      Yes, I probably would've turned into a hermit if I had that much entertainment at my fingertips in the 90s. Things are different now though, no amount of entertainment is seemingly enough to keep people engaged.

    I still own my Dreamcast from 20 years ago 😂. I unlocked all the items on Capcom Vs. SNK just this year finally. Thank God for having a Neo Geo Pocket with SNK Vs. Capcom and a link cable to help speed the process of acquiring points. This is an excellent video. Thank you.

      Not a bad time to pick one up with the maturity of an ODE like the GDEMU. I'd love to do the same with a platform like the Saturn but its prohibitively expensive right now.

      These days there are so many cool things to do with older consoles, it's amazing :)

    I just bought a GDEMU clone and I watched a lots of these videos the last few days. Yours is one of the best i've seen so far. Straight to the point and with good explanations. No need to modify some parts only because you have them if the original are still good and better. And I really love your soldering technique, clean and professional. You deserve a subscription.

  • @comrade33dawn
    @comrade33dawn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You are AMAZING at desoldering components with just a braid! Guess I should invest in a wider braid. Great restoration!

    • @BorderlineOCD
      @BorderlineOCD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The quality and size make some difference. I have some leftover generic braid that I no longer use because the MG Chemicals stuff works much better. I don't want to toss it out though so I plan to use it until it's done but every time I take it out I feel the difference. You can always add more flux to help a cheap braid wick up the solder better otherwise just buy a couple of rolls of something from a reputable manufacturer, it does make it easier.

  • @PixelShade
    @PixelShade 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The dreamcast is wonderful, I still have mine permanently connected to the TV. It's such a good console with a fantastic arcade/pickup-n-play library. It's nice to play after a hard day at work, or for fun when friends are around. One thing I can really recommend is choosing a modern cable/converter. Official VGA cables offer exceptional image quality. but it is hard to find something that works well and doesn't cost a fortune, or even TVs having VGA input. The BitFunX on ebay isn't perfect, but it is a super crystal sharp VGA to hdmi adapter with great color accuracy that requires no extra power, and it is cheap! The only issue is that the built in scaler treats the 720x480 as 640x480 and scale it too much. the image becomes a bit too narrow and the pixelgrid isn't perfect. but for around 16$ on ebay it is leap years away from RCA, and a whole lot better than even the smudgy inaccurate color output of the "pound cable". :)

    • @BorderlineOCD
      @BorderlineOCD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd like to do the HDMI mod when prices come down a little. I have to be honest I can't stand stretched pixels, but that's just me... It doesn't bother some folks so as long as you're enjoying your beloved Dreamcast more power to you.

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BorderlineOCD the pixels aren't actually stretched... it's a slightly narrower 4:3 aspect ratio.... The image is really sharp and you can't really tell about the uneven pixel grid. Until a game uses a lot of consequent midtones. Then you can see an extremely subtle slight rainbow effect on the 16-bit dither pattern (not the pixels themselves).... but it's extremely subtle and only really apparent in Code Veronica, or perhaps shemue in a rainy day. You don't notice a thing in Sonic Adventures, Phantasy Star Online, Soul Calubur, Dead or Alive, Jet Set Radio etc. :) During most cases. the bitfunx does a good job... DC2HDMI is wonderful, but it requires pro level soldering skills and is quite expensive. I also really don't want to cut in my Dreamcast chassi (which is in pristine condition)... I just kind of wished that the bitfunx adapter was available with a scaler that could handle 720x480p properly.

      Had to replace NEC TOKIN. Tested by heating the motherboard with heat gun then keeping the heat on the caps for 15 - 30 seconds. After putting the PS3 back together worked like a charm until it YLODed again. Found some cheapish tantalum replacement caps on ebay (430uf) and replaced the two by RSX, ps3 has been running well for the better part of a year now. When swapping the caps be sure to preheat the whole motherboard and cover the area by the NEC TOKIN with kapton tape to avoid blowing away really small SMDs in that area.

    • @BorderlineOCD
      @BorderlineOCD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I too came across this info during my research and thought it was so unusual. Some repair folks shared anecdotal feedback of repairing the same system multiple times for a blown fuse because kids would ignore his warnings not to yank the controllers out. It couldn't have been so sensitive though otherwise it would have been so much more widespread, not sure.

In a way I like the trial and error because of the satisfaction I get after I finally get a a game or emulator to run. My next goal is to dive into the world of hard mods such as what you're doing. I recently bought a VA1 Dreamcast “as is” with the comment, “powers on, but no cables to test”, for a decent price. Sure enough, while it powered on, it wouldn’t respond to my controller inputs. Bought the repair kit from your link along with the rechargeable cell, and voila! Works like a charm, and better yet, the laser reads discs just fine! I’ve already got a GDEMU on order, but better yet, I can save the laser for my original Dreamcast that I bought for $49.99 back when Sega announced they were discontinuing the Dreamcast in February of 2001. Thanks! I look forward to other videos I can use as reference in the future. If you ever have the opportunity to attempt a laser repair on a fat PS2 (SCPH-31001-R), I look forward to it. My original PS2 has sadly been acting up. :( The R seems to be controversial, because more than one laser was used on this model, apparently.

I already have an Samba De Amigos controller (maracas). I plan on obtaining a driving wheel for Crazy Taxi, wireless controllers, DDR dance pads and all other custom game controllers. And mostly, I want to upgrade the controllers memory module to something that don't need batteries and have far more storage capacity. I've been wanting to update my system for a while now. Looks like all my desired can be fulfilled with just a little money. It's good to live in the future.

    I just picked up a used console-only VA1 Dreamcast that I planned on doing this same conversion on... The controller ports don't work and it powers on otherwise (also with a noisy fan, lol), so I hope it's that fuse when I open her up... Maybe then I can see if the optical drive works (to have as a backup for my original Dreamcast that I bought back in 2000), since I can't get past the clock screen at the moment. I'm assuming that the port board is connected, of course. I haven't opened it up, and it doesn't look like it has been, but either way, this video will certainly help. Thanks for your great content!

      Nice that your optical drive works. I'd love to have a virgin console in addition to this modded build but its an expensive system to collect discs for, so it would be more for the sake of owning it rather than gaming on it.

    Hi there, love your build. Looking pretty clean. I just wanted you to know, that it's definitely possible to combine a USB-GDrom (instead of the GDemu) with a 2TB 2.5inch HDD. But that's only necessary for a complete TOSEC ROM collection of all regions, which is around 1.2 TB.

    If you thread in one of the standoffs into the metal below the GDEMU you can use a screw that was securing the GDrom drive to hold the GDEMU very securely.

    • @BorderlineOCD
      @BorderlineOCD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good idea. I wonder if that was the intention of the board's design? I guess it would only fit on the lower left hole but should be plenty to secure it in place.

    • @Ty-sm9cv
      @Ty-sm9cv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BorderlineOCD you can do this with the lower left AND upper right, I just checked. you have to modify the plastic piece on it a bit to be able to thread into the lower left one IIRC, but it's a lot more secure, which I think is important for the safety of the connector... especially if you're not using one of those extensions
