    • @Sanquinity
      @Sanquinity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      Over here in the Netherlands the "standard" is a cappuccino. Though I guess that's just an espresso with foamy milk. :P I personally go for just regular coffee though. Black, medium-strong, one spoon of sugar.
      But yea it's not really JUST people glorifying coffee. Shops are everywhere, pretty much every café and waiting room has a coffee machine, commercials for coffee are on TV all the time and it's advertised as "a great way to have a moment for yourself during lunch" pretty much.
      Though it's definitely at least partly because of the people. Dutch people are huge coffee drinkers. Just woke up? Coffee. Lunch? Coffee. Visiting friends/family for whatever reason? Coffee. Going to an event? Coffee. Just finished dinner? Coffee. No matter where you go, you take or get offered a cup of coffee. :P

    To me it was always obvious that one energy drink here and there if needed was a fair tactical alternative to being tired af but the real problems start in overconsumption or just drinking them when you're not tired

    • @Sanquinity
      @Sanquinity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Had a friend that drank like 4~6 cans a day. Yea that's right, he drank like 2~3 liters of energy drink a day. It was normal for him to stay up until 4~5 am, and only sleep for 4 or so hours most nights. Finally he decided to stop for a while, as he started to recognize he might have a problem. It was like the world was suddenly going in slow-motion for him. Everything felt a little surreal. And he felt like shit for 2 weeks too. I'm glad he toned it down to 1 can a day, but that's still too much imo.
      I used to drink maybe 1~2 cans of energy drink a day back in my teens. Usually red bull or similar but cheaper brands. (even a blueberry flavored one) But I've almost completely stopped. I maybe buy a single can once every 2~3 weeks, and even cola I barely ever drink anymore. I do get a small cup of coffee in the morning, and one about half-way through work though. In the morning it helps me wake up a bit faster, and during work it helps me "boost" through the mid-work slump. :P

    To be fair, the most unhealthy thing in Monster is the sugar content. 54 grams of white sugar in one sitting elicits a huge insulin spike, which is practically begging for insulin resistance and diabetes. Those sugar-free ones are virtually coffee in flavours palatable for people who don't like coffee (like myself). On my first year of med school I would down 2-3 cans no problem, but then I had this realization that relying on caffeine to function properly is basically being a weak addict, and now tea is my only source of caffeine (though I still won't refuse a newly released Monster on an extremely rare basis - I'm talking once or twice a year).

      As a doctor you may find it interesting that I consume rather high doses of caffeine because it is a stimulant that relaxes my head muscles and gives me some localized relief from migraines. It just agrees with me.

    • @hattuli
      @hattuli 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's the pyridoxine HCI that is the most unhealthy 'thing' in Monster and in other energy drinks. Pyridoxine toxicity is the actual cause of many of these modern neurological disorders.

    • @Falaxuper
      @Falaxuper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hattuli You're only partially right - pyridoxine can cause sensory neuropathy (not 'many of the modern neurologic disorders') at doses ranging from 200 to 1000 mg a day - far exceeding the 4 mg found in a regular can, a dose that, in a healthy person, is pretty much negligible. Not to mention that vitamin B6 (another designation for pyridoxine) is water-soluble, so an excess is simply excreted in urine. Diabetes, on the other hand, will screw up your sensory nerve fibers in a blink of an eye. Stay healthy! :)

      It reminds me of the "Big mac a day" guy. But the reason that actually isn't BAD for you, is because you get calcium, oils, protein, carbs, etc. Monster will NEVER be acceptable daily. Few years ago i was heavily addicted to energy drinks,
    especially the classic Monster. For 5 years straight i drinked 1 or 2 cans every day. People recognize me from wearing monster merch: snapbacks, backpacks, hoodies and t-shirts, everything. For me Monster wasn't just a drink, it was a lifestyle. I didn't even realize when i started behave aggressively and hyperactively. Sometimes when i tried to sleep i felt my heart just going crazy, that's when the problems started showing up. One night ambulance came for me because i passed out. Every normal person would stop there but not me. After 5th time in hospital doctor told me about my heart condition and it was critical. All that happend because of energy drinks? Propably. 2 years after that and i can't touch anything that contains caffeine. Why i write this here? Coz i know some people that drinks a lot of this stuff will show up here. I started feeling better, until eventually it went from drinking a cup of homemade coffee every morning, to a can of triple-shot Starbucks (220mg of caffeine) every day. Again, it started making me feel shitty throughout the day, and I was having trouble sleeping, so stopped drinking those regularly too. Im sure whatever they put in these energy drinks isn't good for you, but I think in general drinking high volume of caffeine everyday is unhealthy regardless of the source. I was in high school during the 2000s, almost everyone I knew at the time drank all sorts of energy drinks. I was given one and felt weird after drinking it then stayed away from energy drinks in general. At my job in the early 2010s we were given small baby ones, I had one sense it was from a different brand and the same result happened. Haven't had an energy drink since, I don't even drink coffee ether I just drink water with some fruit on the side in the morning if I have time.

Years later I gave it another go and I actually liked it but it was still extremely sweet. I really like Monster Ultras though. They taste so good and honestly you'd think they have sugar as they are so full of flavor, but they don't. Makes me wonder what is it in that makes it so good as most sugar free energy drinks have a weird bitter side taste which I hate. It's funny that the same people who guzzle soda all day will lecture you about how "unhealthy" energy drinks are. Energy drinks have a lighter carbonation that is more enjoyable to drink, have a better flavor complexity than soda, and many brands like Bang, make clear drinks that won't stain your teeth like coffee or Coke and zero sugar drinks that taste every bit as good as the sugar laden versions. For me, the caffeine isn't even a huge factor as it doesn't affect me much anyway, I just love the overall taste.

    You should have uploaded this on 9/11 --- the reason the drink is called Monster is because the rival country of Italy in the Axis Powers, rival to South Africa in the goal of overthrowing America's Jews, would regularly, in the genocide of Serbians (called Mexicans during the separation of districts by Mousollini) would ultimately count the amount of left-handed "monsters" regarded as such by their infiltrating capabilities and practices of the homeland and they would be systematically expelled from the government--- South Africa and Germany had very similar viewpoints on how to use infiltrators especially in regard to the concentrations of money printers whom very robotically could create the proper dyes to send to neighboring Austria out of Ginseng and Ginko Biloboa, where it would also be counted by royals exclusively and divided to the neighboring countries for the purposes of tracking the migrations of Polish, Syrians, and Chinese. It wasn't until after Red Bull became regularly traded among Japanese as Chinese products that Koreans would engage the past times of the 20's, yes, the 20's, like when Charlie Chaplin got his start jumping from windows and dodging bullet trains... the work done by people to decide whether and what a left-handed person would mean to drink one of these violently named drinks, like Bang, Venom, Red Bull, Buku, Game Fuel, Joker, Redline, they're all offensively named and should be taken off shelves without regard to the cost... because of how much damage they pose to foreign insurgents, such as the Mexicans. It measures the demand that is carried out by merchants with stakes in zero population growth. And how they place the stock in zero population growth? They restrain their shoppers in $3 incrementals and pose the risks of consumption as the FDA will probably never approve supplements as anything but an additive to the conspiracy against the monstrous people from foreign countries. And that's what goes on in the minds of grocers when you buy them at the store. In the delivery world, it becomes applied to consumer command less than grocer supply. As gifts, anyone supplying such a thought-provoking substance would be regarded with the type of Valor only a Monster could elucidate. Energy Drinks have been around as long as civilization, and conjoining the mind control conspiracy of domestic merchants would be one of the least criminal things a person like Mousollini or Stalin could ever imagine in the present day--- but there's definite thought-provoking ingredients in these knockoff brands that exist wellover Europe: Monster had a Kommando flavor for a long time, which was called Aasault and tasted like RC Cola mixed with a weighted sugar, so a little less like RC but maybe like Dr. Thunder or Venom company's Pibb audition. I'd like to one day drink the soda that levels activity of the frontal cortex by injecting literal horse paste into the lower spinal cord, and then sue a failing hospital in a poverty zone like Houston's 5th Ward for applying a science beyond the expectations of a third-world country in Africa, like using expiring ketamine knockoffs to study whether a left-handed person has a general knowledge of how ostracized minorities drinking Monster work for hours at a time without having their nerves damaged by the hazardous material our grocers use to clean waste, viruses, nightly and between the hours of 11 and 6 most major chains. It takes this long to sterilize a whole object not receiving the coverage of a shopper's vantage, really eyed by the professional shoppers we trust to carry our groceries to the vulnerable homebodies with felony convictions, no daily ID requirement, the absolute suffering inflicted on our vulnerable students by left-handed people who barely make it through high school with extensive brain injuries from the traumatic #2 supply-chain and controlled demolitions of the treasury and FBI in tandem with the elites. I'm dead ass serious.

    I've never really felt affected by energy drinks, like I remember everyone trying some at a friend's birthday in like 6th grade or something like it was weed someone had gotten a hold of, and everyone else were getting all jittery and shit (at least they _said_ they did) but I honestly didn't really feel much of anything. I did enjoy the flavour though (though I believe I'd tried energy drinks before then, as one of my brothers had some small Battery cans that he shared with my dad, and I got to have one as well, though I didn't know that it was energy drink at the time, nor what an energy drink even was, I just knew it was a fancy soda that I wasn't really supposed to be drinking). Never been one of those who _has_ to have a cup of coffee in the morning either. I like coffee, quite a bit, but I'll only brew myself a cup if I feel like it, never been something I've craved or "needed" (though whenever I'm at my brother's place I'll take a cup of coffee after breakfast, and over at my aunt and uncle's farm where there's constantly a pot full of it on the table I will drink a few cups a day). Unless chocolate milk counts (Cocio for the win, btw), which I'd buy like every day in 8th grade when we'd moved to a new school that had a (rather small) cafeteria (that didn't have Cocio, but still, it was a freakin' cafeteria at our school!), I've never really been addicted to stuff like that, unlike my friends who'd always get iced teas before and after school, or energy drinks before and after school (though I did have fried eggs, kidney beans, sausages and chocolate milk for breakfast like every single day, and have had a lot of iced tea during my time), but I've also been weary of getting addicted, and generally do my best not to drink energy drinks too late or right before bed.
    There was a period when my friend(s) would stay at my place every single weekend, and my mom would buy each of us a can of our favourite energy drink (Burn Day, may it rest in peace) and chocolate bar (Melkedrøm, which translates to "Milk Dream", the best damn chocolate there ever was...), which were some good-ass times... With the exception of those weekends I've really only drunk energy drinks if me and my friends are having a LAN party (and even then I never drink more than one can a day at most). I like it, 'cause I _do_ like the taste, but I also like making our LANs special by being the one time (typically) that I indulge in the drinks of energy. I do wish more energy drinks came in smaller cans, 'cause in general I'm a fan of lesser portions that you can choose to take seconds of rather than larger portions that may be more than you needed in the first place. I also wish more of the people focusing on how bad energy drinks are would consider a scenario like mine when deciding how good or bad it is for you, someone who'll consume perhaps one energy drink a day for a week three or four times a year.
    P.S. Sorry if my comment's a bit rambly, felt like it became ramblier and ramblier (which I don't think is a word), but it's rather late over here and I'm too tired to keep editing, so I hope it is at the very least legible and makes at least a little bit of sense.
    Edit: Erased a stray word.

    Thanks for your report! Very informative. Ever since I was a little kid, my favorite soda has been Mountain Dew, which has the most caffeine in the soda category. When I first noticed Red Bull, around the late 90’s, I was unimpressed. It tasted nasty, the can was tiny, and it was twice as expensive. But I live in an area that energy drink companies used to test market their new, experimental products in. That’s when I discovered the original formula Venom energy drink. Nowadays, Venom comes in huge cans and several flavors, none of which taste like the original formula. Originally, Venom came in the same tiny can size as Red Bull, was just as expensive, and there was only one flavor, which is hard to describe. Basically, it tasted like sweetened grapefruit juice (which it probably was), but it had a weird, “minty” aftertaste. I loved it, and the caffeine content easily matched Mountain Dew. Well, I was hooked, but Venom disappeared, I guess while they collated their test results, or something. Although I still prefer Mountain Dew when it comes to soda, I needed a new energy drink for that lovely caffeine fix. Since nothing else was quite like the old Venom, however, for me it became a matter of whatever energy drink I could get the largest size for the best price, as long as the caffeine and sugar content was full strength. Which puts Red Bull pretty low on my list because those tiny cans are still overpriced, and it still tastes awful, although taste is not as important to me as caffeine and sugar content. I was overjoyed, at first, when Venom came back, but to my disappointment, none of the new flavors was as delightfully weird as I remember the original being. But it comes in nice, big cans now and it’s relatively reasonably priced, so I still buy it frequently. But another drink called “Full Throttle” tends to have the best bang for my buck, so that’s what I usually get, when it’s available. I like Monster and Rockstar, they’re just kind of expensive. Even my old favorite, Mountain Dew has gotten in on the action with their own energy drink called Kickstarter or something, but surprisingly, the caffeine count is low. For an energy drink. Even regular Mountain Dew is still high caffeine for a soda.
