I don't get how she did anything wrong. She bought product, moved product, resold product, and paid workers. That's how every business works.
I don't believe its true, but it is something to do with interstate recyclables. Each state has a budget for their recyclables. Her state paid for local items, not truckloads from a state away. That's the best I can come up with.
Bought recyclables from out of state where people didn't have to pay the recycling tax of $0.05, brought them into the state and charged California $0.05, essentially ripping California off 5 cents per item not bought in California.
It is a business and no business plan no DBA under aged. And interstate commerce
No accounting, no business tax filing workers are employees and if more than 5 then it’s a whole different level

Of course the last one is a big red flag.
The bank must report all transactions 10,000 or more. Bank sends that to state level and federal level. That’s how hey authorities got involved.

Truth. Capital gains tax will pay them for any work you ever did to get anything worth selling. 35 years I worked to improve a 2 unit building and spent more on it than it was actually worth but that's my own doing. I wanted it to be nice and reliable. When selling it recently any profits I would have made went to the government in the form of capital gains. There's really no incentive anymore to get ahead.

People have been busted for this type of thing before. Bringing aluminum cans and plastic bottles from states that don't charge a redemption fee to a state that does like California and then "recycling" them.

You can't import containers from other states then sell them in California. That was clearly the issue. Californians have to pay a deposit per container most states don't.

This video is full of wrong / incorrect facts. The family is not from Pasadena, CA--they are from Riverside. The youngest of the eight are both males in their twenties. They operate a recycling center and shipped in cans and bottles from Arizona to defraud the CRV program. Finally, this is nothing new--other recycling companies have been convicted of doing the same thing since 2015.
