Not sure if promoting the use of Channel 16 as a GMRS chatter channel is a particulary great idea. In Marine radio it is the worldwide distress channel: Yes GMRS is a different service, but this smells like a bad habit to adopt when there are other options.
I guess if when you are on your boat and using a marine radio you get confused and think you are off-road, using a GMRS radio, this could be a problem. I know that happens to me all the time because of how similar being on a boat is to being in a 4WD vehicle..
Marine channel 16 is also the calling/hailing channel. So I don’t see much difference there. You make a contact on 16 and then you take you conversation to another channel.
I went from finding your content incredibly cringy, rolling my eyes whenever I saw one of your videos, to laughing my ass off and seeking them out. Well done. Well done. -A formerly sad ham.

His deadpan look and presentation is hilarious 😂. Very informative without all the narcissism from the Sad Ham crowd. They are still fussing about the " no code" technician.
That was definitely scientific. Got my gmrs license last week, got a pair of gmrs radios on the way. Your videos are great! Gmrs is much easier than trying to have my wife get a ham license.
The best radio you can ever get is the one you decide on buying for yourself. People always have opinion but I have found over the years people that have opinion are awful generous with someone else's money. Your videos are always spot on man.
For chatter between vehicles in a trail convoy, the case could be made to use the low power (5 watts max) simplex channels 1-7. This would keep the high power (up to 50 watts) channels 15-22 free for longer distance simplex or repeater use.
I agree and want to add that using higher power, in close proximity to others, could damage the radios. Depending on the quality of the radio(s), the RF can damage the receive circuitry.
Nice my families radios are set to 16 , don’t remember how I landed on 16 as our family emergency channel , but nice to have a back up on that. I remember when there were CB clubs, yeah I’m that old
I missed the polls! Great video by the way. I use all three types. Had my dads CB he had in his truck from the 70s, so put it up and use it once in a while. Have HAM radios too and probably work that more often and now GMRS. I don’t know anyone local that has GMRS so it’s pretty dead really. It’s fun to have all three. I mostly got GMRS as my family doesn’t need to get a HAM license.
Same here! I have both, ham and gmrs licenses, i bought gmras radios for all the family, we have gmrs repeater near but hardly you can hear someone there. At least it give me the peace of mind if something happens we have another way to communicate.

It would be nice if there was still a recognized calling frequency or Channel where people can connect than pair off for more private conversations very useful and crowded areas.
Randy, you're a genius. I was blind, but now I see the light. This video is indisputable evidence that channel 16 is the best channel to use for GMRS. Unless you're using a UV-5r, as that would be violating FCC guidelines and result in a strongly worded letter.
I hooked up my new gmrs radio and set it to scan with the squelch on lowest setting and have yet to hear anyone talk. Our house is on a hill so line of sight reaches for miles. Bought a couple of HTs for my son and I to communicate while riding motorcycle but don't have the proper headsets yet. Guess we should be happy that the airwaves aren't crowded.
Ammron has said that certain channels are for "preppers". As for other "platforms" (cb, frs, gmrs, etc...) as well. My mag [mutual asst. group] uses gmrs, frs & cb for our back up comms.
Great video... I was looking for one of those Wouxun GMRS radios and couldn’t find them. Everyone was sold out. So I picked up a KG UV9D Plus... already had a non plus version... they make really good radios, I like the quality. Heck, I am sitting on my couch now and hitting the repeater and taking to people all across the country.
Channels 8-14 are reserved by the rules for handheld radios, thus mobile and base radios do not transmit on these channels. Narrowband FM may be received on an FM receiver, albeit at a lower volume. FM may sound overmodulated on a NBFM receiver. Note that GMRS power is limited to 50W TPO (Transmitter Power Output) on 15-22 and the repeater inputs, 5W ERP (Effective Radiated Power) on 1-7 and 0.5W ERP on 8-14. So in theory you should include feedline loss and antenna gain in calculating power on 1-14. Ham rules are just as confusing with a 1500W PEP TPO limits on most bands but 100W PEP ERP on 60 meters. In practice most hams use a 100W transceiver on 60 and GMRS uses 5 watt radios on 1-7 and assume insignificant antenna gain.
Thank you so much for leaving the typical " _I am so smart I am going to show everyone by answering questions that nobody asked_ " type of comment that most normal, socially-adjusted people hate. Yes, when using the KG-805G, you are required to announce your callsign at the end of your transmission and/or every 15 minutes if in a long conversation.

Marine band 16 is a vhf calling channel. Boaters with marine vhf radios are required to monitor ch 16. I think 16 makes perfect sense as the go to channel for gmrs. Boaters, who favor many other outdoor activities like 4x4, might naturally choose gmrs 16 as a contact channel or emergency channel.... however, in the boating world once a contact is made, unless the discourse is brief, the users are encouraged to move to another channel to continue their chat. That's good information in 15 paragraphs or less... did I win a gmrs radio, or perhaps the pin of shame.

I could be wrong, but ch 19 and 16 are input frequencies for repeters, not a good choice for a road channel. In my area, North central Texas, there are several repeters that use 16 and 19 as inputs, lots of simplex traffic on them hittinh the repeters. we need a good high power simplex channel to use as a road channel.

Anywho... thank you for all of the great content and the laughs. Hope to run in to you out in the trail some day. Be well and stay safe.
You are partially correct If you buy a regular UV-5R, no, it is a ham radio. If you buy a UV-5R "GMRS", then yes, it is a GMRS radio and approved by the FCC for GMRS use.
GMRS all the things! Love the videos about GMRS I recently got on the Santiago repeater and will be getting a mobile unit soon. Thanks for all the information.
They really need to! Additionally, they need to keep manufacturers from selling blister pack Wal-Mart radios capable of transmitting on the formerly licensed-only frequencies like 15-22. Doing that was high stupidity on the FCC's part, IMHO.
That's amazing - your "science" sounds an awful lot like the crap we hear coming out of DC. So a GRMS radio at 1/2 a Watt still has the external antenna advantage? That still seems very advantageous even if you relegated to low power. Have any tests been done regarding this?
Question: if I decide to run a CB SSB with a 200 watt linear amplifier on channel 16 and I'm close to someone running GMRS on channel 16, won't he still hear me? That is if we're not in the woods and a tree doesn't fall on him?

Maiinly GMRS repeaters are FCC part 90 accepted, but I have not heard the FCC cracking down for equipment other baofens not beening FCC Part 95E accepted. I use to use a Motorola MAXTRAC and HT 1000 for GMRS. Now I use Connect Systems CS 800D MOBILE and CS 700 Handheld, which are FCC Part 90 accepted. I don't care as long as I am considerate and courtious
No one is coming to inspect your radio, use whatever you want lol, responsibly
Your videos are helping plan a Neighborhood Radio Watch. Thanks for everything. Retevis vs. Wouxon? After watching your reviews, that's my next venture as you seem equal on both.
Funny and very informative for GMRS beginners like me. Thanks!
Loving these videos and and your ever present and "subtle" frustration with all those with whom you find yourself somewhat forced to interact with. The price for a public presence I suppose. Anywho... thank you for all of the great content and the laughs. Hope to run in to you out in the trail some day. Be well and stay safe.
Hilarious guy! You would be a credit to ham radio. Have Mariam and Ginger, have GMRS and Ham License. Wont take long to do training for general class
Well,, you can’t argue with science! Informational and entertaining! Thanks Randy!
Thanks! KRUF868
Thank you!
Just cross checking today -- June 2024 -- I believe the newer UG-5Rs are now legal for GMRS by FCC -- yes?
You are partially correct
If you buy a regular UV-5R, no, it is a ham radio.
If you buy a UV-5R "GMRS", then yes, it is a GMRS radio and approved by the FCC for GMRS use.
I have heard that the calling channel for Jeeps on CB is 4... as in 4x4 or 4WD.
That math does not add up..
GMRS all the things! Love the videos about GMRS I recently got on the Santiago repeater and will be getting a mobile unit soon. Thanks for all the information.
so what channel do i use when driving my 6x6 ? :D
Those of you who can afford to purchase a 6x6 usually talk on satellite radio. :)
6x6=36
3x6=18
So 18
Prolly have to get a Midland radio (ugh!) and put it on Channel 36.
As GMRS gets more popular, I hope the FCC expands the channels out to 40... Just like they did to CB back in the 70s from 23 to 40 channels..
It was many times more popular decades ago.
They really need to! Additionally, they need to keep manufacturers from selling blister pack Wal-Mart radios capable of transmitting on the formerly licensed-only frequencies like 15-22. Doing that was high stupidity on the FCC's part, IMHO.
Can't argue with the science!!!! The government so!!! Love your posts!
That's amazing - your "science" sounds an awful lot like the crap we hear coming out of DC. It must be absolutely accurate, without any misinformation, unquestionable, and requires no thought or powers of reason. Wow, I am amazed.....( if you pin this one, you didn't get the joke :) ) You called it though, there will always be some rummy that will produce a comment worthy of the "Pinned" award. Jimmy H stepped right into it in this episode.
Mercy sakes this here's the" Rubber Duck" and I love your videos 10-4.
I had no idea different channels had different power output. Going to 16 now!
If I tape a Baofang Ar152 to my ar15 will the bullett fly straighter.
I had a hard time following all the science in this video. Using GMRS sounds so complicated.
I am gunna get a ham radio.
That’s a ten 4 or should I be saying what’s a 10 for ?
It's not complicated at all. You key the thing and talk . And wait, and wait ...and no one will answer. I have scanned the GRMS and FRS and heard two people talking, but not to each other! Dead as a door knob...
I don't know how I'm going to handle all this scientific data you keep on putting out! Feel like I'm back in school, gotta go get my pen n note pad for your vidjas!
love it , when r you going on a tour with your stand up show ? when ? 👍🏻 16
Love videos, as a Ham,and radio guy in general, thank you for the info and the laughs
That is if we're not in the woods and a tree doesn't fall on him?
if you roll-down your window and yell loud enough, he will hear you.. otherwise, no.
You have to have the pa speaker on.
