      Use a hydrophobic pore-blocking ingredient to make concrete repel water, such as Caltite by Cementaid

  • @noobknifereviews9205
    @noobknifereviews9205 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Most of this is quite true for membrane failures, but there are many technologies for membrane protection that are great when installed correctly. Just relying on concrete admixtures, crystalline additions, other pore blocking technologies which is referred to here, is just 1 approach to watertight construction. But concrete cracks, and also has many placement considerations that can upset this also. Dry basement construction is about 3 types of protection as per British standard. 1. is membrane protection. 2. is integral concrete quality plus the joints / CJ's using waterstops. 3. Drainage design. This is a layered approach to dry basement design, and covers multiple lines of defense, as you say, application issues are common. You have to plan for success and have all parties working to a common cause. Having QA and hold points verified at key times, will improve any application. Adding pore blockers alone is perilous and disrespectful to understanding the overall dynamics of waterproofing.

    25 years ago I had some Ice and Water Shield left over so I put it on, 2-ply, on a patio as a "temp" solution. This stuff is only approved as an underpayment. It is still in service and has not even deteriorated, de-bonded, or become stiff. It has never leaked. What matters is if your installer is a professional and understands his/her materials. That is the real take-a-way here. The alternatives? Well, over competency, you have none (also the take-a-way here). You (or someone later) can pay for your mistakes, or, you can pay a professional--who might make a mistake. Or wait till we can just print it.

    Nice 3D representations, but I do not agree on stating that TPO o PVC membranes do not work (or even bituminous ones). It is always required some kind of protection for the concrete so water doesn't corrode the rebars or damage concrete. Fully adhered membranes work perfectly since these can be either post o pre applied and the adherence is both chemical and mechanical to concrete. In severe cases compartment systems can be used to have a segmented waterproofing, so in case there is a punctual failure it will only affect one specific compartment. Several solutions such as wet applied membranes, fully adhered TPO membranes, PVC membranes with compartment systems. injection hoses and polyurea, among many others, might be the solution. Bituminous membranes stand approximately up to 0.5 bars, while fully adhered TPO membranes can stand up to 2 bars. It cannot be said that a technology doesn't work if you don't know the factors such as water column, water quality, durability expectations (service life), available budget, level of permeability required based on use type (according to BS 8102:2022).So, my recommendation, don't generalize, bituminous membranes in some projects that are not exposed to agressive conditions or don't require a long service life. Another point: if by any reason the membrane fails, you can always use injection resins as a corrective way to stop water in negative pressure.

    🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
    00:19 👷‍♂️ Waterproofing membrane installation requires skilled labor and 90% of failures are due to poor workmanship.
    00:32 ❌ Picking an inappropriate membrane for the intended application can lead to failure of the waterproofing application.
    01:03 💧 Any debonding of the membrane leads to water penetration into the concrete.
    01:26 ⬇️ Certain membranes not fully adhering to the concrete surface make them unsuitable for below-grade applications.
    01:39 🌧️ Applying a membrane to a damp, wet or uneven surface can cause debonding.
    01:52 🔄 Lack of adequate priming prior to waterproofing application can result in failure.
    02:19 🔗 NOT fully bonding overlaps can cause potential breaches in the waterproofing layer.
    02:32 🎈 Failure to properly prime a surface may lead to air becoming trapped under the membrane, causing debonding and blistering.
    03:01💔 Damage such as puncturing and tearing from construction activities often cause breaches of the waterproofing layer.
    03:30 ⏲️ Over time, waterproofing membranes may deteriorate due to exposure to the environment, which can lead to failure.
    04:24 🔄 In conclusion, new technologies that permanently reduce permeability and improve concrete properties are recommended as a solution over membrane applications.

    Not sure why liquid EPDM would fail other than not putting the primer on. It's pretty elastic and you can layer it pretty thick. You could also not have to worry about screeding because the EPDM will fill the gaps and remain elastic. You would think that you could put a 60mil liquid EPDM barrier and encapsulate the entire exterior and it would be more water tight than a frogs ahole.
