It's funny how ever since McDonalds pulled away from the fun Ronald McDonald days and tried to draw a healthier crowd...the in restaurant experience has been extremely depressing. Poor workers with bad attitudes...its like nobody wants to be there.
They are really good but I think the Mcskillet burrito they had back in the mid 2000's was better, not just my favorite breakfast item but favorite thing in general. They also had a grilled chicken flatbread back in the early 2000's that was probably my second favorite thing ever, I stoped eating Big Macs after it came out.
The one item that McDonalds should have never discontinued on their menu, was the breakfast steak, egg and cheese bagel! It was the most tasty and delicious thing that McDonalds has ever put on their menu! Recently, the Buffalo/Western New York McDonalds have, for whatever strange reason discontinued it! I sure hope that they put it back on their menu soon, and keep it there!
The BEST the little bite sized chocolate chip and the shortbread animal cookies 😍 ANd those free ice cream cone coupons they handed out during Halloween
They were great I use to buy 6-8 boxes at a time where we would drive somewhere and the kids would start fighting pull out a couple of boxes car would quiet for 1/2 hour
I miss the Arch Deluxe. It was the best burger McDonalds ever had. I used to get a super sized Arch Deluxe meal every Friday after school and watch TGIF lol good times.
I remember they were forced to withdraw the McAfrica Burger.Due to people saying it was wrong to call to it that because of the extreme poverty in the country.
The arch deluxe was the bomb..I remember when rolling stone magazine,which I had a subscription to,had free coupons for the new sandwich for like 3 months … I used every coupon till they disappeared after 3-4 months…it was their best sandwich for sure …yum
The fried apple and cherry pies with bubbly crust, old strawberry sundae with chopped peanuts, signature cookies (better than animal crackers), and the warm cheese breakfast danish are the items I miss! Not sure if they still offer the steak and egg bagel. I would order with extra sauce and no cheese. I never ever eat at McDonald's anymore since they microwave the fish sandwich and make it soggy even when saying I would wait for a fresh cooked filet. Used to try getting a vanilla softserve cone a couple times a year but the machine was usually down. But the memory of McD's heyday in the 70's still brings a smile!
Its was a “Burger of the month” Biggest problems were supply issue with the dark rye buns and the large batch sizes of cooking the onions , it meant alot of waste at the end of the day, and delays during the day when an entire batch of onions needed to be cooked up. It doesnt matter of you are talking about icecream, soda, french fries, caramel onions,even change in the drawers one of the biggest causes of sudden and massive delays is because and employee doesnt tell the shift manager that a certain product is running low. Suddenly there are no pies, no french fries, the ice cream machine has seized
I think they still brink them back for the holidays. I remember getting one last year. I think the filling was supposed to be sugar cookie flavored custard.
The McD,L,T was AWESOME! It was my favorite when they still had it... I'd love to see that come back, as well as the deep fried pies. They were MUCH better
Right around the same time as the Egg McMuffin. Used to buy them together, but the danishes weren't so easy to eat one-handed. Too bad, because they were great!
Yep, I worked at Mac's. when the Danish first came out they came in trays of 12, each one was steamed and served hot. Then they ditched the steamers and served them wrapped individually cold, The steamers were a pain, the needles on the steamers would always clog up with hard water deposits. We also had raspberry and cinnamon danish. Cinnamon was the top seller
I really miss the cheese danish that they made in the 70's . We use to stop by for one every morning on our way to school! They would heat it up with a ball of butter that would melt just right, So delicious! Bring it back! Please!
The Big N’ Tasty used to be my favorite McDonalds burger as a kid. I was really sad when I went through the drive-thru line in 2011 only to find they’d discontinued it.
The daily double was the replacement item for the big n tasty basically the same toppings just with two regular hamburger Pattie’s instead but sadly that’s gone now also
The only item I remember well was the McDLT. It was great, even though the packaging was overkill. I also miss the old French fries and fried apple pies (pre-1990). I remember the "Food Police" were outraged because they used a mixture of vegetable oil and beef tallow (lard) to fry everything. The pies get baked today and the French fries are limp and wimpy. I don't even bother to eat at McDonald's anymore. The quality of their food has slumped in the past 10 or 15 years.

The chicken fajitas were actually tasty and they were healthier and low-cal compared to their other menu items. I don’t eat fast food often at all, but I miss those!
For awhile there with those Angus burgers, McDonald's was making some pretty good burgers! I was very disappointed when they discontinued those. In the meantime, though, I've gotten pretty good at making good burgers myself, and seldom go to McDonald's anymore. I can make a better burger, better fries, and pour my own pop for a small fraction of the price.
My first job was at McDonald's. If I was on a long shift, at break time I would buy my usual: a regular hamburger, a regular fry, both 20¢ each, along with a small Coke at 15¢. Best 55¢ I spent on a break in the early 70's!
My first job was also at McDonald’s. But we hardly ever bought lunches, we just dropped a couple of extra nuggets every time we drop the batch. That took care of us.
When I was a kid, I LIVED for the Mc dlt!! My family would get Mc Donald's every Saturday night and I'd be thinking about that Mc dlt all week long. I would be all over it if it ever made a comeback!
I have had the McDLT and I loved it. My aunt had it and she would always ask for a perfectly sliced tomato with hers. What was the big deal? Even if the tomato was not sliced perfectly, the McDLT was that good.
I grew up in France in the late 80s and 90s and we only had 2 major fast food chain McDonalds and Quick (a Belgian burger chain). Burger king did not make it and had to close in the 80s/90s. To what I remember is that mu parents generation was not big burger/fast food fan but us kids we loved it so going to McDonalds was a treat. I remember the commercials and happy meal toys. I miss those days. I remember visiting the US in the 90s and and being suprised by the amount of different chains with different burgers.
I’m not sure mcds sold soup everywhere, but in Wisconsin, we could get broccoli soup. I loved it. I’d get that and a small fry and dip the fries in the soup. So good. I miss the fruit and yogurt parfait as well.
Those Bagel Breakfast Sandwiches were dope! I remember going there all the time during the late 90's and early 2000's. I don't know why they got rid of them. Everyone I knew at the time ordered them on a regular basis.
Ever pass through MD in the morning, bring a cooler and load up. Dont have the Spanish Omelet or the Ham/Egg bagel, but still Steak and American Bacon.
Hot Mustard has never been discontinued in our area - 20+ years and we get it every time we go there. Also - the spicy chicken sandwich is still on the menu and is regularly a part of the 2 for (now) 3.99 promotion. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I actually miss the Cheddar Melt.
Iowa still offers the Hot Mustard sauce. I dip fries in it rather than nuggets and even buy extra to take home and have on chicken tenders from the grocery store. I once bought 10 HM to take home.
@@Maulbert At one point, it was announced that the Hot Mustard would be discontinued nationally, and replaced with Sriracha Ranch (that one sounds good too). But the switch never happened here in Western New York state.
I grew up in Evansville Indiana and was privileged to taste everything McDonald’s decided to test in the 1990’s as this was their primary test market for the United States. When my family moved away I missed the ever changing menus at my local McDonalds in my new hometowns.
I worked at McDonald's for eight years. I'm familiar with many of these items. Some were really good and I was always at a loss why they discontinued them. The soups were pretty popular. We only served them in the winter. I watched them fade out of existence. First year we had several varieties. Next year was just chicken noodle and vegetable beef, then the next year they never came back. Had a lot of people ask for them though. The Arch Deluxe and Hero were really good. One item missing here are the Fried Apple pie. It was replaced by the healthier Baked Apple pie, which is good, but I remember how delicious the fried pie was. People don't go to McDonald's for healthy choices. Did have a lot of people upset about discontinuing the Salad Shakers. They were easier to eat on the go I hear. My opinion is McDonald's idea of salads always sucked.
The fried apple pie probably disappeared from too many people getting blisters on their lips and inside of the mouth. Sometimes those things were lava hot when you chomped into one!
@Karl with a K I was always told they had experts and did a lot of research on new items. Why not use the money spent on all that and pay workers more, then just ask them. It's be more accurate.
Yes, the soups were a welcome food choice in the winter - I remember working At McDonalds on the Navy Base in North Chicago. Being very cold there, the soup was a popular item. Tried it myself and it was good.
Soup in USA MacDonalds may be too risky to sell - too many lawyers roaming the land and Americans in cars pouring hot soup over themselves as they accelerate away. Whilst simultaneously shooting out traffic signs! Love America!
Those mighty wings were really good too. I only had them once or twice before they pulled the plug. Surprisingly good. For flavor, the KFC hot wings were slightly better, but the mighty wings had a much better crunch.
I LOVED the chicken fajitas. I was so bummed out when McDonald's stopped selling them. Just seeing the container they came in brought back so many delicious memories. I wish they'd bring them back.

I used to get the fruit and walnut salad all the time! It was really good. They had the delicious grilled chicken snack wraps for a while, too. Made eating at McDonald's a lot less guilty when there was something at least somewhat healthy on the menu... 😍
Yesss!! When I was an avid Big Mac eating twelve year old, I only ate this sandwich. I remember the taste and all those onions and that delicious sauce. I always lamented its absence and wished it could come back. How could anything so good not be on the menu?
I remember when it came out nationally in 88, but I think they tested it in Iowa in 86 or 87, maybe I'm just senile but I know I was eating them in H.S. They are so fukn good!!!
I don't get the big deal with the McDLT. It is just a quarter pounder with lettuce and tomato only. Would rather have the Quarter pounder deluxe that has that, but with the rest of the trimmings like pickles and onions.
@@deborahhoover8115 It balanced out. One paycheck families were more common. Compare home prices then with today's. When I was really small I remember gas prices being 27¢ a gallon. The paper money said "Silver certificate".
It's not the prices of old, but using the app, I can get two McDoubles ($3), a large fry ($1), and a large drink ($1) for only $5.00 (+ tax). That's not bad at all in these tight times!
I remember they had the southern style chicken sandwich that they removed which kinda competed with chic-fil-a before they got big and expanded. It was my favorite item and they removed it. They brought it back as the new crispy chicken sandwich but they clearly changed something because it doesn't taste like it used to. :(
The southern style chicken had dill in it made kind of taste like pickle same for the old breakfast chicken once they got rid of breakfast chicken they changed the Patties entirely
They still have Hot Mustard in Washington state. They dropped it, then brought it back 3 months later due to, and I quote the employee who told me, "a significant noticeable drop in McNugget sales".

Whataburger currently has a variant of the mushroom swiss burger on their menu, but is ages behind the original Mcdonald's one in terms of flavor and appareance...
The go-to I get now at McDonald's is the 2 cheeseburger meal because it's the only affordable meal on the menu. Usually $5-7 depending on location. I fully expect them to either jack the price up or discontinue it before long.
Basically it was hamburger mixed with soy in the patty. Those were awful and as a teenager when I worked at McDump it barely ever sold. The owner pulled it from the menu early since it was barely ever sold.

I first ate at McDonald’s in 1962. Two burgers, two fries, and a Coke, 64 cents. No sales tax. The burgers were 15 cents, fries 12 cents and Coke was a dime. No drive through and no inside seating. Walk up orders only. The fries were cooked in beef fat and were incredibly tasty - almost addicting. The food served at McDonald’s today is crap by comparison.
I remember those days for a dollar I could have a meal at McDonald's.. And have money left over to go to the movies and buy a small cup.of soda and a box of popcorn.

They still sell it in Brazil. It's called the McCheddar. It comes with a cheese sauce to dip it in also. SOOOO GOOD!!! They also still sell the Big n' Tasty.
I used to work at McDonald's restaurant in 1993 and I worked at lunchtime. It was very crowed everyday for lunch with people ordering the "supersize" drinks and French fries. It was stressful filling all these orders, but I did it no problem. We were right across the street from a hospital and I couldn't believe that the doctors and nurses were coming over eating big mac supersize meals and I saw them lighting up cigarettes when they walked out the door. I think a lot of people have missed the super-sized option since they ended it, because a lot of people ordered that. 🍔🍟

But they weren't in there every single day, so it's o.k. to eat something fun sometimes. I'm sure it was hard to resist, being right across the street from the hospital. They walked over. Yes, saw them eating french fries and puffing on the cigarettes. Hopefully they quit smoking before it harmed their health terribly.

I totally remember the fried pies. They were great! I also remember the cheese danish. I’ve tried many many other cheese danish from bakeries all over the US. Never did find one that was a good as McDonalds. I wonder who baked them?? Anybody know?
Onion nuggets! They were my absolute favorite when I was a kid and every time I bring them up to somebody they look at me like I have two heads. So glad to see I was not imagining things LOL
I'm old, so I remember basically all of this. However, the one I still miss the most, and still would love for them to revisit, is the steak sandwich. Beef, onions, steak sauce. I miss that sauce the most!

I remember many of this items. I eat at McDonald's every once in awhile. I ate there alot in high school. The McRib was always my favorite. I was always suprised that it hasn't been permanently added to the menu instead of just a seasonal thing.

The one I worked at had the Rib Junior for a couple years in the late 90's. They never sold, the same ones sat in the same old nasty, burned sauce all day. If they were too bad occasionally they'd get cooked to order but I was generally the only one who cared about quality in any way, and even then I barely cared. After a while I started to resent the slobs coming in to eat that poison. Anyway, the Rib Jr. was a mini version of the ribwich served on the small hamburger bun. Same meat, same sauce, but nobody ever ate them. I think people really liked the long bun, and the rarity of the ribwich.
My understanding is it has to do with pork cost. When the cost of pork is low they bring it back. Also FOMO. They take it away so people can miss it and then they bring it back. Part of their strategy.
I remember in the 80's they had huge hot cream cheese danishes on the breakfast menu. I used to love those. The grilled onions, steak, egg and cheese biscuit was outstanding too. It was a huge delicious brick of grease and yumminess.
When the Chicken Selects came out I gave them a try and loved them so much I stopped eating the Chicken McNuggets (which I was a big fan of) and ate those every time instead. They seemed to be a lot classier to me and tasted a lot better compared to the greasy-like McNuggets. Plus they came with classy sauces like Ranch and Honey Mustard. I was very bummed out when the Chicken Selects were discontinued and reluctantly went back to the McNuggets. I miss them a lot.
I wish they'd bring back the fajitas and breakfast burrito. Whenever I went to McDonald's I always ordered the chicken fajitas. Would love to see it come back again..
In Connecticut the breakfast burrito also stayed. I always get them and even though they come with a packet of picante sauce, I add a packet of fire sauce from another fast food store. It’s so delicious!
I worked at Mcdonalds right about the time the fajita meat when from having ro be cooked on the grill to being precooked and then the fajitas where assembled and wrapped and then just microwaved….. i used to snag them and eat them cold
The hot and spicy McChicken is still available at many locations. I am an over the road trucker, and visit many markets. Also, most locations still have hot mustard sauce as well. As always I enjoyed your video!
@@adriannadd1983 I'm in New Orleans and we've always, to this day, had the hot n spicy McChicken. Growing up I actually never knew there was such thing as a "plain" McChicken lol. We also have the hot mustard. I actually just got some from a McDonald's yesterday.
Loved the Big N Tasty, the cheddar melt, the McDLT, deep-fried pies, and the little Chocolatey Chip cookies! Also, does anyone remember the summer burger? I don’t remember what it was called - it was just a summer special sometime in the ‘00s, and it was a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and bread-and-butter pickle chips.
They used to have cherry pie turnovers as a dessert item. Sometimes you will see apple pie turnovers still, but never the cherry (which of course was my favorite).
I miss when McDonald's had strawberry sundaes they don't sell that where I live anymore. Also the white cheddar onion burger. The frozen strawberry lemonade drink. And one year at Christmas they had a peppermint McFlurry which had candy cane pieces in it and was soooo good I keep hoping they'll bring it back at Christmas some year but they haven't yet!

Out of all the discontinued items, I don't understand how the hot dogs failed. Hamburgers and hot dogs are sold at other American fast food chains including Nathan's Famous, Sonic and Five Guys. How did McDonald's fail at marketing hot dogs? One thing I noticed is that the permanent menu items haven't changed in years. I'm starting to think most customers don't like change at McDonald's. They want the same menu year after year.
According to other sources. Ray Kroc didn’t like the hotdog because he didn’t want to sell a item people couldn’t understand the ingredients of. “Certain irony there with todays items”. It has been brought back a few times after his death, but the demand just isn’t there.
I remember the mc salad in the cup I remember the mc chicken strips I remember the walnut salad the wings I remember the strawberry shortcake mcclurry but it was so popular in my country they couldn't keep buying the ingredients for it it was getting too expensive I was one of their fans with that strawberry mcflurry I remember arch deluxe big and tasty I remember chicken fajitas and burritos we of course I remember hot and mustard sauce the chuan sauce sweet chili sauce
i remembered it back in the day i would get an ice cream cone and my brother 2 hot pies and we would take turns put pieces of the pie into the vanilla ice cream
I remember basically all of these items. The only thing that wasn’t mentioned is the snack wraps that came out the same time as the angus burgers. They had the deluxe wrap, the mushroom swiss wrap(my favorite), the Big Mac wrap and the chicken wrap in either grilled or regular. It was quietly discontinued after the Angus burgers ran the course of their promotion
Here in Canada, that Angus burger was legit good. Lots of quality toppings to choose from and good beef. When they launched it, they would actually have someone come and do table service bringing it out on a wooden tray with a small metal basket of fries. A few times they even got our fountain drinks and ketchup. My buddy and I called them the Success Burger because you knew you’ve made it when you went to mcds and they were doing table service.
As a former McDonald's employee, we were always told to send in ideas to the test kitchen and see how they would work out in a limited market. Being from Philly, the steak sandwich would never fly here but we did bring back the son of Mac for a limited time for the 25th anniversary.
I knew a store in Kansas City that brought back the McFeast, Strawberry Shortcake McFlurry, & Eggs Benedict McMuffin for the year of the 50th. They even did a deal where you could get a McFeast, medium fries & drink AND the McFlurry for $3.25, $6.50 for the large version. They had the biggest sales in KC for a WHOLE FREAKING YEAR! They even tried to return the famed Szechauan Sauce, but this was denied by upper management for fear of the chaos it would likely cause among Rick & Morty fans.
What I really miss from the McDonald's menu is... reasonably priced food and functioning ice cream/shake machines. I don't eat at McDonald's very often, but when I do, I'm always amazed at the price of my order and never surprised to hear "I'm sorry, our ice cream/shake machine is not working." I'm not sure about other regions in the US, but the Hot Mustard dipping sauce is available in Georgia. I get it every time I order Chicken McNuggets. I had never heard of the McLobster Roll, until I visited New Hampshire, several years ago and decided to give it a try. I'm not a huge fan of seafood, but I tried it and it wasn't too bad.
Ice Cream machine isnt McDonalds doing its Taylor they get tons of money fixing there machines so would you stop the money flow. It hurts McDonalds more not being able to sell them and forking all the money to taylor tech because McDonalds only allow them to work on there machines

Facts! I remember that one, I worked there too during college, and I was passing out free samples in the drive-through parking lot. I got into trouble for having one while handing them out but I lived in Arizona (hottest state in US), but I told my boss, that's how I got people to buy them... by drinking one looking refreshed! xD

@@chrisretired5379 The Shamrock makes its return every year for St.Patty's Day. The Arctic Orange will only show up in the summer months every 5 or 6 years. The Blueberry and the Banana I haven't seen since the early 80's. I don't think they were very big sellers, so McD's just sort of gave up on them. Anyway, happy hunting!
I was a teen during 80s and only two of these do I remember.... Georgia must've missed them 😁. The shaker salad didn't care for....not enough dressing and hard to shake properly but the Arch Deluxe I really enjoyed 😋. Thanks for the history 🕊️
I worked for a McDonald's when we offered the salad shaker. The biggest complaint was is was less salad than the platter for more money, even though we'd pour the shaker onto a platter right in front of the customer to prove this wasn't the case. I lost track of how many of those I took home
The Pineapple Burger was something Ray Croc thought would do well on Fridays in Catholic dominated markets but decided to test it head to head with the Filet of Fish invented by one of his franchisers. The Filet of Fish won by a wide margin and the Filet of Fish was born.
They had them here in S.NH in the month of Nov. I would buy the meal and and extra one every time I went! haha I don't know why they don't just keep it on the menu.
Anyone else remember the McLean? I was living in San Pedro CA at the time. It was a reduced calorie burger that contained seaweed (careegenan?). Didn't sound good but I really liked it!
Strangely it doesn’t sound like it would be good but it was. It was not greasy like some of the other burgers. Also they used too have a really good grilled chicken sandwich also
i wouldn't mind trying those onion bite things. they should give those another shot. i can't imagine they'd be expensive to produce... probably even easier than regular onion rings
In 1971 (back when the french fries were made on site out of whole potatoes, blanched & fried in beef tallow), the McDs that I worked at was an internal test-bed for corn on the cob, a 1/3 of a cob piece of corn. It was an immediate fail, as the kernels would shrivel up after just a minute in the warming bin and took too long to cook for it to be a low volume quick turn offering. It never made it to McDs menu that I know of. I do miss the Angus burgers. They were their best burgers, ...now I have to settle for an occasional Quarter Pounder Deluxe with extra onions. 😔
Same. I liked the burger they came out with to promote Batman Forever, it was three Pattie’s with three kinds of cheese on a sesame seed style “hero” oblong bun.
I was working for McDonald’s in the 90’s and remember the Hero Burger very well! It wasn’t at all a bad seller, in fact it sold very well! The reason for its discontinuation was two reasons, one being at the time McDonald’s had a promotion called “The burger of the month” and the other being it was a tie-in promotion for a film, and like it’s namesake meant that each and every single month meant that a new concept was introduced. McDonald’s didn’t ever release the item afterwards due to cost reasons.
I loved the fajitas! They only cost about $1.35 in my town and a customer on my paper route always gave me a coupon book of 50 $1 McDonald’s coupons for Christmas so I rarely paid full price for them!
Oh man this video brings back memories! As a former McDonald's employee I remember some of these items. Fun fact: The Super Hero Burger was brought back in Canada around 2002-2004 and was called the Hockey Hero Sandwich. It was essentially the same sandwich, just with a different name.
This was also branded the "Gilbert Brown burger" in Wisconsin, named for the (current at the time) Green Bay Packers football player, because it was big enough to satisfy a lineman!
What killed the "full size" pizza, was you had to turn the box sideways to hand it through the drive-thru window. They toyed with special parking and an employee would "run" it out to your car. They designed a new window with a bank teller style drawer, but it was cost prohibitive for one item. On most of the other items you mention the bottom line was the "supply chain". The sheer volume of let's say lobster claw meat required globally, created cost and environmental issues. Their eternal quest for a "Whooper stopper" as they call it resulted in every lettuce, tomato, etc. combination. Only in Israel did they figure out it's the "flame broiling" that counts. Micky D's has a big ego and won't admit you gotta grill it. As Burger King quipped, "It's why people don't have backyard frying pans".
All of the McDonald's here in Canada now have multiple special parking spots where the employee runs out your order to the car (since eating inside was closed because of covid). It was a look at the future! They knew we would have ordering apps on our phones!
Bring back the deep fried apple and cherry pies! They were amazing. Sometimes they'd have lemon also.
I was going to say the same! The eating healthy craze started and out the window they went. Baked apple pie is not what I want to order at a fast food restaurant. Wish they'd bring it back!

It's funny how ever since McDonalds pulled away from the fun Ronald McDonald days and tried to draw a healthier crowd...the in restaurant experience has been extremely depressing. Poor workers with bad attitudes...its like nobody wants to be there.
The steak and egg bagel was absolutely the best breakfast item McDonald's ever had,pissed me right off when they were taken off the menu.

They are really good but I think the Mcskillet burrito they had back in the mid 2000's was better, not just my favorite breakfast item but favorite thing in general. They also had a grilled chicken flatbread back in the early 2000's that was probably my second favorite thing ever, I stoped eating Big Macs after it came out.
McDLT was really good. To this day, I'll never fully get over its discontinuance.

The one item that McDonalds should have never discontinued on their menu, was the breakfast steak, egg and cheese bagel! It was the most tasty and delicious thing that McDonalds has ever put on their menu! Recently, the Buffalo/Western New York McDonalds have, for whatever strange reason discontinued it! I sure hope that they put it back on their menu soon, and keep it there!
The bagel sandwiches were dropped at the beginning of the pandemic. They came back to the Chicago market about a year ago.

The arch deluxe was the bomb..I remember when rolling stone magazine,which I had a subscription to,had free coupons for the new sandwich for like 3 months … I used every coupon till they disappeared after 3-4 months…it was their best sandwich for sure …yum
The fried apple and cherry pies with bubbly crust, old strawberry sundae with chopped peanuts, signature cookies (better than animal crackers), and the warm cheese breakfast danish are the items I miss! Not sure if they still offer the steak and egg bagel. I would order with extra sauce and no cheese. I never ever eat at McDonald's anymore since they microwave the fish sandwich and make it soggy even when saying I would wait for a fresh cooked filet. Used to try getting a vanilla softserve cone a couple times a year but the machine was usually down. But the memory of McD's heyday in the 70's still brings a smile!

Biggest problems were supply issue with the dark rye buns and the large batch sizes of cooking the onions , it meant alot of waste at the end of the day, and delays during the day when an entire batch of onions needed to be cooked up.
It doesnt matter of you are talking about icecream, soda, french fries, caramel onions,even change in the drawers one of the biggest causes of sudden and massive delays is because and employee doesnt tell the shift manager that a certain product is running low. Suddenly there are no pies, no french fries, the ice cream machine has seized

Yep, I worked at Mac's. when the Danish first came out they came in trays of 12, each one was steamed and served hot. Then they ditched the steamers and served them wrapped individually cold, The steamers were a pain, the needles on the steamers would always clog up with hard water deposits. We also had raspberry and cinnamon danish. Cinnamon was the top seller

The daily double was the replacement item for the big n tasty basically the same toppings just with two regular hamburger Pattie’s instead but sadly that’s gone now also
The only item I remember well was the McDLT. It was great, even though the packaging was overkill. I also miss the old French fries and fried apple pies (pre-1990). I remember the "Food Police" were outraged because they used a mixture of vegetable oil and beef tallow (lard) to fry everything. The pies get baked today and the French fries are limp and wimpy. I don't even bother to eat at McDonald's anymore. The quality of their food has slumped in the past 10 or 15 years.

For awhile there with those Angus burgers, McDonald's was making some pretty good burgers! I was very disappointed when they discontinued those. In the meantime, though, I've gotten pretty good at making good burgers myself, and seldom go to McDonald's anymore. I can make a better burger, better fries, and pour my own pop for a small fraction of the price.
My first job was at McDonald's. If I was on a long shift, at break time I would buy my usual: a regular hamburger, a regular fry, both 20¢ each, along with a small Coke at 15¢. Best 55¢ I spent on a break in the early 70's!

When I was a kid, I LIVED for the Mc dlt!! My family would get Mc Donald's every Saturday night and I'd be thinking about that Mc dlt all week long. I would be all over it if it ever made a comeback!
I have had the McDLT and I loved it. My aunt had it and she would always ask for a perfectly sliced tomato with hers. What was the big deal? Even if the tomato was not sliced perfectly, the McDLT was that good.

I grew up in France in the late 80s and 90s and we only had 2 major fast food chain McDonalds and Quick (a Belgian burger chain). Burger king did not make it and had to close in the 80s/90s. To what I remember is that mu parents generation was not big burger/fast food fan but us kids we loved it so going to McDonalds was a treat. I remember the commercials and happy meal toys. I miss those days. I remember visiting the US in the 90s and and being suprised by the amount of different chains with different burgers.
I’m not sure mcds sold soup everywhere, but in Wisconsin, we could get broccoli soup. I loved it. I’d get that and a small fry and dip the fries in the soup. So good. I miss the fruit and yogurt parfait as well.
The walnuts were the winning factor. So good.

Hot Mustard has never been discontinued in our area - 20+ years and we get it every time we go there. Also - the spicy chicken sandwich is still on the menu and is regularly a part of the 2 for (now) 3.99 promotion. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I actually miss the Cheddar Melt.

Iowa still offers the Hot Mustard sauce. I dip fries in it rather than nuggets and even buy extra to take home and have on chicken tenders from the grocery store. I once bought 10 HM to take home.

I worked at McDonald's for eight years. I'm familiar with many of these items. Some were really good and I was always at a loss why they discontinued them. The soups were pretty popular. We only served them in the winter. I watched them fade out of existence. First year we had several varieties. Next year was just chicken noodle and vegetable beef, then the next year they never came back. Had a lot of people ask for them though. The Arch Deluxe and Hero were really good. One item missing here are the Fried Apple pie. It was replaced by the healthier Baked Apple pie, which is good, but I remember how delicious the fried pie was. People don't go to McDonald's for healthy choices. Did have a lot of people upset about discontinuing the Salad Shakers. They were easier to eat on the go I hear. My opinion is McDonald's idea of salads always sucked.
The fried apple pie probably disappeared from too many people getting blisters on their lips and inside of the mouth. Sometimes those things were lava hot when you chomped into one!
@Karl with a K I was always told they had experts and did a lot of research on new items. Why not use the money spent on all that and pay workers more, then just ask them. It's be more accurate.
Yes, the soups were a welcome food choice in the winter - I remember working At McDonalds on the Navy Base in North Chicago. Being very cold there, the soup was a popular item. Tried it myself and it was good.
Soup in USA MacDonalds may be too risky to sell - too many lawyers roaming the land and Americans in cars pouring hot soup over themselves as they accelerate away. Whilst simultaneously shooting out traffic signs! Love America!
Those mighty wings were really good too. I only had them once or twice before they pulled the plug. Surprisingly good.
For flavor, the KFC hot wings were slightly better, but the mighty wings had a much better crunch.
The original pie was out of this world. Unique! So sad it's not on anymore...

It's not the prices of old, but using the app, I can get two McDoubles ($3), a large fry ($1), and a large drink ($1) for only $5.00 (+ tax). That's not bad at all in these tight times!

McD's had a terrible fried chicken sandwich on their menu for many years. Their version to compete in the chicken sandwich wars is awful!
The southern style chicken had dill in it made kind of taste like pickle same for the old breakfast chicken once they got rid of breakfast chicken they changed the Patties entirely

The go-to I get now at McDonald's is the 2 cheeseburger meal because it's the only affordable meal on the menu. Usually $5-7 depending on location. I fully expect them to either jack the price up or discontinue it before long.

Hey Rhett I think you missed the McLean Deluxe. That was their low fat "healthy" version of a quarter pounder.
Basically it was hamburger mixed with soy in the patty. Those were awful and as a teenager when I worked at McDump it barely ever sold. The owner pulled it from the menu early since it was barely ever sold.

I first ate at McDonald’s in 1962. Two burgers, two fries, and a Coke, 64 cents. No sales tax. The burgers were 15 cents, fries 12 cents and Coke was a dime. No drive through and no inside seating. Walk up orders only. The fries were cooked in beef fat and were incredibly tasty - almost addicting. The food served at McDonald’s today is crap by comparison.
I remember those days for a dollar I could have a meal at McDonald's.. And have money left over to go to the movies and buy a small cup.of soda and a box of popcorn.

They still sell it in Brazil. It's called the McCheddar. It comes with a cheese sauce to dip it in also. SOOOO GOOD!!! They also still sell the Big n' Tasty.

I used to work at McDonald's restaurant in 1993 and I worked at lunchtime. It was very crowed everyday for lunch with people ordering the "supersize" drinks and French fries. It was stressful filling all these orders, but I did it no problem. We were right across the street from a hospital and I couldn't believe that the doctors and nurses were coming over eating big mac supersize meals and I saw them lighting up cigarettes when they walked out the door. I think a lot of people have missed the super-sized option since they ended it, because a lot of people ordered that. 🍔🍟

But they weren't in there every single day, so it's o.k. to eat something fun sometimes. I'm sure it was hard to resist, being right across the street from the hospital. They walked over. Yes, saw them eating french fries and puffing on the cigarettes. Hopefully they quit smoking before it harmed their health terribly.
The good ol' times. There used to be ads in which doctors recommended certain brands of cigarettes. Tasty! Eating at McDonald's and enjoying a cigarette after having a Big Mac and a McFlurry. I'm loving it! 😍
I totally remember the fried pies. They were great! I also remember the cheese danish. I’ve tried many many other cheese danish from bakeries all over the US. Never did find one that was a good as McDonalds. I wonder who baked them?? Anybody know?

My favorite guilty pleasure McDonald's menu item was the mushroom and Swiss Angus third pounder. I've rarely eaten there since they dropped it.

I'm old, so I remember basically all of this. However, the one I still miss the most, and still would love for them to revisit, is the steak sandwich. Beef, onions, steak sauce. I miss that sauce the most!

I miss their danishes on the breakfast menu in the 70's and early 80's. They were steamed and oh so soft n flakey. I'd love to see them return, especially the cheese danish. Yum! Also, BRING BACK THE SNACK WRAPS NOW!! My fav was the grilled chicken with honey mustard. So much flavor in such a small package.

I remember many of this items. I eat at McDonald's every once in awhile. I ate there alot in high school. The McRib was always my favorite. I was always suprised that it hasn't been permanently added to the menu instead of just a seasonal thing.
It is surprising its not permenantly part of the menu because every time they bring it back it does really well. I guess that is part of the appeal though. Thank you for watching my friend!
The one I worked at had the Rib Junior for a couple years in the late 90's. They never sold, the same ones sat in the same old nasty, burned sauce all day. If they were too bad occasionally they'd get cooked to order but I was generally the only one who cared about quality in any way, and even then I barely cared. After a while I started to resent the slobs coming in to eat that poison.
Anyway, the Rib Jr. was a mini version of the ribwich served on the small hamburger bun. Same meat, same sauce, but nobody ever ate them. I think people really liked the long bun, and the rarity of the ribwich.
My understanding is it has to do with pork cost. When the cost of pork is low they bring it back. Also FOMO. They take it away so people can miss it and then they bring it back. Part of their strategy.

McDonald's got in alot of trouble in the first years of the mcrib. It's illegal to sell kangaroo meat in the United States.
I remember in the 80's they had huge hot cream cheese danishes on the breakfast menu. I used to love those. The grilled onions, steak, egg and cheese biscuit was outstanding too. It was a huge delicious brick of grease and yumminess.
When the Chicken Selects came out I gave them a try and loved them so much I stopped eating the Chicken McNuggets (which I was a big fan of) and ate those every time instead. They seemed to be a lot classier to me and tasted a lot better compared to the greasy-like McNuggets. Plus they came with classy sauces like Ranch and Honey Mustard. I was very bummed out when the Chicken Selects were discontinued and reluctantly went back to the McNuggets. I miss them a lot.
Honestly the Chicken Selects were spot on. When McD's does something right they blow it out of the park. Same with there homestyle burgers
They were definitely better than the McNuggets, but I remember them being a bit too pricey.
Try your freezer section of your local grocery stores. Chicken fingers love the lightly seasoned southern style .

In Michigan they still have the breakfast burritos. They never left but for breakfast bagels left when covid started and just came back
In Connecticut the breakfast burrito also stayed. I always get them and even though they come with a packet of picante sauce, I add a packet of fire sauce from another fast food store. It’s so delicious!
I worked at Mcdonalds right about the time the fajita meat when from having ro be cooked on the grill to being precooked and then the fajitas where assembled and wrapped and then just microwaved….. i used to snag them and eat them cold
The fajitas were great.
The hot and spicy McChicken is still available at many locations. I am an over the road trucker, and visit many markets. Also, most locations still have hot mustard sauce as well. As always I enjoyed your video!

@@adriannadd1983 I'm in New Orleans and we've always, to this day, had the hot n spicy McChicken. Growing up I actually never knew there was such thing as a "plain" McChicken lol. We also have the hot mustard. I actually just got some from a McDonald's yesterday.
Loved the Big N Tasty, the cheddar melt, the McDLT, deep-fried pies, and the little Chocolatey Chip cookies! Also, does anyone remember the summer burger? I don’t remember what it was called - it was just a summer special sometime in the ‘00s, and it was a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and bread-and-butter pickle chips.
They used to have cherry pie turnovers as a dessert item. Sometimes you will see apple pie turnovers still, but never the cherry (which of course was my favorite).
Now there just baked goo. They were better when they were fried.
Did they have a high cherry pie turnover rate or was it reasonably priced
I miss when McDonald's had strawberry sundaes they don't sell that where I live anymore. Also the white cheddar onion burger. The frozen strawberry lemonade drink. And one year at Christmas they had a peppermint McFlurry which had candy cane pieces in it and was soooo good I keep hoping they'll bring it back at Christmas some year but they haven't yet!
I loved their strawberry sundaes. Also, I remember a few years ago, McDonald’s had some yummy frozen strawberry lemonade. I really enjoyed that.

Out of all the discontinued items, I don't understand how the hot dogs failed. Hamburgers and hot dogs are sold at other American fast food chains including Nathan's Famous, Sonic and Five Guys. How did McDonald's fail at marketing hot dogs? One thing I noticed is that the permanent menu items haven't changed in years. I'm starting to think most customers don't like change at McDonald's. They want the same menu year after year.

According to other sources. Ray Kroc didn’t like the hotdog because he didn’t want to sell a item people couldn’t understand the ingredients of. “Certain irony there with todays items”. It has been brought back a few times after his death, but the demand just isn’t there.

i remembered it back in the day i would get an ice cream cone and my brother 2 hot pies and we would take turns put pieces of the pie into the vanilla ice cream

I remember basically all of these items. The only thing that wasn’t mentioned is the snack wraps that came out the same time as the angus burgers. They had the deluxe wrap, the mushroom swiss wrap(my favorite), the Big Mac wrap and the chicken wrap in either grilled or regular. It was quietly discontinued after the Angus burgers ran the course of their promotion
In my area, the chicken versions of those wraps hung around until just a few years ago.
I actually miss the fruit and walnut salad I used to always get it with like two cheeseburgers
Here in Canada, that Angus burger was legit good. Lots of quality toppings to choose from and good beef. When they launched it, they would actually have someone come and do table service bringing it out on a wooden tray with a small metal basket of fries. A few times they even got our fountain drinks and ketchup. My buddy and I called them the Success Burger because you knew you’ve made it when you went to mcds and they were doing table service.

As a former McDonald's employee, we were always told to send in ideas to the test kitchen and see how they would work out in a limited market. Being from Philly, the steak sandwich would never fly here but we did bring back the son of Mac for a limited time for the 25th anniversary.
We call that a McDouble dressed as a Mac. They know whatcha mean in Ohio lol. Daily Doubles too.
I knew a store in Kansas City that brought back the McFeast, Strawberry Shortcake McFlurry, & Eggs Benedict McMuffin for the year of the 50th.
They even did a deal where you could get a McFeast, medium fries & drink AND the McFlurry for $3.25, $6.50 for the large version. They had the biggest sales in KC for a WHOLE FREAKING YEAR!
They even tried to return the famed Szechauan Sauce, but this was denied by upper management for fear of the chaos it would likely cause among Rick & Morty fans.
Hot n spicy is still served here in TN, as well as hot mustard sauce. I miss the big n tasty, salad shakers, and the chicken wraps they used to sell.

What I really miss from the McDonald's menu is... reasonably priced food and functioning ice cream/shake machines. I don't eat at McDonald's very often, but when I do, I'm always amazed at the price of my order and never surprised to hear "I'm sorry, our ice cream/shake machine is not working."
I'm not sure about other regions in the US, but the Hot Mustard dipping sauce is available in Georgia. I get it every time I order Chicken McNuggets.
I had never heard of the McLobster Roll, until I visited New Hampshire, several years ago and decided to give it a try. I'm not a huge fan of seafood, but I tried it and it wasn't too bad.
Ice Cream machine isnt McDonalds doing its Taylor they get tons of money fixing there machines so would you stop the money flow. It hurts McDonalds more not being able to sell them
and forking all the money to taylor tech because McDonalds only allow them to work on there machines

I miss the cookies that came with Happy Meals. They were shaped like McDonald's characters.

Facts! I remember that one, I worked there too during college, and I was passing out free samples in the drive-through parking lot. I got into trouble for having one while handing them out but I lived in Arizona (hottest state in US), but I told my boss, that's how I got people to buy them... by drinking one looking refreshed! xD

@@chrisretired5379 The Shamrock makes its return every year for St.Patty's Day. The Arctic Orange will only show up in the summer months every 5 or 6 years. The Blueberry and the Banana I haven't seen since the early 80's. I don't think they were very big sellers, so McD's just sort of gave up on them. Anyway, happy hunting!

I worked for a McDonald's when we offered the salad shaker. The biggest complaint was is was less salad than the platter for more money, even though we'd pour the shaker onto a platter right in front of the customer to prove this wasn't the case. I lost track of how many of those I took home

The Pineapple Burger was something Ray Croc thought would do well on Fridays in Catholic dominated markets but decided to test it head to head with the Filet of Fish invented by one of his franchisers. The Filet of Fish won by a wide margin and the Filet of Fish was born.
McRib was my all time favourite thing to get. Was very popular when The Flintstone movie was out

In 1971 (back when the french fries were made on site out of whole potatoes, blanched & fried in beef tallow), the McDs that I worked at was an internal test-bed for corn on the cob, a 1/3 of a cob piece of corn. It was an immediate fail, as the kernels would shrivel up after just a minute in the warming bin and took too long to cook for it to be a low volume quick turn offering. It never made it to McDs menu that I know of.
I do miss the Angus burgers. They were their best burgers, ...now I have to settle for an occasional Quarter Pounder Deluxe with extra onions. 😔

Same. I liked the burger they came out with to promote Batman Forever, it was three Pattie’s with three kinds of cheese on a sesame seed style “hero” oblong bun.
Visit France and you can eat it again. It’s part of the menu at different times of the year and rotates with several different items.

In the development stage of the characters, there was Granny McDonald, a little old retired circus clown.
I was working for McDonald’s in the 90’s and remember the Hero Burger very well! It wasn’t at all a bad seller, in fact it sold very well! The reason for its discontinuation was two reasons, one being at the time McDonald’s had a promotion called “The burger of the month” and the other being it was a tie-in promotion for a film, and like it’s namesake meant that each and every single month meant that a new concept was introduced. McDonald’s didn’t ever release the item afterwards due to cost reasons.
I loved the fajitas! They only cost about $1.35 in my town and a customer on my paper route always gave me a coupon book of 50 $1 McDonald’s coupons for Christmas so I rarely paid full price for them!

Oh man this video brings back memories! As a former McDonald's employee I remember some of these items. Fun fact: The Super Hero Burger was brought back in Canada around 2002-2004 and was called the Hockey Hero Sandwich. It was essentially the same sandwich, just with a different name.
This was also branded the "Gilbert Brown burger" in Wisconsin, named for the (current at the time) Green Bay Packers football player, because it was big enough to satisfy a lineman!
What killed the "full size" pizza, was you had to turn the box sideways to hand it through the drive-thru window. They toyed with special parking and an employee would "run" it out to your car. They designed a new window with a bank teller style drawer, but it was cost prohibitive for one item. On most of the other items you mention the bottom line was the "supply chain". The sheer volume of let's say lobster claw meat required globally, created cost and environmental issues. Their eternal quest for a "Whooper stopper" as they call it resulted in every lettuce, tomato, etc. combination. Only in Israel did they figure out it's the "flame broiling" that counts. Micky D's has a big ego and won't admit you gotta grill it. As Burger King quipped, "It's why people don't have backyard frying pans".
If it took 11 minutes to cook, would they tell you to pull into a waiting spot anyway? Unless they had them under the heating lamp ready to go?
All of the McDonald's here in Canada now have multiple special parking spots where the employee runs out your order to the car (since eating inside was closed because of covid).
It was a look at the future! They knew we would have ordering apps on our phones!
