I don't know why this jeweler claims ammonia is ok to use on gold. the only chemical that reacts with gold is ammonia. the jeweler that made my wedding rings told me to avoid any cleaner with ammonia because it will turn gold black or spotted black. if you don't believe me look up the MSDS sheet on ammonia it will show that if pure ammonia comes in contact with ammonia gold will explode. I learned that in water treatment to remove our rings when working with pure ammonia in the rare chance when repairing an ammonia leak that a drop of the chemical could potentially drip onto your ring and blow your finger off.
