  • This is one of my favorite leech patterns and an evolution of sorts of my Aftershaft Leech featured in my first book, Fly Patterns for Stillwaters. With the advent of Marc Petitjean's Magic Tool I can now blend other materials together for my leech patterns. The body technique for this fly also works well for dragon nymphs and thoraxes on caddis pupa patterns. Be prepared for takes on the drop with this pattern.

Thanks Murray. It has been a great fly for me too. Lots of movement once it gets wet.
      Cheers, Phil

I tie Hal Jannsen's marabou dragon - found it in one of Denny Rickard's books. Brookies love it. But so messy to tie with a large metal paper clip.. this tool is so much better. Great demo - as ever with your stuff - thanks...

Phil, I really like your clips...with the exception of the fact that you find it necessary to drag every fish out of the water, tweek it's tail, keep it out of the water for waaayy too long, thereby insuring that it will die soon! Going from a near zero gravity atmosphere to holding them out of the water is very bad practice. I worked in a trout hatchery for a while. You are killing almost every one of these fish; not right away always, but slowly with skin fungus at minimum. The fungus takes up to four weeks to infect their gills, then they are done. You can do better.
