Glad you liked it Shane. I went to the distillery back in December and I had a fantastic time. The team is super passionate about what they do and are incredibly friendly. It was also great to see a proper working distillery where I actually witnessed one of the team members adding vegan butter in to the washback to calm down an overzealous batch of yeast :) Their new make is tasty as well and you get a bit more peat in there but it's only about 5ppm reflected in the bottle so like you said adds a nice spice. I tried their Oversmoke and Virgin Oak versions and they're both much better than the small batch so I highly recommend you give them a try as well. Also White Peak has a special place for me as it was the first time someone recognised me from TH-cam, I felt like a rockstar 😂

They're certainly doing great things at White Peaks 👍 and you know you've made it when you get recognised out in the real world 😉 congrats my friend 🥃

Great review. Speaking of new distilleries - i’m looking forward to the new releases from the Isle of Harris distillery in September. They started in march 2016 so will be a lot more mature than a lot of inaugural releases. The gin is superb so have high hopes….

Good point on Isle of Harris. I'm looking forward to that too.
I always get that one mixed up with the nearby Abhainn Dearg... which is unfortunate because the Abhainn Dearg I've tried was... not good 😂 hopefully they're still going though and a few more years may improve their... characterful... spirit.

The cork on mine was knackered and left a load of residue and crap on the inside of the neck of the bottle. The juice is decent though, been enjoying everything I've tried from White Peak.

Not good! Maybe it's time Scotch took a hint from the rum world and gave plastic corks a try. Very good contents from White Peaks though 👍

Shane, great review. I haven't had much English whisky. A couple samples of Bimber. I have an open bottle of Filey Bay Flagship I'm enjoying and a bottle of the Filey Bay STR finish that I haven't opened yet. If I remember correctly you are not a fan of STR casks, are you? seems to me either people really like STR or don't, there doesn't seem to much middle ground.

Filey Bay Flagship is a lovely whisky. I love sharp and juicy drams and it really fits the bill. Review coming soon!
No I'm not a fan of STR. Just my opinion but I find STR very heavy handed. It just seems to take over the whole experience. The only STR whisky that I've really enjoyed was Kingsbarns Dream to Dram. I didn't really notice the STR influence on that one and I enjoyed it a lot. Cheers 🥃

You should definitywnie try something of Ararat brandy range. Decent malternative IMO. Greetings from Poland!🎉

Is it same whisky you've been trying at blinds in Roy's Vpub a while ago? Hard to believe there is no any sherry in it when you look on the bottle but must be so tasty? Half a bottle already done 😁. Thank you for this craicking review give us another spoon of information about new promising distillery 👍. Keep on eye on this one. Can you leave wee comment about your appearance in Vpub. Anything surprised you or get excited? Is this old HP was really good?. Cheers 👍😁🥂

Hi Peatbull! Same distillery but different expression. The one I reviewed here is their standard offering. The one on the vPub (red dram) was a special cask strength one. You can tell it's the same house style though. They both have the same wonderful light, farmy peat and I'm pleased to have chosen the White Peaks whisky as my second favourite on the vPub. It's good stuff!
Comment about the vPub? Well! Seeing as you asked here goes! 😂 Firstly I'm still kicking myself for identifying the new Scotch distillery and new English distillery the wrong way around. It was pretty obvious to me that the red and yellow were the younger spirits in the lineup but what threw me is that I suspected the Cask Strength Lochlea was a Cask Strength Cotswolds whisky. From a bourbon cask, those distilleries are producing a very similar style and I love them both. So while I was almost right on both, I didn't get any points from that pair 😣 but there you go! I actually ended up guessing at least a couple of the others because I just ran out of time. I'm not good at having to do things like that in such a short time. It's still a great experience to be on the vPub though. It's an icon of WhiskyTube and a privilege 👍
That Highland Park! I believe Roy said it was from around early 2000s? It was very good. Significantly better than the current version. I've always loved Highland Park and I think it's a real shame that they don't give us more well presented whisky. In my opinion though you need to go back a bit further to the 90s and 80s to get the really jaw droppingly good Highland Park 12. I reviewed a miniature of a 1980s HP12 on my channel a while ago and it's ridiculously good. You can really taste that they were dumping VERY good casks of very old whisky into their standard bottlings back then because there was no market for premium Scotch at the time.
I quite enjoyed the Glenglassaugh too. Probably more so than most of the other tasters. It's a characterful little dram with some nice complexity and varied flavours. My only criticism would be that the ABV holds it back a little. Which is why I ranked the Glenglassaugh and HP12 below the two Cask Strength whiskies.
The only dram on that vPub that I didn't like much was the Turn Table Purple Haze blend. I thought it had some interesting sherry notes but seemed really underpowered. Like you could tell it has good whisky in it but it's not able to fully express itself. Perhaps partly because it's a blend. But either way I found it too weak for me.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one, Shane.
Have yet to try a Wire Works expression...which add to the curiosity of course.

I think it's an interesting one. Good to see another English whisky with a bit of peat and a very promising first effort 👍 hope it makes it's way to you soon 🥃

Where’d you get that laphroaig mug? I need one of those

    • @WhiskyLock
      @WhiskyLock  ปีที่แล้ว

I got it from the distillery shop about ten years ago. If you can't find them on the Laphroaig website then maybe try eBay.
Fun fact; When Duncan McGillivray still worked at Bruichladdich, Mary MacGreggor (shop manager) used to make Duncan's coffee in one of those Laphroaig mugs to wind him up 😂
