This Kalabari story is always twisted to favor a group. This narrative is clearly an ENDE AME favored narrative and it is very very NOT TRUE. Elem Ama was a territory of KE people which was contested by the Bille . At that time the regions were termed as ANGA which means place. Bille regions were called BILLE ANGA while Ke regions were called KE ANGA.. Elem Ama was a KE ANGA AMA which means KE REGION settlement. . People were living there before the Ende ame arrived . The Ende ame were some of the Ijaw that lived at OBU AMAFA.. They were children of an Ijaw man who came from MEIN kingdom called OGOBIRI.. Their leader became known as PEREBO KALABARI because the Ikwerre neighbors called him so as a derog . This was because , the Ijaw people were fund of begging and one of the main givers was the Perebo hence he became Perebo of the Kala ibari .. The Ikwerres called them with the same word they always used to beg ( PA KALA KE IBARI ) meaning , please give me a little . That name became the name of the Ijaws. Many of them drifted to different parts of the Delta even to as far as Cameroon with the identity KALABARI which the Ikwerre had called them. A group of them under the leader OPU KOROYE were the first to be documented as KALABARI people and were documented by the Portuguese as CALABAR people ( CALABAR was pronounced KALABARI and not KALABAH ) When the ENDE AME moved to Elem Ama ( TORUSARAMA PIRI by the KE people ) being a KE ANGA AMA had other residents before the ENDE AME got there . The Koroame also left their place in the rio real and moved to Elem ama.. With their leader Owere Daba.. Owere Daba became the first leader of Elem ama as he united the words . Unfortunately, the Okrikans attacked them and majority of the Koro ame ward was destroyed .. After the attack, the people needed a new leadership since the Owere Daba people lacked one as the qualified man Sele ye Fubara was not allowed by his mother to rule. Amakiri was under DABA the leader of the Ende ame ward whose mother was from KE boldly came out and was adopted by all including the Tombians who were close neighbors of the Elem ama people . When Amakiri became king he had the oath to make his offspring rule forever and everyone agreed and so Amakiri went ahead to amalgamate all the neighboring Ijaw clans and communities into the new UNION which he called KALABARI .
