Joadja Shale Mine Trip

A trip to the Joadja Shale mine site near Mittagong NSW. Mining of shale in the valley commenced in the 1870's when operations were taken over by the Australian Kerosene Oil and Mineral Company that processing the shale was commenced with retorts and refining capacity. Peak production was in 1890 at 29,133 tons. Mining operations ceased in 1903 and only work at the orchard remained. These ruins are the best example of a shale mine in Australia.
