Michael Keaton's character was a writer, not an NHL player. He was a fan who ran out onto the ice in a fit a rage during a game, hence his being committed.

There were some bittersweet moments. One is when they throw Christopher Lloyd out of the bar and he says “will someone please take me back to my room.” Also, when he gets the drawings from the little girl, he has a moment that he knows he isn’t a doctor and wishes he could be in society.

Christopher Lloyd was in this movie with Michael Keaton. He was in Cuckoo's Nest with Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito. I like to imagine that his character in both movies is the same, and some of his fellow patients made such a big impression on him that they formed the basis for his next delusion. Tim Burton's Batman movies all took place in his head.

Crazy People was a box office bomb with Dudley Moore in one of his last roles before his death in
2002 for Lions Gate Films. After his successful family film was
My Bodyguard for Paramount Pictures from 1980 as director,
Tony Bill has the slightest idea that he didn’t want to direct and
felt it wasn’t the right thing to do,
instead he let go and move forward with Sony Pictures’
Untamed Heart for 1993 which was his best directing effort since
his debut with Paramount Pictures’ My Bodyguard-
      13 years later.

It's funny, because I was actually introduced to this movie via my parents' occupations. My mother is an occupational therapist and my father a psychologist, so the subject matter of mental illness caught their attention in the late 90s and they were surprised to find the movie (fairly) accurate to different mental neurosis. My mother actually used it when she became a college professor to demonstrate to her students the different variances in mental illness, as she always found it to be a good introduction to these ideas for the uninitiated. While it obviously isn't 100% accurate to these disorders and there's a lot of comedic exaggeration, it doesn't make the men's disorders the butt of the joke (the sheer indifference and/or outright mistrust the rest of New York gives them is honestly more critiqued) and makes it clear that they're only *slightly* better by the end. They've still got a long way to go with their treatment, but they at least are on the right track. All in all, a fun movie that definitely deserves more attention.

    • @Boonehams

I always saw Albert as a nonverbal autistic who has echolalia. The only thing he says are things he heard on TV; sometimes it's related to the situation at hand or sometimes it's immediate. I don't know how accurate that diagnosis is, but he's the only one whose diagnosis isn't stated in the film other than the doctors saying he's been at the sanitarium the longest out of everyone in the group.

I kind of forgot about this one. It had heart and a good message of trying to work with people you don't see eye to eye with. I loved that "arise and walk my son" part. I think it was in the trailer.

Oh! Thank! And thank you a thousand times! I thought I was alone in my "Dream Team " fandom. I watch it every six months or so, or more often if I forget to be human. I am now sending this recommendation to a pastor with a link, because no one has ever told the essence of this masterpiece in such a professional way. Yes, maybe today our consciousness is ripe for this film when we've been through a pandemic, a year-long travel shutdown, confinement and release, we're ready to take on this work today when there's never been so much mental problems from children to the elderly as today. I can laugh and cry at the movie and benefit from it after each viewing. The movie got bad reviews at the time but that's why it was ahead of its time. Thanks again!

I saw this in the theater by myself at nine years old. This was one of those late 80’s comedies that they were making a half a dozen or more a year of. This and The Burbs were my favorite comedies that year. Can’t believe this was the same year as Batman & BTTF2!!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I had totally forgotten about this movie but, as the scenes rolled I started to remember, especially Peter Boyle's sermon in the church.
An aside for fans of 70's CTV shows, many of the second bananas were regulars on "The Party Game" which was a televised version of charades with a cast of standup comedians.

It's tragic more people aren't aware of this little movie. I was 12 when it came out and loved it as a kid, I was a big fan of pre-Batman Michael Keaton from films like Mr. Mom, Beetlejuice, and Gung-Ho as well as a Christopher Lloyd fan, what 80s kid didn't love Back to the Future. For me, I have always had this movie, it's in my collection right now, and I watch it maybe once every year to year and a half. It may not be perfect, but I always liked it as a simple 80s comedy.

My dad saw this when it came out and it was always one of his favorite comedies. So he showed it to me many times and it’s become a big part of our sense of humor.

“If I only saved one soul in there it was well worth it!”

I saw this film in a theater in 1989 - my favorite part was Michael Keaton playing on the other patients' fears as they wait in the van after dark - he references "Wolfen" and mentions something like "Yeah, that happened right around here, I heard." Then he starts making werewolf howl-sounds under his breath. This video was a great examination of a very fun film.
