      I really like the prison because of how it shows that the empire is about order, like how they’re are seven floors,seven rooms on each floor,seven teams in each room, seven people in each team, and they are all competing against each other in order to not get punished and they work hard for fear of punishment.

      The Empire's portrayal in Andor is probably its best ngl. It doesn't come across as goofy or bumbling like it does in a lot of other media (to some degree, OT included). I remember being younger and almost rooting for the Imperials because they were nearly a "fun" kind of evil. But in Andor, it's not something you can or should root for. It isn't cool or badass. It's a fascistic hellhole, and it genuinely feels like something that should be resisted, which goes so well with the themes the show was going for.

      Andor really potrays a full developed world that has characters with personal motivations with the shadow of a tyrannical Empire looking over. I like the shades of grey, the fact that it potrays the personal cost of rebellion and yet simultaneously it’s urgent nature, for each relinquishing of a right means more sacrifices to fight for it back. This is for me the best Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back, which itself was quite amazing for it’s more thoughtful take on the nature of heroism. I’ve heard that the second season is already written and if the writing is even half as good, I think this makes up for the vacuous and underwhelming sequel trilogy.

      I think the unexpected praise for Andor combined with the lukewarm reception to the new season of the mandolorian shows Star Wars as a whole is at a crossroads. Personally I think the franchise needs to take a more nuanced and mature approach to storytelling like Andor or the KOTOR series. Leave the original movies, including the prequels at this point, alone and either disregard or burn down and reboot the sequel events and actually flesh out a plan for fleshed out story in fleshed out worlds with fleshed out characters. Disney got in over their heads and thought as long as we make something people will love it, those days are long gone.

      That’s going to take some time. Disney generally has fairly strict standards for any mature focused show. The regular producers of Star wars product meh to shameful shows that need to be uncanonized. Too many fans like the surface level, generic action shows. This is an gen in the rough. It’ll be decades before Star Wars can get rid of the restrictions, the bad films and shows, and find high quality producers, before shows and films like Andor become the norm.

      The thing is that there is enough room in Star Wars to have everything.
      Fun silly stories for kids. Simple action stories. And serious adult shows to talk about real issues. I don’t think that there is one true way to make good Star Wars. All you need is writers who know what they are doing and so we can get everything

      Yeah, that's why I'm not a big fan of people wanting to blur the line between heroes and villains in Star Wars
      Sure, with the Rebels you can try things with different factions who have different views, like Saw Guerrera's cell, but the Empire ? The Empire is a fascist, xenophobe, authoritarian regime ruled by the closest thing the franchise has to the devil. You can write complexity in the way it works, in its machinations, hierarchy and effects on the galaxy, but at the end of the day the Empire is evil ; raw, unchecked evil.

      idk if this is a hot take or whatever but my biggest star wars pet peeve is the clone troopers being retconned into not knowing about order 66. Its not even like it damages much of the modern continuity either; another questionably canon piece of information was in regards to the others orders that could be executed, such as 65(?) which iirc was an order to kill the senate (or at least something similar to that). These were emergency protocols in the event the worst happens. Im sure a clone might be confused at first at the thought of having a “kill all jedi” prompt but thats easily excusable when right next to it is a “kill palpatine” prompt

      @@Longshot441 but that is what would make it more real and therefore more interesting, bc the question would be less about how the Jedi fell and more about why would the clones be willign to kill the Jedi without a second thought? And I do think that @manga profile picture's theory that having other orders like it would make it more palatable and somewhat normalizes the violence, although I think it would have to go more into depths like Andor's take on the banality of evil and how far people can go in name of "order" and "justice".

    • @Longshot441
      @Longshot441 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hcxpl1 I agree with you. In reality it would have the Gra fractered and a number of Jedi and their troops in rebel.
      Majority of the jedi would still likely be killed. As Jedi really were apathic and saw the clones in the same light as droids. So I know a lare number of clones wouldn't questions things.
      Not to mention the newer clones later down the line that were more obidiant. Or the reg poeple introduced into the ranks way later.
      Lucas just wanted a clean story to bring us full circle with the orginal triology.

    • @hcxpl1
      @hcxpl1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Longshot441 The Jedi were certainly to high and mighty to have seen that one coming, enebriated with pwoer and disconnected from their people and their own armies. Where I disagree with you, though, is the idea that it is all bc Lucas wanted to keep it nice and neat for the sake of the saga, bc, mind you, the movies themselves don't necessarily contradict this - it wasn't until the 5th or 6th season of Clone Wars that they began to establish the ground work for how order 66 came to be - and it could easily haven't been mind control, which would certainly make it more complex and tricky to navigate, but that is what would have ultimately make it meaningful.

    In Andor, far more clearly than in any Star Wars show before, you feel how fragile the rebellion is, how that fragility makes it desperate at times, even straight-up crazy - and you feel the closeness of death, the certainty of it and the weight of it for those who have had to give up all their hopes for their own lives. If they hate, if they fail, if they go too far sometimes, I feel like the challenge is to understand and to forgive them for it. Glad to hear your take on it, Sage - brilliant show.

    Never has a Star Wars show so thoroughly explored Totalitarianism in power, along with its peculiar ideology of total domination from within through the mass atomization of the whole people, brought about from isolation and erosion of the public trust, and the total elimination of spontaneity in peoples lives. These are the preconditions for turning the actions of every person into reactions so one person cannot be defined separately from all the others. Under such conditions resistance becomes near impossible as not 1o people can come together and form bonds of trust as any semblance of common humanity becomes harder and harder to identify as thinking is replaced by conditioned responses. Totalitarian power, in the views of it's leaders, is basically created through the organization of isolated people who are atomized into individual units whose coming together, essentially, draw power similarly to how friction or galvanic currents generates electricity. As a result these movements tend to openly defy rationality by adhering to an endless and structureless momentum that must always remain in motion.
    The only way to enforce this kind of continuous mass momentum is through constant terror and constant purges. Violence, intolerance, and hatred is not based in any constitutionalized set of principles, it's simply what allows an atomized group of people to remain organized and provides the momentum so necessary for Totalitarian organizations to carry out their murdurous and dominating objectives for dominations sake alone. And never has a show more embodied that the best defense against such an ideology is spontaneity and love, because the only thing that holds it together is hate and terror.

    As a Star Wars fan, I was always asking myself why the Empire was bad. the stereotypical storm trooper with bad aim, Darth Vader as the empire's enforcer, and the evil emperor with unlimited power. However, things have changed in the Star Wars universe. It is not just those 3 characters anymore; the empire in general has bad people who are desensitized and devoid of emotion when dealing with regular people, and that is scary. How harshly they treat their prisoners, their disgusting methods of torture, and the reality that the ones causing all this harm are people just like them. I haven't watched Andor, but after watching this, I think I will. Thank you, raspy man, for this amazing review!

Ideologically I’ve never rooted for the empire, but I’ve always found Vader and Stormtroopers “cool.” In THIS show, I didn’t feel that at all...they were just horrifying. I wonder if they intentionally used fewer stormtroopers and more people in uniforms, it feels more real. It’s a story about fascism, imperialism and corporate, capitalist government. And that’s not cool, it’s disturbing. As it should be!

    *Andor was so well written* that it really highlighted how POORLY The Mandolorian is written.. a puppet is carrying that show rn- and the characters have the depth of a puddle after 3 seasons - of the plot seeming like it’s leading somewhere.

    • @danielcarty6057
      @danielcarty6057 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I disagree. Andor is a powerful dramatic fictional biopic with a course that can be seen. It has strengths the Mandalorian does not, but essentially is a story of war - how and why people lay down their lives to rebel. What makes it especially potent is that it draws on real experiences and fears as well as logical world building to create fake evils. Evils that we had only been warned about it lighter tales.
      While the Mandalorian may fall due to studio meddling in later seasons (I have not seen the third season), in the first two seasons it’s an action saga that delivers with heart and intrigue within the world healing from the aftermath of an oppressive regime - but it’s about a man opening his wounded heart to a small child and the lengths he will go to for the child’s safety. The puppet being so cute is supposed to get us to appreciate the lengths Mando goes through to protect the child. If you treat each season as its own movie, like we are treating Andor, Season 3 might just be a failed sequel.
      In the end, it’s the difference between a civil war drama and a Wild West movie. Two different goals, two different but enjoyable outcomes.
      Now if you want to talk poorly written, you can discuss Book of Boba Fett.

    I really liked Andor, when I first saw Rougue One, I knew it would be one of my favorite movies in general, and I didn't had to much hope for Andor, but as the Mexican I am, I was rooting for Diego Luna, and said let's give it a try, The first 2 episodes were just waiting and waiting, but just were so much questions, and by the 4th episode I was into it, I wanted to see more.
    I think just as "The Boys". "Andor" is one of the best in their class (sorry English isn't my first language), Andor shines in their characters, in their photography, Andor shines were other series or media fails, that's its expose characters, show that not all good people its purely good, and not all evil people is just wickedness.
    Another thing, is when you root for Luthen, you know people will die, that probably not innocent, but they wouldn't be aware of their sacrifice, you question wether the line of the rebelion should be put in, if the sacrifice is necessary or just a way to claim power.
    Andor is not revolutionary, a piece of art in concepts about imperialism and rebelion, but it's something build with people invested in the proyect and not just looking for the selling.

    12:27 _"Those who are being watched will instinctively choose to do that which is wanted of them without even realizing that they are being controlled"_ - Many systems of censorship operate this way. They incorporate severe and arbitrary rules on what can and cannot be said - often punishing 'offenders' without any clear reasoning. The result is people who go well out of their way to self-censor, for fear of saying the wrong thing - Even if they know they aren't *actually* saying anything wrong. That insecurity constantly creeps in the back of their mind, and causes them to moderate their speech both consciously and unconsciously, and before long, begins to condition their behaviour and thought process. Because they just DON'T know what will get them in trouble.
    You need go no further than this very platform to experience that phenomenon at play. It's very real, and very common...
    Andor does an excellent job of depicting how daunting the Empire truly is for the average person, without portraying them as cartoonishly evil and destructive, and it does so on a relatively small scale that an individual can comprehend and empathize with - It's an understanding that cannot be derived from watching several planets be destroyed. It's too large and too far removed from our ordinary scope and understanding. And far too impersonal.
    Unfortunately this series seems to get passed over for the much more simplistic spectacles people associate with "real Star Wars" - Thanks for appreciating this series with your great analysis. This kind of writing should be encouraged by all means...

    To me it’s also incredible how Andor manages to show a great deal about the Force, or more specifically the Dark Side, without mentioning it once, without once making it seem like it even exists. And yet, when you realize that the “wound at the center of the Galaxy” Maarva talks about in her speech is The Emperor/Darth Sidious, the power of the Sith becomes tangible, and more terrifying than ever. When Vader said that the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force, THIS is what he meant. One Sith Lord, ONE, without any physical display of power, is able to torture the very soul of an entire galaxy, and Andor shows exactly how. It’s like everyone is trapped into a cage of darkness. The weakest give in to it and become thralls of the Empire, and even those with stronger hearts are mostly kept in line by despair.
    And mind you, this is Sidious still ruling the Galaxy from the shadows. This is him showing RESTRAINT. One can only imagine what kind of hellhole the Galaxy was when the Sith ruled it openly.

It isn't expansionist in the sense of conquering new land outside our borders, its far more subtle, its the maintenance of empire rather than the building of empire. We were a colonial enterprise to begin with and that has never really left us. Though it is not nearly as overt as it was under direct British Rule, Canada (the geo-political state, not the people/nation) is a business venture in a way. Our systems are built atop a foundation and framework of controlling the land and its resources, to make money.
    Some people might say that countries are basically businesses and they're supposed to try to make money, and that may be true, but if that is the case then I have no reason to have any allegiance to my country, and yet despite everything, I have some kind of allegiance. The Maple Leaf still stirs some small sense of pride or comfort, identity perhaps. I can't help but smile when I find out someone is Canadian, or feel some pride when I approve of our representatives' actions in foreign relations. I can't help but feel a slight distain for American things (expect for their ginger ale that shit slaps, but it still is a little conflicting for me to admit that), despite the fact that we are in many ways, one people.
    This is getting off topic and I don't have time to bring it back around but thank you to anyone who read it. I'm sorry to disappoint.

    This is exactly how the huge company I work for operates. We as the workers were so terrified of losing our jobs in this fragile economy; we let the ruling managers to destroy our company culture, working conditions and self respect. They just don't care what happens to people as long as they got the job done right. I've never felt more hopeless for the future in my entire adult life.

    I like Andor's potrayal of the empire. The empire actually looks impressive, powerful, and awe inspiring now. They have absolute control and domination, as well a regal aesthetic worthy of any imperial nation. Great video btw, though I don't think the empire is any more evil than any other empire in fiction or irl. They still seem tame and reasonable by comparison.
    A real evil empire for me would be the EFSF from the Gundam franchise. They're just blatantly insidious, corrupt, obviously hypocritical, morally preachy, and the worse part is that they are portrayed as the good guys, all because the supposedly antagonist faction is more ruthless, honest, having a justified and actually righteous goal, as well as being more stylish and aesthetically pleasing. Yeah I'm a Zeon fanboy. They got the right idea, plus they just look better.

    Andor is one of the best things in Star wars ever. Personally I like more scifi-stuff but this sort of grassroots-level stories show the world of Star Wars in a more horrifying realistic light.

    Andor honestly fixed what was always my biggest qualm with how the Empire was portrayed. Even though they're a lethal dictatorship, they were never really treated like a threat in a realistic way for me. Yeah obviously Vader and Palpatine are fantastic villains who held the Empire together, but their underlings with maybe the exception of Tarkin never really felt like they were people meant to be taken seriously. Stormtroopers are easily killed off. The officers are always mocked or killed off. Their battle and mind strategy with the exception of Hoth were never really that great. I mean when your strongest machines can be taken out by literal teddybears, I start to get a bit annoyed.
    Whereas Andor actually makes them feel like the lethal, violent and ruthless dictatorship that they are on paper. In Andor, I FULLY understand why they were able to hold onto their power for twenty years under Palpatine's leadership. This empire is actually really intelligent and because of that, they are dangerous. They are also ruthless and violent. The fact that they slaughtered a planet of aliens and recorded the sound of their children screaming and manipulated that into a torture device is absolutely horrifying. Or the fact that they have no problems dispelling an entire faction because one of them screwed up on Ferrix. There are so many things you can get into but this Empire is taken seriously for once instead of being played for laughs and I really like that. It's long overdue for the Empire to actually be treated like a legitimate threat. They're not even taken seriously in Kenobi despite it being a show taking place where they are hunting down and murdering Jedi.
    Andor was truly a breath of fresh air in nearly every way.

    My question is: if prisoners who do their time just get sent to other prisons, wouldn't it cause unrest more often, like more attemps at uprisings or more suicides? Or it might just mean that mass killings in prisons happen often which is a terryfying thought

    Just Brilliant. Great and accurate analysis.
    I lived in an authoritarian regime and I can confirm all of it. The cameras and ears in the public that are just waiting for you to make a wrong move so they can screw your life while regime by meddling in economy and creating small challenges (like a problem in utility services that is not too big to cause a full shut down but its enough to cause annoyance) makes you to always be busy trying to live, never have time to read or socialize or anything just live and work non stop.
    The scary part is that people actually know what is happening to them and at some point they just don't have any energy or life in them to fight back. In Iran we called this behavior the frog slowly cooking in the pot.

    What I find so fascinating about the Aldhani arc of Andor is the depiction of cultural genocide, which is just the final destination of cultural imperialism. I don't think I have seen any writer depicting this phenomenon before. The idea that a minor culture is being... worn out and displaced by a dominant hegemon is scary but so invisible that people just... "start not to notice", to put it in Luthen's words. It's so invisible that many people don't even realize that cultural imperialism is happening in real life, right under their noses.
