Fiona apple done a great version for the TV show the affair ,I watched that three times ,5 seasons and cried every time ,esp when this was playing .one of my all time favourites since 1985, I don't like Brandon flowers but this is a great cover ❤
I think this may be the best pop/rock love song ever written. Why? Because it glorifies the unique qualities of the person of interest's outlook and world view, not for their physical beauty. There's no begging, or longing....just sheer admiration. Plus....it has a really fun and playful feel that supports the basic idea. I actually like the somewhat simpler arrangement of the Killers' version. And Mr. Flowers nails the vocal. Bravo to all, especially the Waterboys who crafted this masterpiece.
I have no way of knowing but I'd suggest he'd recently lost a loved one with the lyric of "...Wings & you just flew". He did struggle to keep it together.

My mom loved those 80’s songs to sometimes would bring tears to my eyes to when I would hear those songs.
At 2:10 he almost breaks in tears for such a powerful lyric.
