How To Use GPS On The Wouxun KG-Q10G GMRS & KG-Q10H Ham Radios - Transmitting GPS over GMRS and Ham

The Wouxun KG-Q10H ham radio and the KG-Q10G GMRS radios can both transmit and receive GPS data over GMRS and ham frequencies, but out of the box receiving GPS data and sending GPS coordinates and data are disabled. So in this video I explain step-by-step how to send GPS coordinates and data over GMRS if you are using the KG-Q10G and how to send GPS data over ham radio frequencies if you are using the KG-Q10H ham radio version.
I even made special trip off-roading in the desert of Southern California just so I could demonstrate how these Wouxun GMRS and ham radios send GPS data.

Very nice review, but……as…a…HAM radio licensed operator for a total of ……0.3 years. Having memorized 35 questions and got 29 right when I took the test makes me highly qualified to give my highly opinionated opinion.
I have managed to watch …every…radio recording you have made and by doing so also makes me a qualified gmrs radio opinionator.
And my opinion is, I cannot decide which gmrs radio to buy for the SHTF because you make all of them so desirable.
So keep doing reviews, ….eventually I will Osborne enough information by watching your hand movements to make a decision, ( but I will have to run it by the wife first).
This is getting a little long, so I will not bore you with things about me being in Florida or how the trees here suck the radio signals like damn living ground sponges.

The best GMRS radio for SHTF is a non type accepted radio IMO. Either a MARS modded amateur radio for receiving and transmitting on the off bands, OR... a commercial DMR that can support encryption directly.

Excellent as usual!!! I personally think this radio is great, but... the cost of entry is a bit high. I think my people will not spend the $ just for the GPS features. A KG-S88G or a BTECH GMRS-PRO is much more likely. Great video!

These look like good radios to have. GPS location data is a good thing to have if you're in 'I'm totally lost in the boonies mode' where SAR can get to you. Bad side, in SHTF mode, GPS data needs to be disabled if you want to stay under the radar.

Great video!! But 1 correction.. the radio will in fact send your location on its own.. if you have set it to 1-10 min in the "send frequency" menu

This feature almost triggered my aforementioned auto-buy reflex too. But the many many dozens of dollars each cost scared me away. And needing 2 of them at that.
I'm negotiating with friends to foot the cost of second radios.

You basically have two options. Find strangers on the radio and see if they can become friends or try to get your friends to get a radio. Line anything important, you build up a community over time. Don't expect anything to happen in a day or even a week.

Have you tested a quansheng uv5r plus or uv58k, uv5k6 yet. Very nice well made radio's that can be modified to receive from 18mhz to 1300mhz.

I have (3) two of the KG-Q10H's that are "MARS" modded and (4) one KG-Q10G. And I can and will verify that they do in fact talk to each others GPS very well. The GMRS version also receives on the National 2 Meter Calling frequency of 146.52 as one would expect it to. BUT unless you have a device that you can input the coordinates into the map is useless as it has no compass. So get yourself a paper map with the coordinates if you will be beating the bad bush off grid!
And I don't care if you blink or not!
So as I've already mentioned bypass the "G" Spot and go straight for the "H"!! - MARS mod it, hold down 2, turn it on, enter 1445.
So Wouxun! When will you provide a downloadable map? Hmmm!

I wanna see the jeep videos while using the radios.
YMMV and all, but I find radios distracting on the trail. I'd rather have a GOOD spotter giving me hand signals. No confusion that way and no delay. But definitely more Jeep videos.

A critical question! If the Radio ID is set for EOT does it count as a "roger beep"? Does it enhance the roger beep? Ruin the roger beep?

Did they both come with the antenna off them or on them, people need to know what they will be getting.
Data GMRS radios should be fixed.
This would be a nice feature if my whole family could each have one of these radios. Then when we go to the zoo or something, I could find my kids when they run off. Also might come in handy if they were heaven forbid, kidnapped or something. Though a small tracker they could wear on a necklace or something might be better. I also like the IP67 rating as well. I have the UV9GX, based off of Randy's review, which I love by the way. It lacks the GPS and higher IP rating. It is nice though. I now wish I had waited. LOL. That's OK. There's always going to be something better.
Can you do a video on DTMF codes?
"Some people" seem to think that the FCC can shut down our Boof-wang radios using DTMF code.

I tried doing a sms on channel 15 to radio 69420. Got no answer. It needs 446.00 the calling channel. So I can send some tones for inclusivity

Why the hell do these companies all seem to use a proprietary location system rather than aprs and why the hell cant they make it usable over a repeater....grrrrr. 😢

Is this considered using a digital mode on gmrs? I thought that was prohibited?
No.
The FCC thinks that sending your gps location over gmrs is a good safety feature so they made a special rule allowing gps data bursts. No other kind of digital mode is allowed.
Here are the FCC rules on the matter:
§ 95.1787 GMRS additional requirements.
(a) Digital data transmissions. GMRS hand-held portable units that have the capability to transmit digital data must be designed to meet the following requirements.
(1) Digital data transmissions may contain location information, or requesting location information from one or more other GMRS or FRS units, or containing a brief text message to another specific GMRS or FRS unit. Digital data transmissions may be initiated by a manual action of the operator or on an automatic or periodic basis, and a GMRS unit receiving an interrogation request may automatically respond with its location.
(2) Digital data transmissions must not exceed one second in duration.
(3) Digital data transmissions must not be sent more frequently than one digital data transmission within a thirty-second period, except that a GMRS unit may automatically respond to more than one interrogation request received within a thirty-second period.
(4) The antenna must be a non-removable integral part of the GMRS unit.
(5) GMRS units must not be capable of transmitting digital data on the 467 MHz main channels.
HELP Please Fine Sir. GPS?? Called Buy Two Way Radios and talked to Tanner about way the GPS display wasn't showing up. he said need to connect to the Satallite. Asked if it would do it inside and he said he doubt it. So stood outside for 20 mins and still didn't connect. went back over all settings 44 Location -01 GPS (on) 02 Send Freg (on) 03 GPS REC (on) have Radio ID set have PPT ID 33 BOT. even set Ch 03 menu 18 SEND-LOC to (on)? What did I miss?
i dont know what you've missed but the radio needs a clear view of the southern sky to be able to pick up the satellites. so make sure you are in the open, and maybe leave the radio out a little longer or try from a different location.
Yeah So don't get lost in the woods just Desert LOL. Took them for a Drive and Parked in a clear area and one connected and one did not reach out ? But was strange is the one that did not connect showed the Radio ID of the one that did? Don't know that I would have put out many $$ knowing GPS only work in Perfect conditions. @thenotrubicon
My GMRS flavor UV5R doesnt transmit, and beeps only, when I switch it to frequency mode. Lock is off. Why cant I transmit on it even if its on GMRS frequencies while in frequency mode? Duplex is set to (None)
I am struggling to understand what this has to do with transmitting GPS data on a KG-Q10G radio, which is what we are all talking about here.

Really. Not compatible with the GMRS-Pro? Lame. Seems like both companies are missing an opportunity to get some cross-over customers. When I bought a GMRS Pro a while back I was hoping that the positioning system was going to be on a standard.

Not sure how useful this function is, especially given that they only work with the right radio. Maybe if I had kids out in the country….dunno.
1. Read owners manual 3-4 times, confirm with device that you understand the material.
2. Make condescending humorous instructional video showing the same thing any other owner ought to be able to figure out by reading the manual.
