Great card and photo Rick! Love the image of Mays! The ruth is super cool, a French card depicting an American athlete while playing in Japan. Very worldly... I've never seen that card, so super cool to learn about a Ruth card. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year, my friend!

    Hey Rick!
Mantle did the show circuit from the late 70s into the 90s. I bet he signed almost every day during that era and I’m sure a lot of cards were signed then.
That Mays photo is awesome. PSA will fix a mislabel free of charge, I just had one done and it only took 2 weeks
Congrats on picking up that awesome Ruth card from the Japanese tour! That is so cool and looks beautiful!

You make some excellent points on the autos and alteration issues, Rick. When I was collecting in the early '80's, I bought a 55-card set called Big League Collectibles Diamond Classics which were watercolor style cards of many iconic HOFers. Back then I had no way of acquiring playing days cards of the pre-war up through the 1950's players. I used TTM and sent the Big-League cards to Joe D in SF, Stan Musial, Pee Wee Reese, and a few others. Received them all back and still have them. I have to believe they are legit. Just wish I kept the return envelopes. I guess I did not break the unwritten rule of the time to not auto a playing days card, since this was an off-brand set.
Your Mays photo is a treasure. The Mays video was so cool to watch. Brings back so many memories. And the Ruth is jaw dropping. Great story behind the card. Thanks for sharing your research and expertise on so many levels. All the best of health and success to you and your family in 2024.
    Take care,
    Rob.
P.S. My next video is going to feature Mr. Mays. Stay tuned.

Nice video Rick! Awesome Mays photo! I have never seen that Ruth Card, really cool. There were a lot of autographed cards advertised in SCD in the 1970's. We didn't care in North Dakota; cards were cheaper than buying a ball, and we already had the cards. I even wrote on my cards in the 1960's, to change teams and positions. We had no shows, no card shops, it was the wild west.

Interesting! My friend would put his initials on his cards. I saw plenty of cards with marks on them. But, didn’t see player signed cards. Maybe it was a regional thing. Hope you’re feeling better from the procedure. That can’t be fun

Rick, I so enjoyed hanging out with you at the National. The depth of your knowledge and experience is more valuable than gold. Based on my very limited experience, I agree with you and Dave @bluejacket66 regarding Mantle autos. I have 6 Mantle autos, 1 Ball, 4 Photos and a 1960 Topps Mantle PSA/DNA graded card which I got at a card show in Cincinnati. I handed the card to Mickey, he signed it and handed it back to me. Same with one of the photos. The other items I purchased at various shows. I have not gotten any of the others authenticated. It is very unlikely I would ever sell any of them and, if my heirs want to sell them, they can get them authenticated at the time. I love having them and am happy believing they are genuine even though there is some possibility, however slim, the ones he didn't sign in front of me may not be. Your small rant about PSA seems right to me as well. Anyway, I really love your videos and am always pleased when I see you have posted one! Keep collecting and have an awesome Hobby New Year!

Nice cards Rick! Always enjoy your videos and great insight and research on card sets. Regarding autographs on cards, I’m 64 and started collecting when I was 10. I did a lot of TTM and in-person autos back then with my friends so it wasn’t that uncommon, at least where I’m from. But I do agree the number of vintage Mantle and other HOF cards with autos seems a bit unusual as there has always been those who believe it defaces and lessens the cards value.

Hey, Rick. Nice video. One of these Ruth cards went on sale last night on eBay. I wanted to buy it but SGC’s cert process wasn’t working. I woke up this morning and it was sold😢. Anyways, I looked up the cert number and SGC graded 2 of them.

The catcher was most likely Japanese HOFer Jiro Kuji who most think was the catcher featured in the 1932 Sanella/Astra set.

Congrats on both pick ups, Rick! I see your perspective on those autographed cards, a lot of them coming out of the woodwork. I couldn’t agree more with the registry, I ran to this with Jackie Robinson and their scale which doesn’t make sense.

Awesome Ruth and Mays Rick, I heard PSA dedicates 1 person to running the registry and it’s completely a mess. They aren’t accepting any new requests due to lack of resources. All the money they are swimming in and that’s all they dedicate to it 🤷‍♂️

Really great stuff Rick. First off, that photo of Mays in Forbes Field is so cool! My Dad might have been at that game. His Dad would only take him when the Giants were in town. He has fond memories of watching Mays and McCovey at Forbes Field. Great points on the registry, they really need to have collectors adjust those weights.

Donat is probably pronounced Dough-na (like doughnut but without pronouncing the T) and avion is pronounced av-yon, but you don't really pronounce the N, so it's more like av-yoh, if that makes any sense. In French, the word for Indian is Indien, so Indiana doesn't mean Indian in French. I looked at the checklist for the set and there are cards of planes and of sports, so I'm not really sure what the Indiana would be referring to. But it's definitely a cool card!

    • @vintageoddballcards6103
      @vintageoddballcards6103  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I knew I would butcher the words. No disrespect to the French. Heck my son is in France right now. Lol I believe donat produced two card issues. I didn’t do any research on the second issue. Mine on the back says 136 subjects but I believe this set only had 64 maybe the other set included Indians
