    I know of a case where a woman wanted to sell a diamond ring her X-Husband gave to her. He told her it was a 2 Karat diamond. She found out it was a 2 Karat Zircon worth a lot less than an actual 2 Karat Diamond of the same looking purity and clarity. The breakup with her X was because he cheated on her with her sister. She found out he even cheated her with the ring.

      Here's the dead giveaway; they never told us what made this ring historically significant, or who it had once belonged to. Why would that important and interesting information have been left out of the story?

    Opening words of the arresting police officer: "... can prove your innocence ..."
    Since when is it up to the defendant to prove his innocence? In a correctly functioning judicial system, it is the job of the public attorney, aided by the police, to prove the defendants guilt, while always taking all evidence into consideration, that point towards his innocence.
    The police officer should be seriously reprimanded for his attempt to unduly pressuring the arrestee.
    And, if the defendant is forced accompany the officer to the station, it is an arrest.
    She should have insisted on either a warrant or a formal summons for questioning.

      If they don't Mirandize you but force you to accompany them, then you have lawful grounds for a lawsuit. Also in a case like this, the police behavior is very aggressive. I wouldn't accompany them unless I had my attorney present. Remember that it's legal for the police to lie to you and do a number of aggressive things during questioning in order to trip you into confessing. They are NOT always the good guys and will try to make you believe that "lawyering up" is a sign of guilt. Nope, just good common sense. Also if you do choose to go voluntarily, insist on recording everything with your smartphone. They may try to resist that but just ask what they have to hide.

    Actually, he could have asked for the ring back when they broke up. In most states an engagement ring only becomes the “property” of the woman after the wedding. It is considered a conditional gift and remains the property of the giver until the marriage contract is signed !

    • @furbysmith3240

      It was never stated that it was an engagement ring, just a gift.

    • @laurenrose2895
      @laurenrose2895 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Actually (perhaps in certain states?) ownership of a ring is dependent on the circumstances of the breakup. If the woman initiated the split, she has to give back the ring, although if she dumps him because of his infidelity that may be different. If the man decides on the breakup, then the woman can keep the ring. As I said, this may differ from state to state.

      I kept my 1 Diamond because it was a Birthday Present and if I gave it back all I woulda gotten was a Plastic bunch of Roses and a Roasting Pan. As you can tell his Theme was the Letter R like Sesame Street. I still wear that Ring and found an Exact ring only Bigger at a Pawn Shop for 400. My Original Smaller ring was 2700.00 New Imagine the price of the second one I found and I only paid 400.

    Entertaining little short story. I would advise the author to change the scene in which the police come for Melissa. The statement that she must prove her innocence to them isn't right. There is such a thing as presumption of innocence and saying something like that could cause problems if the matter went to trial. I also believe that they would have let the recorded conversation go on longer to see if they could get more information. And finally, there is no reason to burst in to arrest him. Just signal her to leave and arrest the guy in the parking lot nice and easy.
