps and of the 6 bears I killed with that round only one needed a second shot. A 240 grain jsp was right at 1350 fps with H110 powder.

    I'm a wheelgun fanatic and a pure pleasure-shooter, and have been under the spell of the extremely-versatile 10×25mm since the early-mid-nineties. The poster is engaging in an improper argument; even as a Ten-Ringer my all-time favourite firearm is a pre-lock 5" 610, moonclips and all. I'd imagine if I were hunting (I won't invoke Ted or any of the hardliners here) something that weighs twice as much as myself, I'd not be doing it with a pistol-cartridge, full-stop. I don't doubt that you _could_, and granted as I said I've never hunted, but were I to decide to equip myself for such an expedition, a pistol of any type would be a sort of afterthought that would give me a dip in the hip because some part of me figures I'd be bad-ass, dumba nd unlucky enough to be assaulted by some other apex-predator and the dumber portion of that same stupidity would assume I'd snap into CQB mode and square off with said primal killing-machine. I wouldn't. I wouldn't with the hottest 10mm, I wouldn't with my 629, I wouldn't with a .500, I wouldn't with any of those crazy sticks of dynamite with a lead ingot on the end that John Linebaugh, Mike Cyrus, J.D. Jones or any other brilliant wildcatters could chamber. Why? Because I need more barrel, damn it! the more barrel, the better, and if we're going over about seven inches of that you might as well bring a rifle. Internal ballistics for even mediocre rifle rounds with shit bullets all but make a mockery of all but the luckiest pistol-rounds, at least in two-legged fleshbags, and I would imagine results only improving against critters with weird anatomical distribution, oft-thick bones scattered hither and yon, and in some cases seriously thick hides and well over an inch of "it's anyone's guess where this one's going" fat.
    Unfortunately I also feel a need to point out that you're not comparing like loads from like platforms and you give absolutely no hard data to crunch to back up whatever claim (which sounds like some dickhead on a forum was using certain numbers from quite hot 10mm loads comparing favourably with off-the-shelf .44 Mag loads and which shot flatter, too. It's impressive, and people like going overboard, especially us fanboys). I don't see any need to discriminate between the two chamberings, and if anyone wants to toss out their 629 or G20 or (please please please) 610 I'll take it you'll never hear a peep out of me about the capability or handling of the weapon; I've had several of all three and they were all exquisite to shoot (the N-frames in particular, but the G20 was every bit as tough and accurate and almost dared me not to clean it). I think the most impressive overall strength of the 10mm is its ability (by those with the means and knowledge to do so) to be loaded from a featherlight comp puffer all the way out to a goddamn-near external-ballistic contender to the .44Mag, and tales about the 10mm Magnum ought to charm the pants off of any big-bore enthusiast, no matter his personal persuasion. Just so long as you never own or mention a .45ACP, you're my friend; let's quit getting so wound up about hyperbolic theoretical equivalents of "my dad's cartridge can kick your dad's cartridge's ass" and get out there and either find a way to make firearms and ammunition more affordable and accessible or just shoot our pay-cheques away as buddies.We have a lot in common! Hell, I'll even let you shoot my guns, we're both paying out the ass for ammo and blisters. Big-bore enthusiasts, be we 10mm-nuts, .500S&W nutcases, Keith-tuned mid-forty-cal bangers, or even That One Guy who always shows up with his fuckin' Contender and every eight minutes makes everyone stop and look around unsettledly. Let's be more social at the range. Compliment a pretty gun, a guy with a great technique, someone with something you've always been dying to try, or even that one who looks like they're somehow not having fun. We're shooters, and we can spot fellow big-bore fans fairly quick. At the very least let's nod and smile and maybe strike up a conversation if time permits.
    Unless you're that prick in shitkickers with the pockets of your 501s full of challenge-coins, open-carrying a cocked-and-locked 1911 (perhaps in a drop-leg thigh rig with an EGA/skull on it) and a handcuff-case for your Skoal. If you're that guy, just get back in your six-cylinder Rustang and go back to watching your MMA, beating your wife/dog and playing Call Of Duty.

    Whoever says 10mm is the same as .44mag is ignorant and a fool. I've never seen or heard anyone make that comparison but I do know that ballistically it's hotter than a .357 and really close to a .41 Mag. But you guys already know that.
    If you want 6 rounds of kick-ass Boom through a big revolver go with a .44. If you want 15 rounds of (near) kick-ass Boom through an autoloader the Glock G20 is really hard to beat.

    • @ModernWarflare
      @ModernWarflare 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer 15 rounds of tried and true in the Glock 21. Ammo is much cheaper and in the unlikely event that I need to use it my hearing I won't go permanently deaf since most .45 ammo is subsonic.

  • @233kosta
    @233kosta 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Not so much about it being "same as" .44 magnum, it's more a case of having 15 shots in a mag that will do 75%-80% as much damage a piece vs 6 or 5 and a slower reload

    • @plowboysghost
      @plowboysghost 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you need that many you're dead anyway. That being said there are things out there that require 100% because it'll take 100 at 80% to do the trick while it'll take 1 at 100% for the same result. It's why nobody hunts grizzlies with 1000 .22lr.

    Odd. I like this thought: Is 1 44 better than 1 10mm? Certainly. Are 13 10mm more effective than 6 44RemMag?
    How many targets do I need to destroy?

  • @Evirthewarrior
    @Evirthewarrior 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I have seen morons say that 9mm was a superior round to 5.56 because its bigger and slower, therefore it will cause more damage.
    Guy actually tried to justify why a 9mm pistol was better for home defense than a AR-15, some people are just naturally stupid.

    • @IdleDrifter
      @IdleDrifter 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A 9mm pistol or carbine would be a more practical choice for home defense than a AR-15 due to a lower chance of over penetration. Something to consider while living in a urban sprawl.

      IdleDrifter
      5.56 is more likely to break up inside a wall than most any pistol ammo. The silly idea that round x can't penetrate a wall is just right out, a 380 with JHP rounds is likely to go through a wall. A 12ga with 00 buck is likely to go through a wall All common ammo will penetrate a wall, it's drywall and maybe, if you are lucky, a single 2x4.

    • @IdleDrifter
      @IdleDrifter 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the bullet construction. I never said 9mm or pistol ammo would not penetrate walls. I said over penetration. I've also fired 5.56 ammo with various bullet types. The hunting rounds and military green tips M885s tend to punch through objects than pistol ammo.
