    Thumbs up for the effort! Came out really nice. As a professional I would suggest putting your sub under rear windshield, in a sedan like yours it gives the best sound, in a sealed box not free air of course. And protruding sub in trunk is an always matter of time of when this speaker will be damaged by a bag or something else carelessly thrown in a trunk, put a grill asap. Next time try to angle the sub in a trunk such way, that it don’t gets easily in a way of luggage and try making it not retract from the box it is in. An some inner cage would benefit on sound also, on higher volumes especially.
    Great work

    this is a realy nice build. it looks great and the trunk is still functional. however, I've heard people say that fibreglass is not good to make sub enclosures with because it flexes too much and screws up the sound of the woofer. but is this true? and if so, is there anything you can do to strengthen it? could you just make a wooden frame on the inside(if you reduce that from the airspace) or would that affect the sound as well?

    • @dalienware668
      @dalienware668 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is always going to be those guys that critique your work. I say it looks great, and as long as youve pounded that sub and your not hearing any rattling or unwanted noice from the speaker box, then you accomplished what you wanted and I'm sure even if it was under the airspace required, still sounds better than stock, and you have your entire trunk for storage still. Congrats I think it looks great, will that box fit a 9th gen accord?

      Considering it was just regular ole painters tape I am not sure the people that made this should have attempted this - Also a JLW7? That box will blow apart if it is ever fully powered. I don't know what kind of body filler they used but definitely should have had a lot more glass. Whatever works for them though... I would have gone about it a different way personally.

    • @Tomnician
      @Tomnician 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You missed the point(this IS the kind of tape you use, it's just people who don't know what painters tape is probably need not attempt a project like this)....and you also underestimate how strong fiberglass is...I've just one coat of fiberglass on my prototype and you couldn't PUNCH a hole in it. That would certainly make just ONE coat of fiberglass stronger then that of the speaker surround(Which would have to be stronger to blow apart the box.) As far as acoustics is concerned, well that is not what you were arguing for...the fact that the box is form fitted to the trunk surrounding(makes it much more durable), not to mention the fact that this is a sub in a TRUNK...all things considered that was more than enough fiberglass...

      I know this is old..but in case anyone else wondering, can always calculate the volume of odd shapes/places like this using packin peanut or somethin similar. fill the area in question, then make something like the graduated cylinder from science class but w/scrap cardboard boxes, make it real easy on yourself and do 1'*1'*X' where X= anything more than the volume could possibly be. just make sure not to pack the peanuts(or whatever media you use to calculate)denser in the space or measuring box so it's as similar space between,givin as accurate a measurement as possible. obviously this won't be exact but shapes like that part of the trunk you'd have to be a geometry wizard to figure out how to calculate. that or make the shape like they did, then see how much water it displaced in a large tote, but that would be much more time consuming and expensive for pretty similar results.

    Nice work, but I'm not a fan of leaving the subwoofer. Unprotected in the trunk of a vehicle. I understand that speaker grills are or can be ugly. Their job is not to be pretty. It's about the function of preventing damage. If it is a "Show" vehicle then no grills. But any other vehicles that are daily drivers should have grills. It's cheaper to buy a grill than to repair or replace a subwoofer! In my humble opinion.

      Since he is going with a sealed enclosure a small box is fine, if he needs a bit more "volume" (size, not loudness) he/she can stuff the sealed box with polyester stuffing (i like to use man made stuff with anti mold agent in case of changing climates, natural fibers like to host growing things). this alone will add up to a 30% increase in air volume; and a sealed box sounds better then a ported any day (i didn't say louder or boomier...just better)!

    what is the purpose of cutting the fiberglass cloth into such tiny squares? Wouldn't a few larger squares or longer strips do the exact same job? All I know about Fiberglass is that it is just like concrete- you pour concrete and you want to reinforce it with rebar. In Fiberglass work, you pour a resin and you reinforce it with the fiberglass matt. But it doesn't need to be cut into tiny squares as far as I know, all you have to do is have it cut into a shape that makes it easy to work with. Seems to me this is just creating unnecessary work. Yes, you need 4-5 layers for a strong sub. But hundreds of little overlapping squares is not going to be any stronger than 5 full layers of uncut material.

      I know I'm a few years later with this but...
      It's just Fiber Glass Matting with Resin + Hardener
      Then Bondo and rubbed down...
      Just thought I'd reply even though you probably made this and sold the car by now...
