    Great reaction to probably the greatest live performance of all time. Composer/lead guitarist/singer Mark Knopfler and drummer Terry Williams, one of the greatest rock drummers ever, put on a show that may never be duplicated. Thanks so much for playing the video straight through and THEN doing your review!!!! Far to many reviewers chop this up into pieces.

    What makes Mark Knopfler’s performance even more legendary is the fact that he is ACTUALLY left handed playing a right handed guitar and also FINGERPICKING it which is what he is famous for

    As a UK band, some of Dire Straits' songs (virtually all written by lead singer/guitarist Mark Knopfler) are lyrically UK-centric, but Knopfler's also written many US inspired ones too. Telegraph Road which several commenters have already mentioned is an epic tale of the rise and subsequent deterioration of Detroit. Planet of New Orleans is, as the name suggests, all about that city. On Every Street is about the search for a missing person on the streets of New York.
    Knopfler's solo work includes songs like Boom Like That, which is the story of Ray Kroc the man behind McDonalds, Baloney Again about a black preacher and his wife travelling around the southern US states in days gone by, Sailing to Philadelphia is a duet with James Taylor all about the men who mapped the Mason Dixon Line, Speedway of Nazareth is about US motor racing and If This Is Goodbye performed with Emmylou Harris is a poignant tribute to those who lost their lives in 9-11. There are many others.

    This is one of the greatest performances ever from anyone, Mark Knopfler was untouchable during this time. You next want to react to Tunnel of Love from the Alchemy concert, which is the same as this performance.

    I think what our British musicians have got down to a T, is:
    'oh, you thought we were done with you?.... no chance, your ears are getting bashed up for another few minutes!'
    The art of 'let's fucking GO!'
    Nice reaction bro 👍

    Great reaction!!! You might want to listen to the masterpiece that is Telegraph Road from the same concert. It will totally blow your mind in terms of the wonderful storytelling and the all round sublime musianship. For me it's the best rock song ever written. Take care. Best wishes from the UK.

    No one ever suggests Private Investigations. It was a UK Number 2 single for them and it is brilliant.

    The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
    It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.
    What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
    Making a living like that wouldn't suck.🤑🤑
    Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩🤩🤩🤩

    Thank you so much, woke up to see this dropped and it's its already made my day.
    Their song 'Brothers In Arms' will move you to tears and 'Walk Of Life' (particularly the MV) will make you smile.
    Thanks again brother and stay safe

      @@mighty_themultitasker if you prefer live performances then I'd recommend the version of Brothers in Arms from The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert which Dire Straits headlined at Wembley Stadium in 1988. Lead singer/guitarist Mark Knopfler gets really emotional during this one and channels that into his performance.
      Other live performances (and there are so many wonderful ones to choose from) I'd particularly recommend would include:
      Money for Nothing from the Music for Montserrat concert at the Royal Albert Hall. It's Mark Knopfler as a solo artist rather than Dire Straits but includes Sting, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and an orchestra and choir clearly having a great time as Knopfler plays one of the greatest riffs of all time.
      I Think I Love You Too Much from Knebworth '90 with Eric Clapton joining the band and trading solos with Knopfler in a wonderful blues song.
      You and Your Friend from the On The Night album/dvd. Knopfler's guitar interspersed with Paul Franklin's pedal steel just soars into the night air.

    Telegraph Road or anything else from Alchemy Live is pure gold. Most live performances by Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler give you something extra that isn't on the studio version. I don't know if many other artists do it, but he did offer concert soundboard recordings on guitar shaped flash drives for many of his shows. Just waiting to see what he stockpiled through the pandemic now that he and the band went back in studio earlier this year.

    Great instrumentation, though I didn't hear anything connected to Swing. Just a hunch, but I think "Dire Straights" was the name of the song since the band kept saying "We are the Sultans Of Swing."

    • @jjc5407
      @jjc5407 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nah, the band is Dire Straits and the song is Sultans of Swing. It's all about a guy hearing a jazz band called the Sultans of Swing playing in a pub. The songwriter/lead singer/lead guitarist Mark Knopfler based it on an actual experience.

    • @bartonbagnes4605
      @bartonbagnes4605 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jjc5407Thanks. So this band is Dire Straights, but there is a group called Sultans Of Swing. Is any of their music on TH-cam?

    • @jjc5407
      @jjc5407 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bartonbagnes4605 the band is Dire Straits, not Dire Straights. 😉 There is a wealth of their music on TH-cam. They're one of the best selling bands of all time and were probably the biggest band in the world for a while in the mid-eighties. They belatedly got inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Mark Knopfler the songwriter/lead guitarist/singer famously opted not to attend.
      As for The Sultans of Swing, I very much doubt any of their music exists. This song was Dire Strait's very first single released back in 1978. It's highly unlikely anyone was recording small pub bands back then, let alone jazz bands. It was just a little bit before the Internet became a thing, let alone TH-cam. 😊
      Mark Knopfler has even said the band wasn't very good!
