    4:48 there are laws in most states that prevent shops from “modifying” catalytic converters. If this came to our shop, legally the only thing we can do is replace it. Also the car doesnt know/care if there are exhaust leaks after the downstream oxygen sensor. Editing at 6:54. Omg i cant believe they didnt even put gaskets where it bolts to the engine🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️ i really wonder if they thought it didnt need them😂

    I would leave the stock headers on for the moment and take the JDL headers to a different shop to have them weld that up, then you can put them back on. I would also get a tune, you need it to take full advantage of the headers. Headers and a tune are the fix for that 3.5k-4.5k torque dip that you are experiencing with the stock headers. You can see why most people get rid of the stock headers.

    • @GoHerping
      @GoHerping  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      the stock headers are truly the saddest car part of all time. it's possible the car is already tuned to the JDL but i'm not sure - I guess i gotta get a tuner computer thingie, or find one I can borrow lol

    Hey Alex, love to see this variety on the channel. I recently bought a 2019 Subaru WRX limited with 37k miles and had an almost exact situation to you! Previous owner replaced the exhaust and air intake without tuning anything and now the air to fuel ratio is incorrect and I can’t afford to tune or fix the issue and I know if I do, it will be slow and depressing. I’m excited to see more of this journey going forward!!

      I had the same thing with my WRX I bought it with the first owner installing the Cobb intake wrong causing the car to run extremely rich
      If I was you I would get a stock intake and then save up for the accessport it’s a must have and then get a tune I get tuned by dmantuning very good tuner that knows everything about our cars
      Hope this helps a little bit

  • @LawrenceTimme
    @LawrenceTimme 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    An exhaust makes almost zero difference to the speed of the car, it just feels slow because its not as loud. That's why Honda owners put 150db exhausts on their rice boxes and think they are really fast.

  • @PocketDrummer
    @PocketDrummer 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Before you become yet another "Subarus just blow up" guy on youtube, for the love of god, if there are ANY aftermarket parts that touch air, get it tuned immediately. The fact it's been running lean enough to throw a code is REALLY BAD. This isn't a Honda, you don't just throw parts on the car and hope for the best. After you get it repaired so that the codes go away, I'd honestly just take it to the nearest tuner, have them look it over, and then get their take on whether or not it needs a tune. If the previous owner tuned it for the performance headers and then tuned it, then you would need to use the exact same headers to avoid tuning. If he didn't, then you want the stock headers. Either way, if the tuner thinks you need a tune, have $500 ready to throw down. If they say you need one and you don't tune it, every engine problem you have after that point is 100% your fault and preventable. Don't be that guy.

    • @PocketDrummer
      @PocketDrummer 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I should mention, it is generally accepted that a cat-back exhaust won't need a tune. So I wouldn't worry about that, but everything from the intake to the cat needs to be inspected to see if it's aftermarket.

    • @brzo.
      @brzo. 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      not to mention pushing it on a cold engine, subie engines (especially the brz one) can be reliable, but they got to be treated and maintained right for sure. the brz engines in my experience are bulletproof, had a buddy who redlined it multiple times a day and saw absolutely no issues, but he had a 2020. ended up selling it, but no matter what he did, he even raised the rev limit to 8,000 around there and never saw any issues. was a blast to drive that thing

    • @PocketDrummer
      @PocketDrummer 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It's running lean, which actually generates more power. It also puts him a hell of a lot closer to detonation without a tune. He's going to blow it up at this rate, and he'll probably blame it on subaru. 🙄

      @@GoHerping I guess it really helps it breathe at the higher rpms. Funnily enough I had a turbo car with a manual transmission, I bought a 3 inch downpipe with a super free flowing cat, the car had 3 little ones stock so it drastically opened up the exhaust. Kind of dumb on my part as it really only helped at higher rpm, and I say dumb because I drove the car like a grandma and actually having no back pressure hurt my spooling at low rpms lol.

    • @brzo.
      @brzo. 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      headers alone without a tune wont do much, but headers and a proper tune or OFT tune will add i think it was 20-30? on a 93 tune at least. while an e85 tune was showing around 40 hp gains, but that was about the limit on these cars. they really like e85 i guess

    Looking at the invoice, it looks like around $1k for the headers plus misc parts plus like two hours of labor. I think the labor is too high, but that'd only save you about $125 if they did it in one hour. Not super crazy all things considered for new headers.

  • @1MotoXRacer1
    @1MotoXRacer1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    So I've modified NA Subarus before for a while. Long tube equal-length headers plus an open-source custom tune gives you the most gains, but it's not much for a lot of money. Ebay ELs are fine and cheap enough. EL headers on Subarus don't sound great, but they sound much better with a Nameless Performance axle back exhaust, 4" or 5" cans.
    Long tube unequal-length gives noticeably more torque in the lower RPMs, with a slight power loss at the top end. But they sound awesome. Another drawback is cylinder #4 won't like it after a long time and hard driving, it makes #4 run a bit hotter.
    Both require proper tunes, and I would recommend going open-source if possible. On the older Subarus you're able to use a Tactrix cable and ECUFlash to grab the ECU's .bin file, send it off to a remote tuning shop. Go back and forth a few times with logs and revisions. And after a couple hundred bucks you have a tune, plus tons of features for OFFROAD USE ONLY that you can flash to your ECU. Big one being turning off any codes if you go catless.
    Also, big tip with jacking up Subarus, do not jack from the sides. There is a jack-plate underneath the front subframe, behind the oil pan, sometimes the steering rack. Should be like that for all FA and EJ motors. Jack it up, lower the sides onto jack stands. For jacking up the rear, just use the rear differential. No more crushed rails and it's much safer.

      @@GoHerping Yeah, it was a lot of learning and years of research to get my NA Legacy and STi swapped '02 WRX to where they're at now!
      I believe, if you talk to a good tuning shop - you can get the "definitions" for ECUFlash required to read the newer ECU's if you want to go the Tactrix cable route, as opposed to doing a COBB Access Port. I do not like COBB, and I hate their stock tunes, they are very much not good to run for longer than driving to a dyno shop for a proper tune. They do not come with nearly as much features or customization. They're just 'easier' for A LOT more money in the end.
      Good luck, and have fun dude!!

Gasoline vehicles essentially have the life choked out of them for emissions, opening up the air flow will yield better performance. I bought a 6.2l truck which was dead silent inside, heartbroken but a few hundred dollars for a performance intake, cutting off the 3rd cat converter, and replacing the exhaust with proper borla stainless it sounds and drives like it should.

    I can guarantee you that the performance is just a placebo on your end. Since you were getting a check engine light with the modded headers on, and the previous owner said it just needed a tune, you really weren't gaining any performance benefit from the headers at all. You were thinking the car was faster than it was because it was louder.
    Also the way you said it revs slowly in neutral, the headers have absolutely no affect on that. The flywheel is what determines how fast it revs, and you didn't swap it from a lightweight flywheel to a stock one so it definitely revs the same as it used to.

Look into an AOS, Oil Feeding (pickup / pan), and most importantly, TUNING. If you add anything that gives the motor more power, TUNE.
      Other than that I really enjoy watching someone discover the amazing world of cars. It reminds me of myself when I was 16 with my Focus ST. I made all the mistakes and paid for them. Now owning a 2020 STI 10 years later I know that reliability and comfortability are what I enjoy most.

      @@GoHerping If my memory from the video serves, you had great performance with the aftermarket mod and it was dead in the water with the stock headers. FRS's aren't fast but I've never met an owner who described it as sluggish. My theory is that the cats on your new headers are clogged OR you have another set of cats further down the exhaust system that are clogged. I'm not sure if your car has two sets of cats or not however.

      a sticker on the license plate has a date that tells cops when it was last registered/inspected, so there's a risk they'll ticket you for not renewing it each year. after an inspection, you can submit it to the DMV and they'll send an updated sticker that matches your plate number. but it's only required in some states - and even states that do require it often don't enforce it

    You’re being so unfair to your car in this video lol the only pros that has a 7.2 0-10 (on paper) is the 2024 AWD Prius which is the highest trim. You got a car that is more than a decade older and (again on paper) the 7.7 seconds is for the automatic the manual 2013 BRZ is at a stock 0-60 of 6.4. It probably just “felt slower” because it was just so much quieter and smoother than you were used to. The truth is that different exhaust manifold is not going to make much of a difference at all. Especially not without proper tuning. The main difference is going to be noise and “feel.” So I understand why it felt so much more tame to you.
