Waterproofing Basement, Cistern Tank, Swimming Pool [HINT: It's NOT Waterproofing Paint]

- When waterproofing below-ground structures, there are situations when applying waterproofing membrane or waterproofing paint is impossible or very inconvenient. In this case, the use of negative side waterproofing membrane is next line of action.
On the other hand, it's quite tricky to choose the right waterproofing membrane for such areas. First, you have to consider a lot of factors, such as, negative side pressure, porosity of the concrete, repairs needed, and the material of the waterproofing membrane.
For example, the use of waterproofing paint is not recommended when waterproofing basements. Waterproofing membranes made of paint tends to suffer from blistering because they cannot withstand the hydrostatic pressure. In short, flexible-type waterproofing membranes are not recommended for such situations.
Another important thing to consider when waterproofing below-ground structures is the damages it has suffered. Repairing these damages is a tricky one. Since the waterproofing membrane relies on the soundness of the substrate, even the tiniest problem could ruin the entire waterproofing system.
So, how exactly can you waterproof below-ground structures like basements, cistern tanks, and swimming pools.
In many cases in the Philippines, the most cost-effective waterproofing method involves applying a waterproofing membrane on the interior side of the wall. Negative side waterproofing prevents water from entering occupied space.
Hydrostatic pressure is a major concern, as hydrostatic pressure will tend to push negative side products away from the substrate. Surface preparation is absolutely essential to ensure that the waterproofing layer adheres firmly to the substrate.
While a variety of products are marketed for negative side applications, some of the most effective waterproofing product have a crystalline capillary system.
CRYSTOR is a crystalline capillary waterproofing system that creates a rigid, impervious barrier on the negative side of the structure. It is recommended for below-ground structures, such as basements, cistern tanks, and swimming pools.

What if you have basement for wall leaking on the inside but the walls are elastomeric painted already? Does crystol work without sanding all the paint off? Or is there another option?

APPLICATION OF Blocktite ETL
1. Surfaces must be dry and free from oil, grease and other contaminants. Remove existing waterproofing if any.
2. Use Leak plug to the corner of wall to wall, flooring and ceiling of the tank.
3. Coat the Surface area with 2 coats of Crystor with slurry mix coat in the 1st coat using the brush
and paste type mix using a trowel for the 2nd coat.
4. Let the Crystor cure for 3 days and treat it with water 2 times for 3 consecutive days.
5. Apply Epocoat MB primer to the surface using brush or roller for 2 coats with 8 hours interval per coat.
6. Apply Protek ETL using brush or roller to the primed surface of the swimmimg pool for 2 coats, 8 hours interval per coat.
7. For curing of Blocktite ETL, let it dry for 7 days before cleaning and usiing the pool.

Application:
1. In a clean container, add 8.75 liters of clean water and add 25kg of CRYSTOR. (Use 1.75 liters of water for 5kg CRYSTOR).
2. Mix thoroughly using an elecrtic paddle mixer until a creamy consistency is achieved.
3. Allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes before using.
4. Apply the first coat uing a brush or roller.
5. Let it cure for 24 hours.
6. Apply the second coat using a flat trowel to achieve a smooth finish.
7. Damp the surface 3 times a day for 3 days.

After damping 3x a day for 3 days, you can now proceed to flood test. After Floodtest, let it cure for 7 days before applying skim coat/paint.
