The first generation R170 SLK looks better as time goes by. It has a timeless design with superb engineering. A classic car for sure.
I agree to a degree, the car has so many problems. Search any forum and you will see. PSE, K40 Relay, Lighting issues, on the outside it looks nice but t inside it's full of ticking timebombs.

Classic car, I wouldn't say that, they don't mention the rust problem these cars had .
I have this car, it has a unique design, beautiful, but it's horrible problems wise, all electrical / electronic in nature.
@@camdelahuerta700bought one brand new in 1999 and got rid of it two years later. really liked it but it had issues straight from the factory, which, in fairness were all fixed in the dealer at no cost. In the first year it was in the garage 4 times. I didn’t really mind as, again, it was under warranty and was fixed at no cost and we had another car so it was little to no inconvenience.
I have an SLK since 2001 , now 18 years old and performing faultlessly. The only issue is the interior paint. Wonderful car

Me too. 1998 not ever an issue. Best car I have ever owned. Interior paint was fixed by an eBay purchase. I sponged the dark gray rubber paint on and looks new again. Mines in yellowstone... Bright yellow. See ya.
Volico / VLC paint £28 on eBay , I have the 1997 230 kompressor in mint condition, did have the common paint peel on the centre console, with the above paint , perfect again
I just removed all my interior pieces with this problem. Stripped the coating with paint stripper, and repainted and clear coat. Like new again.
The SLK R170 is a great car, reliable engines, amazing vario roof and superb roadster design! 100% collector!!

this is a truly informative video for me, having inherited a 2004 SLK 230 Special Edition last year. I knew next to nothing about this car's features before watching this. I didn't even know that the front of the ashtray flipped down for coin storage! Fun to drive, and very nice on extended roadtrips, too.

you can get an r170 for like 2k now - amazing to experience this car before everything goes electric

The 170 makes little problems.
Main Problem is the rust.
A thick layer of corrosion protecters is vital.

@@Scherling12 Are you possibly from Germany? Your grammar at least fits in to that pattern. Anyways, I was just making fun of the low mileage, I know many slk owners only taking it for a ride in bright sunshine and good days.

I bought a 230k for my wife, (8yrs ago) the most reliable, robust, beautiful car and a such pleasure to drive, if want to service yourself, its so easy also, its a true classic (almost) SO BUY one, before the prices sky rocket u wont regret
I bought the 230 full service history, two owner car with 102k on the clock , no rust , and love it she’s 23 years old 1997 and is definitely a modern classic
The perfect mix of a 1955 gullwing Mercedes and a miata.
Lovely cars, shame about the standard fit self rusting feature not shown on this video. You can actually hear the rusting process if you listen carefully on quiet winter nights.
The 1994 Crash test at 4:30 makes sense, because the final design was set in January 1993 and finalized in September 1993.

I've always wanted a SLK230 R170 since its launch back in 1996. In 2018 I came across my dream car and without hesitation I aquired this beautiful car... never been so happy.

Wife and I have a 2000 230, 5 speed, 74k miles on the clock. Great weekend car. Just put a bigger crank pulley on it and has power like it should have had from the factory. Have had no mechanical issues aside from the occasional coil pack or MAF.

Great cars, the 6 speed r170 is very rare now, only autos left.
Our 2004 R170 SLK200 kompressor is the 6-speed manual. Almost 90k miles now, still drives like new. Still makes us smile. :-)

i have silver slk. Seems like most germans were pretty boring back then because i couldnt get hands on an slk with a cool color but in good condition. Maybe ill get it a paint job some day idk

Bought this car for $3,600 and put about $2,000 in parts and cosmetics. Was able to do all the work myself and save the cash(No Mechanical Experience). Great car just learn how to DIY or pay the $$. I had a blown head gasket so I decided to go knuckles deep.

Rust is a Big Problem. My slk has a lot of rust
Not if you live where there isn't snow and road salt.. I have a 2009 SLK 350 with zero rust anywhere on it . Of course I won't drive it in the winter so that's probably why .
@@stringsattached67 Really irrelevant, as there are way different engineering standards between an R171 and the R170 engineered in the early-mid 90s. Nearly 13 years apart.
I had one, a 320slk, low ks. Nothing but trouble. Cost me $18000 the first year I had it in repairs. Nice car to drive, terribly cheap nasty plastic dashboard that peeled its soft touch skin after a few years use. Great engineering, but not a classic.
The R172 is the angel of the SLK series, I love mine. But I'd take the R170 over the R171 anytime, that one is just fugly. The 170 at least looks like a real Merc.
31:28 where's the turbo ?
SLKs do not have turbos. They have a supercharger, located under the air intake on the left side of the engine, as you're looking at it.

We had a SLK230 with full AMG body kit for 15 years! The wife loved it, it was her car after all, but I had different feelings. The style, build quality and that magic folding roof were all fabulous. However, the auto box just sucked all the power from the engine and the overall driving experience was deeply flawed. Boring and frankly dangerous as when overtaking the kick down produced a lot of noise and not much else. After being stranded on the wrong side of the road too many times I gave up overtaking in the SLK, it was safer.
Yes, makes no sense on having this car automatic. I waited 3 years to find a 6 speed one.
Turbocharged? The SLK is Supercharged! There is no turbo.

T. Versteeg kompressor is the name for the Germans use for supercharger
