Excellent, fair review! I bought a Bolt V2 as my first cycling GPS and it is generally really good, but here's my 'moan list': -The lag on turn notifications occurs more frequently than I would like. -Why blue for re-routing? It's the same colour as some topographic mapping features - why not red? -Re-routing doesn't show the whole route and is not always the most logical way to get back on track - too much of a leap of faith required. -Deleting routes from 3rd parties - I've got a bunch of routes on there, created with Ride With GPS that I no longer need. Wahoo's own solution for this (delete in the 3rd party app and re-sync) hasn't worked for me. Most frustrating.
Excellent review, as always. Thanks for this! I'm on the Mega XL, and trying to decide on something that will show me whats left of the climbs and segments I'm on.
I have both Garmin 530 and a bolt v1. Although there are items like bike profiles that I prefer on Garmin the Bolt v1 has never disappointed in route navigation where the Garmin has had me doing u turns on basic routes. I love your always to the point reviews. Probably the best on the internet
Nice review. But I don't agree about the tie wrap issue. I appreciate the versatility of being able to mount the adapter any where including the frame if I choose to. I have two of these adapters on two of my bikes.
You can buy the Garmin stem mounts (which use rubber 0-ring straps) and just use a pair of diagonal cutters (or a sharp utility knife) to trim the tabs on one side of the mount so that the Bolt will fit. There are several TH-cam videos showing how to do this. Since the stem mounts can be mounted in any of 4 orientations, the 90 degree offset of the Bolt mount vs. Garmin can be easily accomodated.
The main thing I don’t like with my bolt is the auto pause feature. They need to take a page out of garmins book where you can set the auto pause to trip out over a certain speed. Like 5 or 10 mph.
I really like how the Varia radar integrates with the Bolt 2, much better than with a Garmin unit, for me. The Climb page is not so great. I always get confused about the scale of the climb view.
If you would like a wahoo mainly for navigation which one you will buy now? New bolt v2, current Roam or wait for a new Roam version but with no info up to now?
Spot on video. I am strongly considering a switch to Garmin, they caught up with regards to stability of the system and now have features like Climb Pro, which sounds amazing. Wahoo is sleeping behind the wheel.
On the screen setup point the changes are pushed live to the device, so I always look at the fields on the device then make adjustments in the phone I'm holding in my other hand. Massive agree on bike profiles, it's especially useful when one bike has power and another doesn't, duplicating pages is fine, but it's just another page to cycle through. I agree on the stem mounts, but am curious what alternatives you'd suggest? O-rings maybe?
You do make a good point about the fields! As for the mount, yep, good old O rings that basically everyone else uses. I have a bag full of them from years of GPS testing.
I've had the Bolt V2 for quite a while now and really like it, there are a few issues though for me. The stem mount, absolutely I ended up using my Garmin mounts and leave the adapter on the Bolt for this reason. Re-routing I have had some bad experiences with it wanting to send you several miles to get back to where you went off route rather than ride 100m to re-join the route further towards your destination and then having got myself back on the route it kept trying for several miles to send me down un--rideable tracks still insistent I go back to where I left the route until it eventually accepted I was going the right way. I don't use Strava segments but tried it and found I got the Go alert when it was already too late, you need a bit of warning or count down to where it actually starts? At least that was how it appeared to me but I admit I didn't try with it much. Turn by turn navigation is fine for me but it does seem to alert a bit late, not a problem on the sort of routes I do (mainly rural) but I could see it being an issue in built up areas. The phone app is fine but it isn't fully functional on my Moto G4, for instance I can't use the colour for power and HR zones, I had to borrow an iPad for that and I'm not going to upgrade my phone just to programme my Bolt V2
same issue on the Roam here... >> wanting to send you several miles to get back to where you went off route rather than ride 100m to re-join the route further towards your destination
i use a system which has a preview for the pages and i quite like the wahoo's list system because of the ability to zoom in and out. this means you can change on the fly how many data points you are going to use.
But do they now show streenames (on the map), because that was why I choose Garmin last few times! Also my brother has a Wahoo and it seems like it needs to update it every few rides.
My first bolt side buttons started peeling off. The v2 looks the same, worried if that will eventually peel off as well. Everything else, it’s good for me.
Is the no bike profiles still a thing? I only have one XC bike, but I do use it to ride on road during the week and long MTB rides every weekend, and the fields I use for road riding are not the same I use when I do MTB riding. I've always been curious about Wahoo and was thinking on changing my current Edge 830 for the Bolt V2, but this is surely a deal breaker for me as I don't wanna keep changing up pages every week or even during the week (sometimes in the summer I do MTB night rides, just to do road riding again in two days)
hi in the wahoo bolt v2 with the navigator on you can enlarge the information that appears in the upper box when it's time to change direction or other info provided by the cycle computer ... distances etc etc?
Umm at 2:58 it looks like my Cinelli Neos bars. They're pretty nice. The market has changed a bit since I bought those so I'd probably buy something with a shallower drop nowadays
Well, I have that set as well! The Garmin and wahoo are pretty close and I’d happily take either. The Karoo 2 is a total oddball. Part awesome, part baffling, but so damn nice to ride with.
Worth upgrading from v1? Also, do you know if they fixed the button cover de-bonding issue that wrote off my first v1? With you on the live segment management bit and the bike profiles ... So very annoying.
Lost my Bolt V1 by leaving it on the bed cover of my truck and driving away after a ride. Didn’t even think twice about which version to replace it with.
I've been waiting for this unit for 2 years, but have come to appreciate longer battery life. Which GPS would you recommend if you wanted longer battery life with a similar form factor? Connected devices Wahoo tickr, and stages power meter
It depends how much bettery you want and how much you want to spend. I do rate the Bryton Rider 420. Big ass battery, generally nice to use with a few quirks, and cheap! I have a full review if you want to learn more 😁
Thanks for the great Review, Have you tried Bolt 2 with Garmin Varia Radar? How much real life battery does it provide with Radar connected? Real time vs Claimed battery. to put in perspective, Bolt 1 claims 12 hours but with Radar barely last 8 hours.
Bike GPS for the first time in my life got bolt v2 bundles with a bunch of cables tie😮 come on WAHOO. Make a brand name proud. Speed sensor mount on the wheel is most frustrating. Didn’t ride yet, let see how good at it.
Really wish absolutely anyone would test any bike GPS in a city where almost all people live. I have seen myself from riding in Tokyo to riding out in the country that all head units are fine in the sticks, but my wahoo, karoo2 and edge 1030 all crash and stop working trying to get me through Tokyo streets. Yet according to youtubers all are great for navigation...
Dude I wish I lived in Tokyo so I could test GPSs. I love Tokyo! Unfortunately, I can only test where I live, a city of a million and not exactly a world famous skyline
@Ride Adelaide I'm finding the map / direction prompt lags around 20 metres even when the reported GPS accuracy is 5m. Annoying in dense paths but not the end of the world. What's your experience?
Huh. That’s odd. I didn’t notice any lag with directions. I got plenty of warning maybe 200m from the turn then a bleep close to the turn. All seemed fine with my testing
@@JustRideAdelaide No real issue with the long range guidance, but pay careful attention to the map approaching intersections and when it bleeps to say turn here. It's been consistently behind in each update including the late Dec 2021.
Yes, I get this too Warren - not all of the time or even the majority of the time, but sufficiently frequently to be a big annoyance. It's like it's saying "straight on, straight on, straight on - no, wait, you missed a turn back there".
I like watching this channel more than GCN. Imo you should have about 100x more subscribers! Thanks as always for the great reviews and content
Much appreciated mate! That sort of feedback means a lot 😁

Oooooor, hear me out, Wahoo could make a mount that isn't terrible 🤔
Hi and thanks for the great review. Which one would you buy tomorrow? Edge 830 or BOLT 2?
The main thing I don’t like with my bolt is the auto pause feature. They need to take a page out of garmins book where you can set the auto pause to trip out over a certain speed. Like 5 or 10 mph.
The best new feature that it is missing is the ability to scroll around the map. That is a game changer for the bolt.
I really like how the Varia radar integrates with the Bolt 2, much better than with a Garmin unit, for me.
The Climb page is not so great. I always get confused about the scale of the climb view.

If you want good navigation with your Garmin you'll need the 1030plus the 530/830 seriously lack in this area.

this is very concerning to me. i have bolt v1 with same issue, and this information pretty much dissuades me from going to v2
what would you prefer for stem mount? I think there are many aftermarket options at this point
