When I discovered Math Hoffa & the crew, I watched the short pieces. When I saw the segments with likes of Red Alert, Fat Joe, and Young Guru, I watched in 20min blocks. The idea that an artist has to only be talking about righteous subjects to be considered conscious is both misleading and inaccurate. 2Pac was definitely "conscious". His duality doesn't negate that. Wu-Tang,Nas,Styles P, Kendrick Lamar,J.Cole,Saigon, even Jay Z. Kanye at certain points throughout the years. You can't tell me these are not "conscious" emcees. They articulate their lives and thoughts at the highest level. People need to give artists space to grow, experiment, and be versatile. A truly conscious person is well rounded and versed in different ways of conveying their messages.⤵️ Definition of Conscious: Characterized by or having an awareness of one's environment and one's own existence, sensations, and thoughts. synonym: aware. Mentally perceptive or alert;awake. Capable of thought, will,or perception. Conscious definition is - having mental faculties not dulled by sleep, faintness,or stupor : awake. Conscious definition, aware of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.
Yes, Pac touched on many conscious issues in his music but when an artist has the number of hardcore gangster lyrics as Pac did, I don't think you can put him in the same conscious lane as a Common or a Mos Def. Pure conscious Mc's keep violence to a minimum
@@Topsey2000 You don't get it...Conscious is a state of mind, state of being...Common and Mos Def's consciousness isn't the same as Paris and Public Enemy's consciousness. If you want to criticize Pac's ARTISTRY, fine, but that doesn't mean he wasn't conscious.
For me Tribe was everything and when Native Tongues joined forces it was a movement. Plus being from Queens gave you the sense of pride in the borough. Queens All Day!..
What homeboy was saying about the "nature" of business shouldn't be fair is wrong! Business should be fair...its called "operating in Good faith" that is a legal term...and also "fiduciary responsibility" is also a legal term!!
Man this is fucking amazing, Q Tip is by FAR super dope. If I ever go to NY, I'm visiting this shop, they can at least line up my beard with my bald self. Lol
First of all....the old..."WELL THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS" position is a weak one....it's a lazy one. How many slaves suggested being free and were shot down by other slaves saying, well this is the way of the world? Imagine if they accepted that. Dude with the Airbender charm on his wrist is buggin.
The Powers that Be, who made up the rules as they went along...and skimmed wayyy off the top and starved our Talented people out for decades of Black Music royalties and residuals...and never wrote a song or made a beat...owe Black Artists Hundreds of Billions of dollars. #NoCAP

My issue with the guy, I think his name was Mecca, is that he truly expects these young dudes to know the ins and outs of the business side fresh out of highschool. Especially when hip hop was young and these dudes was coming up. You can't expect a young 18 Q-Tip to know this type of stuff, unrealistic in every way shape and form. They didn't even sniff that type of knowledge in them schools. Where these dudes get this type of knowledge coming into a business meeting, come on bruh. With power comes responsibility period. The business culture is created by the individuals that create it and is in control and them execs knew these young men coming in to these meetings knew nothing about the business practices they were conducting. It is only after years, even decades are we catching this stuff after trial and error.
Word, if you talking about ol boy to Hoffa’s immediate right side. He comes across like all he cares about is the bag and not the culture. I’m sure he might be a solid dude but he just come off wrong making excuses for these greedy execs.
Thats why they need to get LAWYERS but they think they know everything and its something called MARKET VALUE. He’s also doing that from a position of defense and saying at the end of the day it’s the fault of the artist for getting jerked and not the labels. That’s why Q-Tip was saying that these labels should be looking out for these artists and making sure they’re well informed because without these artists, these labels wouldn’t be making money in the first place so why even jerk em? Another good ep! #Qtiptheabstract
yo Mecca you gotta relax!!!
Biggups to Math
“Work it Out” is a dope underrated Tip song. “Renaissance Rap” and it’s remix are ill too!
Mannnnnn 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 leave him alone
Glad to see one of my childhood idols spit some game.. Icon.. Rest in Power.. Phife Dawg👑💯.. ATCQ Forever.. Q-TIP.. LEGEND 👑 💯.. Fantastic interview. I hope these up coming artists are tunning into this episode.. Congrats on the award 👑.. Well deserved 👑💯
ODB beat Q-Tip in a rap battle! Too funny! This interview is really informative and gives you a peek inside the Rap game through the eyes of Q-Tip. Very f'n nice.
Dude has all the answers. Took the fun completely outta the interview.
lol word up
Immediately aggravating. I wanted to lay hands on him for even coming at TIp with that shit.
Hes a know it all, just because you sound intelligent doesn't make you intelligent lol, q tip has been around the block more than a few times. What he's sharing is what he learned through first hand experience. Ol dude just had filler words for everything, hella annoying
Q Tip: " You on point Phife"
Phife Dawg: "All the time Tip"
Great interview🔥 it was dope to see Q Tip! Queens🗽
I freaking love this show. You always bring on amazing artist and the conversing is always dope!
Keep on killing it Math you one of the best! Shout out to Q Tip for being one of the realest!!!!
Record companies are scared of a hip hop union..But it’s definitely needed.
@17:48. This is what separates Math's interviews from others. Most would skip over him saying that he grew up near Run n LL. Others would break the flow and ask a direct question. Math casual keeps Tip going down that lane of elaborating more
All flowers to Q-Tip.....he is undeniably a very integral part of hip hop and this is the best interview I've watched in a long time about hip hop...... the first versus I've ever seen was Swizz vs.Timbaland......not JustBlaze
I would rather watch this over any Vlad TV interview .Much Respect to this Podcast.Keep Going!!!!!
When I discovered Math Hoffa & the crew, I watched the short pieces. When I saw the segments with likes of Red Alert, Fat Joe, and Young Guru, I watched in 20min blocks. The Mc Serch was like an 1hr, I split that. THIS one, with someone whom I have marveled and idolized over since age 10, watched it the WHOLE way thru. That's how much Q-Tip means to me and I'm sure to millions of others. Thank you Abstract for EVERTHING.
Dude with the shades in the back cracked me up when he brought up Vivrant Thing. So blunt! haha
This episode was a front row seat to witness artistic genius on display. Thanks to Math, Q and the crew.
The most important man Hip Hop has. Without him, Hip Hop would not be what it is today. He's been part of the most iconic albums and influenced everyone on the way.
Mr Mecc is ON THE MONEY, when it came to his observation on the Lil’s… 🎯
Salute to Math for interviewing Q-Tip. So good to see you guys. Peace.
Love love love how Math gives our legends their flowers. I loved this interview you should look into doing this on a large scale for students of the art.
The best was the end. The embrace and respect as black men and women we need that more than ever now. Music provides a solution in culture in ways that music can in other cultures. 🤲🏾
I think I’m gonna re-edit a version of this episode with no Mecca so we can just hear Tip talking to Math.
😂😂😂💯
I would argue that Mecca brings part of the chemistry that made this conversation so amazing.
Yeah Mecca jumped off the roof here when he should've played that back. The train was running was smooth until he jumped in.
Honestly bc it was a bit rude and arrogant. BOY he was in the business when ya goofy butt was in middle school.
I nominate you for producer of the show 👏
This might be the best one I've seen. I really felt this one a lot. Shout out to Math. He has grown so much in his craft.
The idea that an artist has to only be talking about righteous subjects to be considered conscious is both misleading and inaccurate.
2Pac was definitely "conscious".
His duality doesn't negate that.
Wu-Tang,Nas,Styles P,
Kendrick Lamar,J.Cole,Saigon,even Jay Z.
Kanye at certain points throughout the years.
You can't tell me these are not "conscious" emcees.
They articulate their lives and thoughts at the highest level.
People need to give artists space to grow, experiment, and be versatile.
A truly conscious person is well rounded and versed in different ways of conveying their messages.⤵️
Definition of Conscious:
Characterized by or having an awareness of one's environment and one's own existence, sensations, and thoughts. synonym: aware.
Mentally perceptive or alert;awake.
Capable of thought,will,or perception.
Conscious definition is - having mental faculties not dulled by sleep, faintness,or stupor : awake.
Conscious definition,aware of one's own existence, sensations,thoughts, surroundings,etc.
Great comment and well said.
All facts 💯
Agreed
Nothing sucks the air out of a NY barbershop like mentioning Tupac
"That's why I don't be coming outside man" 👑
What homeboy was saying about the "nature" of business shouldn't be fair is wrong! Business should be fair...its called "operating in Good faith" that is a legal term...and also "fiduciary responsibility" is also a legal term!!
I think he was more emphasizing reality & s
fairness would be relegated to “in theory”/“on paper” but I could be wrong, that’s just how I took it tho
@@gemcitychico the "reality" is Rappers are still getting "jerked" with in these deals....by this time you deserve it!!
Is that why Q was referencing the contract?
Q Tip's presence had Mecca nervous and talkative. 🗣🙄 😄
This conversation had me mesmerized.
Q Tip has always been such a great Hip Hop being. Salute to him bro. Yo, Math is doing alot of sht never done B4. Fire 🔥!
Man this is fucking amazing, Q Tip is by FAR super dope. If I ever go to NY, I'm visiting this shop, they can at least line up my beard with my bald self. Lol
As you can tell by the profile pic. Bonita Applebum was the first hiphop song that grabbed my attention
You doing something crazy Hoffa. I ain’t been rockin with these pods since Taxstone/CombatJack
something powerful brotha man. Peace
#NoCAP
@@TGUTTAExiT21 You are absolutely correct.
I watched 40 min.. Great interview.
♾ *A Tribe Called Quest* ♾
TH4NK YOU 4 all your heART and inspiration.
Yall are one of the reasons I learned how to express myself through music. Now my son, half afro half euro mut is on his own journey as a young recording artist. The vision, education, self confidence, self reflection etc he gets from exploring Hip Hop, lyricism, production and recording is priceless. I stole the 2nd Tribe album on casette from Longs Drugs in high school. Changed my life. Sorry for robbing $1 or so you guys would have spilt three ways. I bought album 1,3,4 and the recent Thank u 4 yor service one. They all will be enjoyed forever. R.I.P. Phife Dog. Thank you. Sincerely,

🍻🦁🍻
Wonderful and insightful interview from a true NYC legend. Keep up the great content Math and team. Peace from the UK.
This was one of the best interviews I ever seen. Intelligent conversation with good representation of what Hip Hop truly is 💯
Q TIP THE GOAT KEEP COMING WITH GREAT GUESTS MATH!! LOVE THE SHOW!!!
This was pure flames!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
He opened my eyes. Idk
Thats why they need to get LAWYERS but they think they know everything and its something called MARKET VALUE. They can't sign a contract and then when they spend all the money want to blame the record company. Q-Tip saying the contracts were not "Fair". Fair according to who? Mecca was speaking the truth.
@@souloshinobi7307 he comes off wrong to you because he is CHALLENING your Record companies are Shady narrative. Then the first thing you do is question is ethics instead of addressing the specifics they were speaking about.
@@urbanflavorz quit ass kissing. He speaks from the position he does because he’s part of something that always gets questioned yet comes off as the guy who tries to look out for his artists and make sure they’re well informed. I’ll always question the ethics of a person, man or woman that makes excuses for shady behavior. Fuck you mean? Ya boy even said to always ask questions so you wrote all that stupid shit for nothin’..
Q Tip pulled up on me in 2005, I was playing a track i just made a track, playing in my car in Hollywood, and had me bring more tracks the next day, I missed his deadline, I took a batch the day after, he came back for them after I just dropped my CD off at a Studio he was working in. He called me back after hearing it, told me I was nice, Keep working, you nice Bro. He's a real one for that!
Man so sorry I missed this one. Tip is definitely one of the greatest. Pure icon. Keep up the great work Math, God bless and stay up.✌️❤️🔥
Apparently Hammer agreed with Tip because not long after that, he dropped the MC from his name. He knew he wasn't a lyricist. He was cool with being a pop entertainer.
Q-Tip definition of living hip hop legend!
Shout out to Hoffa for learning how to interview and making guests comfortable so they open up.
We see your grind, sir!
When Hoffa looks at the camera i swear he is looking at just me as I agree with his thoughts in my head.🤣
Hoffa got a rep for being a bully but watching these episodes shows me he a intelligent and stand up guy salute big dawg...
Welcome to Brooklyn
@@printsbydavid7042 lol classy response
Did anybody else see or sense the subtle tension between Tip and the nigga with the glasses to the right of Math??? He was jabbin at Tip all interview, and Tip basically had to silence him to talk!!!
He mad jealous of Q tip success on da low
Its the leader of the mission and I got the goods here
Never on the left cuz the rights my good ear
