When I was at college we were also taught to flux the pipe not the fitting, my old tutor used to call flux the boiler killer! Good lesson boys!

In my city & guilds I was taught that you should never put the flux into the fitting - only onto the tube. Othersie is gets pushed inside the tube, and contaminates the water. Put it onto the tube, and it gets pushed up the tube and only onto the mating surfaces of the fitting, minimising the contamination inside the tube.

+SpiderElectron In my city and guilds it was fitting only and also iev never seen a plumber flux up the tube, there is lots from your city and guilds course that u will never use in site, thanks for letting us know how times have changed

+The Champ Yes. Think about where the excess flux goes if you flux the tube rather than the fiittng, and vice versa.

Wanna be careful with applying Flux after you've soldered, as he said capillary action, the fitting is still hot and could pull in the flux and then create air bubbles(after the flux burned off) where im from that's what were though. Also we apply more solder, until there a drop. But it's also much more colder during winter so that very much affects how we work(-30c).
