Great insights into the nuances of Pallavi and SB is also putting forward a great question to think- why should every Carnatic musician sing Pallavis in the first place? It should be a choice made by the musician depending upon their own personal attraction towards that skill and the motivation to work for it. Why shouldn’t there be subdivisions in Carnatic music artists like Pallavi artists, or Padam artists etc, who are specializing in specific genres? Why is everybody expected to master Pallavi singing to be considered a ‘full-fledged’ and a complete artist and who says so? People who can do Pallavis should do it but there should also be spaces for people who do not genuinely want to do it and want to focus mainly on raagam and other melodic aspects. Just because somebody can or can’t do Pallavis doesn’t make them any superior or inferior. And I think that’s what SB is suggesting at 24:25 - Do things that make you feel comfortable and be yourself, and if at all you want to do Pallavi, do it properly. But be open if you really can’t or don’t want to do it and that’s no problem at all. Such an inspiring person who never gave into any dogmatism!
Thank you for sharing this precious lecture and music. In the raagamalika swaram part, what is the raaga that comes after Nagaswarali and before surutti? It sounds a little like Kumudhakriya, but has shudda madhyamam too..
Apologies, but there is no information about the accompanists in the cassette that was used for transfer and I am not able to say for sure who it could be. Please feel free to take guesses and thanks so much for listening. 😊🙏
