That's got to be the most painful 400 meters. After running for a whole damn hour and having to sprint with a man barreling down on you. My heart would explode.
Geb has already proven himself among the greatest athletes of all-time, if not THE greatest. For him to be in his 40's and even be hanging with these two young supernovas is phenomenal.
I read your comment as "[full] marathon" when I posted last night. Either you've edited your comment since then (less likely) or I was fucking tired (more likely). lol
No worries. There are some performances by older runners that are simply amazing, this is one. Like Eamonn Coghlan running a sub-4 minute mile at age 41, or former American football great James Lofton running 47 seconds for 400 meters at age 54.
This is what Farah would have been if he'd had good runners around during his career: second best, at best. Kenenisa wasn't even at his best here, and still beat him. Farah's PBs are nowhere near the world records, nothing at XC, can't do marathon…
Mo gave beauty to the finishing - Haile's presense was grace for the race - Kenenisa nail the race with his confident and relaxed face - very rare to have such mix in a race ..
This is a king of competition I would love to watch all over again! Exiting, dramatic, enjoyable where at the end even the loser shake hand as a genuine example of sportsmanship,
Bekele was injured, and is still injured in this race as well, I just love the grin on Bekele's face while Farah struggles to catch him. Kenenisa Bekele is on a whole other level, if Bekele was in his prime Farah would get slaughtered.
Bekele is smart runner, he know the final kick of Mo Farah, very well timed to overtake and open a big gap 1km before finish line. awesome three cheetahs.
I have experienced many runs like that lol, your pumped up with a lot of fucked up shit, a mix of adrenaline, endorphines, dopamin, pure mentality and the lactic acid may motivate you, even its a struggle. Great clip! I wish you had the part prior on the downhill. Farah was 2nd, with Gebrselassie leading, and Bekele at 3rd. On a huge downhill with about a mile left, Farah being a track runner, was advised by Paula Radcliffe prior to the race to take it easy on the downhill as it punishes the quads. Bekele, a very very experienced cross country runner, took notice to the breaks by Farah and Gebrselassie, and attacked the downhill, in the process of going from 3rd to 1st and opening a huge gap. I would consider Gabreslassie as the greatest distance runner ever as he won 1500m to marathons and once holding the marathon record. Just his overall body of work. Although if Bekele can stay healthy, it will be interesting to see his marathon debut in Paris. And Mo seems to look promising in the half marathons, and will be interesting to see his marathon debut in London.

Look that smile on both athletes. That is what make african runners the best in the world. They have being running since they were child with the same smile, they run because they really like it, when you love what you do, you become the best.
After the three of them take a photo together at the end...take note that the winner Bekele turns to 3rd place finisher Haile first in total admiration and respect to shake his hand. Farah looks almost as if he had been ignored. I think Bekele is absolutely amazing and unmatched on the track and Farah is definitely no slouch but they both know that Haile is a great running legend and when such a legend stands among you....you must show respect.
It’s customary for any Ethiopian to show their elders the utmost respect let alone legend of the game, Haile, who was an inspiration and a role model for Kenenisa. So it’s only natural for him to do that
Olympic Gold medals Farah 4 Bekele 3 Gebrselassie 2 World records will eventually get broken and forgotten. Olympic golds remain forever. Farah, what a legend!
Can we appreciate that Haile is 40 years old here? He still remains my fav distance running ever. Bekele and El Gerrouj may be faster, but I Gebreselasie is my favorite. Always smiling, always positive.
With all do respect to Micheal. Mj is a baller and he is the greatest in Balling. He falls under the Tom Brady category. But running, cycling, swimming is the what I am talking about. Its a sport where we use our bodies to test our greatness and that is what I was talking about. Phelps and Haile are the greatest on that aspect.
If you run a slow race, Mo can't be beaten....the man is a great finisher. He has the speed but these guys had strength endurance that's why he'll never break the track records.
Exactly Farah can not run super fast long time like Haile in his moment or Bekele. Farah wins almost always in "slow" races because he is supe4 fast in the last metres if he is full of energy. Farah would have 0 options in 5000-10000 against a prime Bekele.
You are exactly correct, but remember, Mo ran a 2 miler in 8:03---that's two four minute miles in a row, NOT slow by any means. But Mo might be the THIRD best distance runner of all time. Oh well, only ONE person can be number one and you're right it's likely Bekele, but what use is arguing over fractions of a second? Bekele and Gabrelassie might be tied for first and Mo would--arguably be third or fourth overall. But Mo has run 26:30 for 10 km--that's smoking really, but not (obviously), as fast as 26:17! So, Jon's comment of a "slow" race, means, if you're running slower than Bekele....NO ONE is faster, but Mo's times are anything but slow...he's a damn fast runner!
yes, Mo has some quick times (never broke 26:40 for a 10,000m thought)...but i think that's most peoples complaint about Mo is he rarely goes for a quick time. Of course can't argue with his Championships results!
I love reading the comments on who of these three is the greatest. It's like arguing over whether Beethoven is better than Mozart (in classical music composing). All three of these athletes are superb and arguably three of the top five runners of all time. I enjoy watching all of them and they all are inspiring. When you compare their times, they're really damn close, that's for sure, but 12:37 IS faster than 12:39 (for 5km) so Bekele might be 0.01 percent faster/better than Haile G. Personally, I like not to focus on one race but overall history and my summary is they're all great distance runners and they all motivate me to go out and train harder.
What a historic podium: my favourite runner of all time, Gebrselassie, the fastest long distance runner of all time, Bekele, and the great champion Mo.
Mo Farah then went on to win the next 6 years of the same half marathon. In the same time Bekele went through many years of injuries, and DNFs. So would that mean Bekele is the inferior runner based on results? Oh but then yeah Bekele came back to nearly break the world record last month. They both were the greatest 5k and 10k runners of their time. Both have beaten each other at different times of their careers.
Now in 2019 Kenenisa Bekele has done it again, winning the Berlin marathon in a time that few would have believed except that Eliud Kipchoge had run a marathon around a year earlier in 2 seconds less. I had written off Bekele as far as running world class marathon times because he had dropped out a few times and had not run especially fast when he was able to finish. Even at 36 years old it's still too early to write off Bekele.
Farah just came off of a championship year where he peaked for the World Championships. He was in his fall training. Bekele didn't make the World Champs, so he could train through for this race. Don't take this race too seriously.
Haile with his age and still finishing among the best. His time was seconds away from the winner. These 3 runners are the last 10K winners in the Olympics. Haile 1996 & 2000; Bekele 2004 & 2008, Farah 2012. Nice to see Bekele back in shape again, but why did he have to block Mo Farah, forcing Mo Farah to change directions in the finishing kick? It was a legal win, but I wish he didn't resort to that trick or tactic. It could have been cleaner. I admire Mo Farah for being such a great sport.
Obviously he's British. He was raised in Britain around British culture by a British father. He may have ancestors from Somalia, but that doesn't change the man's identity. This idea that a man isn't from a certain country because of his genetic makeup is absurd & needs to stop- no one people are chained to any one piece of land on this vast earth, they are just associated with pieces of land because of their ancestors. That's it. Period.
Mckenzie William Howells was born and somalia and was naturalized as british because birts are desperate losers. that's it. period. thought mckenzie is a girl's name... hmm what a shame. guess you'll argue that society made you that way too. no solid argument. just a lot of romanticized idiocracy
Farrah died in the last 50 meters. If he would have started his kick 500 meters out, he would have died a lot earlier. He chose the right moment but the gap was just too big to close
cameron everhart Bekele is a better all around runner (track/X-country/road) but Haile might have been a better middle distance runner in his prime. Bekele never lost a 10k/X-country race that he finished when he was in his prime. Even Bekele's marathon debut is much faster than Haile's even though Haile has a better PB.
cameron everhart what makes haile the best is the extraordindary amount of years he's been a worldclass athlete. i like bekele better though, and clearly, bekele still has the 5000 and 10000m world records
thaxcutioner Bekele is not a better all around runner. Haile basically did every distance Bekele has done plus he also set marathon world records....Also the longevity and consistency of Haile's career is unmatched.
cicirunner Haile has ZERO cross-country gold medals, never won a major marathon & never won a a single medal in the marathon. Bekele has won on every surface & dominated BOTH on X-country/track like no other. He just started the marathon & run a much better time than Haile for his 1st marathon on a more difficult course. Haile was setting world records in Berlin which is the easiest/fastest marathon course. As far as longevity, how many medals did Haile win after 2003? Bekele ruptured his freakin' achilles & beat Farah when he was at his peak.
thaxcutioner en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haile_Gebrselassie check out near the bottom of the page all of the Gebrselassie World Records. FOR THE TIME HE RAN, Haile was the best far and wide. Obviously Bekele has beaten a lot of Haile's times, but during Haile's time he was dominant. Not to say Bekele isn't of course. It's like comparing Albert Pujols to Mickey Mantle. Pujols has beaten almost all of Mantle's numbers statistically, but almost all would still consider Mickey Mantle to be better of the two. Does this make sense? Obviously you could totally make an argument that Bekele is better. I just think Haile is better and I also like him more as a person as he has been trying non stop to make Ethiopia a better place!
Kenenisa Bekelle is the greatest runner of all time, any body interested to know please compare the finishing time of mo farah at his best and kenenisa bekelle at his best. not only that but also compare the time on their Olympics and world championship finals. How could anyone dare to compare a cheetah with a leopard.
It is interesting how people talk how Mo is young and unexperienced. Farah is 30 years old and Bekele is 31. 1 year is no so big of a difference. What the heck was Farah doing before 2012? If he wants to compare himself to Bekele, then he should ask himself why he did not win anything before the 2012 Olympics.
Kaliil Kaliil Respect is another story. But the two of them are not on the same level. Mo has 2 olympic gold, 3 world golds. no cross country gold. no world records. Bekele has 3 olympic gold, 5 world gold, 11 cross country gold, 3 world records. Hence, Bekele >>>>>> Mo
i know right back in then before 2011 he was surviving to finish on top three... he just took advantage of the calf injury that ruined Kenenisa for three years messing his leg.
Bekele IS the greatest distance runner of all times. If all three could be in their prime at the same time, Kenenisa will embarrass them !!! His injury really harmed his reputation badly. Hopefully that is now something of the past and he can proof he's the best by getting the half and full marathon world records as well, GO KENENISA !!
There is no question that Haile is the greatest while Bekele is the second greatest. Mo Farah is no match for Bekele. The problem with Bekele is that the Bekele brothers suffered from injuries and it affected their training. Also, Bekele was still transitioning from track and cross-country to long-distance road races.
l love the class that both Farah and Bekele showed after the finish. Smiles, shaking hands. Just plain classy.

Mckenzie William Howells was born and somalia and was naturalized as british because birts are desperate losers. that's it. period. thought mckenzie is a girl's name... hmm what a shame. guess you'll argue that society made you that way too. no solid argument. just a lot of romanticized idiocracy
Incredible performance from all athletes, and a boring comment from me!
great athlets...Nice picture...all champions...
This is Sport, andere great Sportsmans..Respekt
i never see like kenenisa bekele he is the boss of distance athlete
Un Match incredible, super mo farah, e il 40 enne??!!!! Che onore di vedere questi super campioni!
Farrah closed a five second gap in the last 400 meters....wow. If he just would have kicked up his pace 100 meters earlier
graftonreed is this a half-marathon race?
Farrah died in the last 50 meters. If he would have started his kick 500 meters out, he would have died a lot earlier. He chose the right moment but the gap was just too big to close
Haile is easily the best. Though he doesn't win here, the stats prove otherwise.
cameron everhart Bekele is a better all around runner (track/X-country/road) but Haile might have been a better middle distance runner in his prime.
Love the smiles at the end
At the end: Hi! I just finished race, lets do it again. They look like they didn't get tired!
The moment they smile to each other is priceless.
It is interesting how people talk how Mo is young and unexperienced. Farah is 30 years old and Bekele is 31. 1 year is no so big of a difference.
What the heck was Farah doing before 2012? If he wants to compare himself to Bekele, then he should ask himself why he did not win anything before the 2012 Olympics.
he beated Bekele in 2012 olympics and many other times really
Kaliil Kaliil That is the only time. Bekele has beaten him more than 10 times prior to 2012
Do you know who has the record for 5k and 10k?
both of them are the only athletes who won douple 5k 10k olympics and world champion 5k 10 at same time. Respect for both
Kaliil Kaliil Respect is another story.
Don't underestimate Farah he is a legend Sir Mo Farah
Qenenesa bekele ,, haile gebreselase Ethiopia !! My blood ,, so proud of you

that's posotion of great Mo Farah at the All-Time lists... Nice...
Without exception, the bekele has more powerful sprint than mo farah, so he just played with farah to sprint together.
David Quinn Ingan nah bekele the best of all time
i just felt like runnnning
Your full of hormones after winning/being second in a half marathon.
Haile is in his 40's, I find it unbelievable that he could run such distances in that time frame.
Bekele was just playing with him. He allowed Mo to catch up and then left him behind.
