I was assigned to VT22, NAS Kingsville TX, in 1967-68 as an Aircrew Survival Equipment man (PR). Got to take a backseat ride in an TF9J. Best assignment I ever had.

this is one of the few aircraft that has no ailerons, at 1:38 the crease you see on the back of the wing is just the dividing line between the flaps and the rest of the wing, it uses spoilers for roll control by dumping lift on either wing like the B-52, but the B-52 uses both spoilers and ailerons.

***** flaperons controls roll with differential flaps, the F9F controls roll with differential spoilers. it can be seen at 1:38 slightly raised :)

This is the Navy's second swept wing jet fighter. The F7U Cutlass was the first.

My 1st carqual was in this aircraft back in ‘61 with VT-21, NAS Kingsville, prior to getting my Wings of Gold and commission after 17 mos as a MarCad. Also instructed in the TF-9J at MCAS Cherry Point ‘67-‘68. A good solid aircraft though a bit underpowered.

They were also used in VT-21 and VT-23 training squadrons in the mid 1960's.
There was a two seat tandem F-9F T model.

Fresh out of "A" school Memphis (Millington) and straight into VT-26 Power Plants then Check Crew '68-'71.
I started out in Power Plants changing (2) Fuel Filters on the TF9J on the "Line", crawling head first down the pilot side intake, and crawling back out ass first. Later worked nights, mostly turning birds down at the "Blast Shield" sometimes with NO tail, and NO seats, nose down and wings up. Tow tractor, NC5 and our shop's Van. I still have my "turn up" check list card.

Kingsville, Texas had F-9's until April 1969 when A-4 Skyhawks replaced the F-9's. Kingsville had VT-21, 22, & 23. If I remember right, Beeville, Texas had three squadrons up there.(VT-24, 25, & 26)
These old F-9's were tough. One time the pilots(instructor & student) ejected out of one of VT-22's planes. They were OK but they couldn't find the plane. It had relighted and had bellied-in in the sagebrush. A helo flew it back, a plane captain jump on, hit the aux hyd pump &ran the gear down!

Amazing it's only 12 feet tall. It's so beautiful no wonder they preferred to use it for reconnaissance.

Disregard my last comment about the wing....I was looking at incorrect information. Beyond that, both airframes were pretty badass looking...certainly the Cougar looked frightening to anyone facing it when it was first operational.

The RCN should have bought the Cougar when their McDonnell Banshees we’re retired from HMCS Bonaventure in 1962.

The Cougar would have done well against the Mig 15.

About the swept wings, they are better at high speeds, but straight wings have better low speed performance.

The Panther wasnt a straight winged plane as the narrator said. The Cougar was just a larger area wing design, but they were both swept wing.

U got it wrong their had straight wings because of the take off with early jet engine on a carrier it was too bad and they needed the straight wings for lift, but in 1955 -1960 the jet engine good better and so was born the Cougar.
Pleace get next time that right!!!
