  • Today marks a historic and poignant tribute as the province commemorates the 100th anniversary of its national war memorial. In a solemn ceremony decades in the making, the remains of an unknown soldier who died in World War I have been entombed in a new feature of the memorial. According to Veterans Canada, this tomb symbolizes Newfoundlanders and Labradorians from all branches of service who have no known grave.
"Today, after more than a hundred years, the unknown soldier that was repatriated will lay in his final resting place. Whoever he was, he fought for our freedom so that we could enjoy the simple things of life that bring us happiness. Today, we brought him home," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He added that the freedoms we enjoy today are owed to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, reminding us that our country did not come into being by accident.
