Yakuza 1's PS2 version has a romhack called Yakuza Restored which completely retranslated the entire game and puts the Japanese audio back in, it's quite a cool way to experience (or re-experience) the first game.
Well, Y0 is by far my favorite. Perfect for an origin story. Y1 is also great, especially if you're coming from Y0. Although it still holds up on its own. Y2 story... well... I liked it first, they definitely spiced up some stuff to create a more complex plot. However, (personal opinion) there is one single character that their development went down the drain in the second half and ruined the ending for me. RGG yeeted them out in the next game for a reason, apparently. And Y3, an average Yakuza story, but I'll never forget that two of my favorite characters were done dirty. Haven't played the rest of them yet.
I remember playing Y2 when I was too impatient to wait a few months for Kiwami 2 to come out. Definitely don't regret it, the Kiryu host minigame was hilarious
If yakuza 2 was kiryu getting a new shinji, a new nishiki, and a new yumi and had the beginning play out with kiryu and nu-shinji trying to get a ring for nu-yumi only for nu-nishiki to shoot dojima 2.0 and have kiryu take the fall again and basically repeat what yakuza 1 did, even to the point of having a clone of kazama called Joji for some reason, and had gameplay that was just the same collection stuff that yakuza 1 had with very minor changes, then I think the people who dislike totk wouldn't like yakuza 2.
I played Yakuza 1&2 after 0 and had a blast. I'm trying to spread the word of the PS2 titles so I turned my game footage into "cinematic experiences" on my channel. So people can experience the narratives without having to play them. I also changed things such as scene transitions, cut out alot of fluff. (Nobody wants to see Kiryu try and get into the Mahjong parlor for 20 minutes). They are projects I'm really proud of actually. Editing the fight scenes was also fun. I actually grew more appreciation for the ps2 titles as time goes on and prefer to return to them over the kiwami's. Kiwami feels like diet 0 and Kiwami 2 suffers from alot of 6's issues.
I never played neither 1 or 2 (at least not to completion, I hated them because of how SLOW is to play. Loading times are attrocious) So, this series of videos are great.
I'm afraid you forgot the main reason why Yakuza 2 i more appealing to replay than Y1: The phenomenal optimisation when it comes to loading the fights; in Y2 it only takes some seconds whike in Y1 it takes about... half a minute! It very similiar to Shenmue 2 compared to the OG, it is MASSIVELY improved.
I believe it is canon that the bomb went off at the end of the game. My personal theory is the game Devs were like "yeah that's how the series ends" and corporate was like "wtf are you doing we need to make 700 of these games'" that is the only explanation for that ending they can't of unironically wrote that thinking it was a good ending
I kinda understand what you're saying about Like a Dragon not knowing how to follow up past game stories. I'm playing chronologically and i'm currently at Kiwami 2, but the Kiwami games are a remake AND a sequel to Yakuza 0 but still, so they put side content to reference the events of '88. But it's true, RGG doesn't know how to continue character arcs. They either make them disappear or continue them without going anywhere. Take Kiryu, they sidelined almost every major character in Y6 so the story was focused on him, his character arc was complete, they made a new protagonist and still, KIRYU STILL KEEPS APPEARING. Not that i don't love the character, i would be happy if he showed up from time to time, but the next two games he's going to be a protagonist. There's nothing more to tell in Kiryu and they still keep bringing him back.
Yakuza zero does a whole lot for the perception of Yakuza 1s story. Yakuza zero almost feels like it exists to explain who the like 15 people who die in Yakuza 1 actually are. For the most part I only care about the characters because they were in zero. It's so reliant on Yakuza zero for me that honestly I had a way bigger reaction to shinmano's death than I did to yumis.
I actually love how RGG make each games somewhat stand-alone story-wise. It's so easy to get confused with long-running stories but RGG's games are mostly stand alone story. You can pretty much jump in on any game and enjoy that (except for 6). It's unique and I love it. Also disagree with your statement on women characters ended up needing man to help them. Why should it be a problem? Kiryu need help too in lots of situation. Makoto, Kaoru, Haruka, Mikiko, Yasuko, Mirei Park, Seong-hui, Saeko, Kiyomi, Saori, Amasawa, Sawa, Oryo and Yuki are all good characters. This series deal with criminal underworld so it makes sense that the focus is much more centered on men. Good characters don't need to be always strong who always go by the type of "don't need help/no man" like that. Date, for example, is a good character in the series, even though he messed up a lot and needing Kiryu's help over and over again. If the only criteria for good female characters is just be strong physically, that's one dimensional. Good characters have flaws and are not perfect
I agree with this so much. Snow even goes on to say that only women screw up in this series while showing Rikiya, who died because Kiryu screwed up. Kaoru throughout all the game wanted to find her family and to be with them, and during the finale she's heading towards Ryuji because Kiryu told her he wouldn't stop until either him or Ryuji went down. How do you NOT want her to get involved on that, when Ryuji is the last living relative she has?

The better equivilent of yakuza 1 vs yakuza 2 is OOT and MM since those games were exactly what you described, and they were a year apart like yakuza 1 and 2 were. If totk was released a year after botw then people would've loved it, but instead it took 6 years, the entire development time of BOTW which included things like a new engine, new art style, new mechanics, etc. But totk didn't even do a fraction of that.

If I remember correctly, the original Sayama VA was a toxic woman which RGG didn't like, so they tried to write the character out of the story so that they don't have to work with her ever again. I could be wrong though.
its obvious that you're into the kh series too do you think you might do a video on the games? yakuza and kh are prob two of my all time fav gaming series'
I like this review, except for the part about Sayama and how RGG writes women. It's not because you're wrong about that, it can definitely be a problem sometimes. But the biggest example of a man being a constant fuckup is on-screen for most of the runtime, and he just so happens to wear red and grey.
Ye like yakuza 1 and 2 came out nearly exactly a year apart. In the time it took nintendo to make totk they went from skyward sword to botw. In 6 years they made the entirety of all the lore in botw, they made the new engine, art style, characters, models, coding, weapons and entire gameplay. But in 6 years from botw to totk all they did was add crumbs of sky areas, a couple new models, the exact same gameplay and even tried to reuse a ton of weapons too. Even the underground area was literally just a computer generated inversion of the top, it's not even something they hand made like they did with the original map when they were making botw.
I disagree on Kaoru Sayama. 1. She's obsessive to a fault - she became a detective purely to discover her origins. There's just a lot of emotion surrounding that topic. The game doesn't hide it. 2. She puts up a facade to deal with manly men. She's good at it, and quite strong, but she's not a big tough Yakuza man who can punch through emotional pain. Maybe the game is a slight bit sexist if we want to create some power ranking... but during one of its better moments it's also saying it's good to let your hair down and be a bit girly sometimes for happiness' sake, so that's nice. 3. Relating back to 1. Even if she can be a tough girl, there's going to be one touchy subject: her family origins. And without spoiling, she discovers some wild shit. Then imagine that you're dealing with two mentally ill macho men who are on suicide missions to prove who is the biggest baddest dragon in Japan. Like seriously, even stoic Kiryu is just kind of nuts; he's self-sacrificial to a fault, which is something that angers Sayama during sad jazzy rain scene. 4. So given all of the above, it's not that crazy she went out on her own, attempting to reason with manly macho man. While reckless, I wouldn't call it completely irrational nor is it so out of character given how much Kaoru has sacrificed just to discover who her family is.
In a RGG2 Parody, there is a running joke that she is bipolar and only knows how to do things when it's convenient for the situation but then just forgets everything

I recently replayed in my ps2 and wow i still love the game while kiwami 2 i don't think i'll ever replay it, it's just not as good as OG 2. Just my dumb opinion
Most of the female characters are good characters, in my eyes. Besides, these games revolve around the yakuza, an organization that doesn´t allow women to join directly, what were you expecting? However, now that the yakuza are no more, we can see more women emerging, as we´ve already seen.
Wow I wonder why the extremely good looking and interesting support character Kashiwagi isn't in another canon game after 3? Would it be because he (spoilers) died? Oh wait nevermind, he's in 7. SEGA can just decide characters aren't dead anymore. So bring back Ryuji Goda.
To be fair to sayama going to talk to her biological brother to convince him to stop probably wasn't that bad an idea, she just didn't count on the fact that kiriyu has the same tattoo as ryuji so they have to fight to the death for some reason. Also that Terreda is a psychic who arranged everything from the start alongside the other guy who was barely in the game and showed up last minute to claim the credit
I feel so bizarre when I see people praise Yakuza 2 and it’s remake. They are easily the worst yakuza games for me. The story is nonsensical and impossible to care about, and all you do gameplay wise throughout the story (and most sub stories) is walk between the same two places over and over again so rgg can claim the game is really long when it’s really all just padding. The game is WAY too long for what’s actually in there. I will say that I really enjoy the combat in both versions but I straight up couldn’t finish the original because of how exhausted I was at the tedium of the main objectives.
my favourite line from daigo to kiryu was "you're yakuza two, kiryu-san"
I need my Yakuza 2, dallas
i was furious when rgg retconned that vital to the plot scene, and instead made Daigo say "You're extreme 2, Kiryu"
"you're yakuza, and i am yakuza too"
kiryu uses keyboard and mouse because he is not a real yakuza

Most of the female characters are good characters, in my eyes. Besides, these games revolve around the yakuza, an organization that doesn´t allow women to join directly, what were you expecting? However, now that the yakuza are no more, we can see more women emerging, as we´ve already seen.
Wow i wonder why the extremely good looking and interesting villain of yakuza 2 isnt in another canon game, would it be because he (spoilers)
Died?
Yeah but they could’ve just not killed him because they killed him in a dumb way
Wow I wonder why the extremely good looking and interesting support character Kashiwagi isn't in another canon game after 3? Would it be because he (spoilers) died?
Oh wait nevermind, he's in 7. SEGA can just decide characters aren't dead anymore. So bring back Ryuji Goda.
Bro why is everyone acting like Ryuji Goda survived , bro is dead at the end of yakuza 2 lolll, he is never returning
I´d have to heavily disagree, we have way more well written female characters than not
This video turned into "Yakuza is for men" in the halfway through lol
i hit dislike
I can’t believe you’ve done this

Cause BOTW was bad :)
