    As Smokey Bear might say to budding techs and electronics engineers alike, "only YOU can prevent resistor fires"! 🔥

    Out of curiosity,I would have liked to see how the carbon comp resistors would have failed. Thanks for the video. This is something every aspiring tech needs to see.

    Some people just gotta watch the world burn. 🔥Thanks Brad, let's honor the sacrifice these resistors made so that others can live.

    Nice one Brad and indeed very helpful. But the video title in the preview-thumbnail was so much more exciting than the real video title... 🤣

    Outstanding mate, nothing like a video to show why these things matter like mounting a resistor off the circuit board. I actually think I smelled the burning. Lol

    Agreed with the below appreciation of this video . I've done similar experiments , but you've done it more thoroughly and recorded it so nicely . Thank you from Tony

    Very informative and somewhat spectacular.
    I must say though, watching that 3watt resistor warmed me up a little (it's 2 degrees C at midday here in London today)!

    just found a resister failure that I had not seen before and did not expect to see. resister is Brn / Blk / Gry / Red, it is a 1G ohm I believe. it's Been soldered stand offish of the board so that tells me it was expected to heat up. measurement shows 200 m ohm across from it leak, I de-soldered 1 end.

    We all know Brad is good for an epic "burn" now and then, but he has outdone himself here! The only thing missing from this competition is an overloaded carbon composition resistor 🔥! The potential for deposition of conductive carbon onto circuit boards and tube sockets is a good reason why mounting carbon comp resistors from pin 1 to pin 5 across output tube sockets is a bad idea.

    Really interesting - thanks, Brad. I'd heard of fusible and flame-proof resistors but never looked into them. I'll get that sorted out quickly.

      I used the BOFA fume extractor with it's HEPA filter, so I couldn't smell a thing!
      That's the noise in the background during testing.

    Hey Brad, super cool testing and information.Had no idea they made fusible resistors..! ( newbie still and somewhat ignorant, but now I'm educated..! ) Very interesting, thanks for sharing..Ed..UK..😀

      I see them used a lot in the course of repairing 1970s and 80's vintage hifi gear. Schematics will often have an FR next to the component on the paperwork to specify that it should be a flameproof, or fusible, resistor.

    When you let the "magic smoke" out, below the Equator, which direction does it spiral? 🤔😁

    • @BradsGuitarGarage
      @BradsGuitarGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The ambient air's fluid dynamics by far outweighs the influence of the Coriolis effect.
      As is also the case with toilet flushing. But ours doesn't spin at all because we don't have 10 friggin' liters of water in there so the water touches your ballsack.
      I still don't understand why you lot do that.
      If you're so worried about skid-marks, change your bloody diet. LOL!

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BradsGuitarGarage , I use low-water toilets in my home; occasionally I have to flush twice, but so what? I have a 300 foot deep well, but I'm careful not to waste water, which is "the new oil", as they say. As new subdivisions are built within a one mile radius, some of my neighbors have had to redrill their wells more deeply. As for my *huevos*, my "dead meat sack", everybody knows that things hang a bit lower as you age, and I adjusted the toilet mechanism for less standing water in the bowl. I don't like it when my "tube" is idling too cold, and an overly full porcelain throne really puts a damper on things! 😖

      @@retread1083 , maybe I'd like it if it was a TOTO toilet that uses a jet of warm water to rinse you, and blow dries your nether regions afterwards. I've never seen one here in the US but they're quite popular in Japan. Still not sure if I like the overall concept! (One of the more interesting and unusual books I've read is "The Big Necessity ---- the wonderful world of human waste and why it matters" by Elizabeth Rose George, a history of sewage and sanitation systems, toilet design, composting waste to make biogas, and the problems posed by open defecation.....yes, I'm a little weird!).

    Probably get a blank look if you asked for those in Jaycar; seems that Wagner have them

    • @BradsGuitarGarage
      @BradsGuitarGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      These particular ones were from Wagner (actually, WES, the wholesale outlet).
      They are a bit shady with component specs, which is why I only use them when I have to. The majors, like Digikey, Mouser, RS Components & Element 14 are preferred.

    • @johnnytheangel1
      @johnnytheangel1 ปีที่แล้ว

      you get a blank look from them everytime, 90% of components I need I have to sit and wait for them from China, and at the moment I am in the middle of restoring a JVC amp and I am replacing caps which I have to get from China and fusible resistors which I can't find anywhere, luckily I am not in a hurry

  • @TRtribal
    @TRtribal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Outside of testing with a meter, it didn't look like the fusible resistors showed much in the way of visible indication that they were dead: burned, discolored, color bands baking off, etc... Is there another indicator outside of a meter?

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically, no; fusible resistors are designed to blow in a similar manner to fuses, and rarely do you see more than extremely light discoloration at most, assuming the resistor wattage was chosen appropriately for the circuit. Fusible resistors typically have a gray ceramic body and so the temperature discoloration doesn't show up very well anyway.

    Hi Brad. I am trying to diagnose why I am getting signal distortion in an Ampeg Micro CL bass amp. I am in the UK and on the waiting list for a service but this is months long. I have established beyond doubt that the problem is not the speaker cab nor cables. I wonder if you are aware of a common/typical cause of this signal distortion that you can share? Thanks

    • @BradsGuitarGarage
      @BradsGuitarGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what that has to do with the video.
      Are you asking for free instructions on how to fix this amp yourself?
      Because that's not something I could offer, but try the Facebook repair groups as there are a lot of helpful guys on there and also search the history for that topic in case anyone has asked previously.

      @@BradsGuitarGarage Thanks Brad. I watched that particular video as I have read that overheating components can lead to distorted signal. I realise I was being cheeky asking here. Sorry about that. Thanks for the info. All the best.

    So the 1w metal film blow faster than 1/4w metal film? Interesting!

    • @BradsGuitarGarage
      @BradsGuitarGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 1w metal film was a safety type. Kind of like a fusible.
      Datasheet found here: www.yageo.com/upload/media/product/products/datasheet/lr/YAGEO%20MFR_datasheet_2022v2.pdf
      The 1/4w was not.

      Kinda surprised that the algorithm didn't block the video for "sexual content". It had pop-up ads at the beginning of the video, and I could have sworn that Brad usually disables those, so maybe the algorithm decided this was a video that would get tens of thousands of views and therefore it was worth sticking an ad on the front of it whether Brad likes it or not.

    • @BradsGuitarGarage
      @BradsGuitarGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only disable the mid-roll ads.
      You can't diasble the ads at the beginning, all you can do is make them skippable after 5 sec which is what I do.
      I might also point out that the ads play, regardless of whether I monetize a video, too.
      The $0.005 just ends up in my pocket if I monetize it.
