    If it’s not quite right then Axminster Customer Service will sort I’m sure 😉 as for the pressure applied while drilling I can assure you that the first has very little and would rattle with the slightest, the second one I think that I might have put too much tension on the pulleys and the centre pulley was the one that rattled. As I said earlier I’m now quite pleased with the drill and think I was dead unlucky, I’m sure yours will be more than acceptable 🤞🏼and with a good discount as well 😉

    I think you were very patient and also lucky to have been dealing with Axminster. Agree that quality control should have prevented this from happening but these things do happen. Very unfortunate to have had issues with 2 drills. Glad your patience paid off, you’ve got a nice piece of kit now. For sound deadening, you could look at the stuff people use on cars. Will try to find a link for you.
    Edit: this is the sort of thing I was thinking of www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2053587.m570.l1311.R-1.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xcar+sound.TRS0&_nkw=car+sound+proofing&_sacat=0
    Also look for dynamat which is a popular choice 👍

    The rattle you have there is usually due to the top pulley having backlash on the splines, noisy, but not terminal for a few years, I have one of these by Warco, they must all come from the same Chinese factory, I find most of these cheap tools need quite a lot of work to get them "useable" ,which is a bit off putting as a lot of buyers are not capable of doing this, I notice there was quite a lot of run out on the chuck when you were drilling with the large cutter, have you tried extending the chuck down as far as it will go and "wobbling" it to see how much slack there is ?I am not that enthusiastic about keyless chucks on this size of drill, but you can fit a Jacobs chuck. These drills are excellent for woodworking, but not much good for metal work, but a good engineering drill this size is well over £1000.

      The third machine they sent was acceptable and having for a while now the rattle is dependent on high much tension you put on the drive belt which in turn affects the pulleys, once mastered the feel it behaves like a good in. As for the keyless Chuck it’s garbage 👎and binned accordingly then was replaced quickly with a decent genuine Jacobs your spot on with the advise 👍🏻. Got to say I was disappointed in the drill it was inro £500 not engineer class but thought be a higher quality. Thanks for taking the time to comment 👍🏻

      @@Phenrica : You know that for a price like that, it must be possible to buy an engineering quality drill for less, with all the engineering companies and schools closing their workshops, the only downside is they are heavy, I have 3 Pollard drills and none of them cost more than £30.But I did work at a Technical College.

    I just purchased one of these and waiting for delivery. Fingers crossed i don't receive one of those knackered drills. Seems to be a common occurrence with Axminster pillar drills.

      TigerTigerPantherFox 3rd time lucky for me and I’m pleased with this one, though I junked the Chuck and replaced it with a quality Jacobs one, plus I found its best from a noise perspective not to put too much tension on the belt pulley 😉

      @@Phenrica After watching the video twice i figured you might be putting too much pressure on the wood when cutting but then again i think a pillar drill should be able to cope with the hardship of a Trade Workshop!! I got 10% off mine using an ebay voucher & took the plunge on this pillar drill & large belt sander so that's Christmas sorted for me. Cant wait! :)

    Well I bought one today mate, hope I got a nice one. I mentioned your previous issues whilst at the shop, and as usual, Axminster were honest, and said if I’m not happy, I can return it.
    Once again thanks for putting the video together.

      Hi Steve, no unfortunately, I am taking it back to the shop today to exchange it for another one. The chuck has severe run out, and after trying the usual fixes it’s not right. I believe it’s the actual chuck and not the arbor or quill. It also makes a random clicking noise when running, a bit like a ratchet?
      Axminster are spot on as usual and offered a replacement or refund. I hope the replacement is ok, as I generally like the drill.
      The table and base tops don’t look very well finished on mine but not a big deal. Anyway, I’ll let you know how the replacement works out.
      Regards
      Steve

      Got to admit I dumped the supplied keyless Chuck and replaced it with a decent Jacobs Chuck - I found the supplied one ran out and had to tap it to true it up, not good

    • @stevek5856
      @stevek5856 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve, The replacement is much better, a bit of run out still but, nothing like the first one. There is a background noise coming from the quill/chuck area but, if I apply slight pressure to the chuck, it goes? Also the plastic guard is misted to the point it’s nearly obscure.
      So, if I can cure the background noise, and change the guard, it will be a keeper. Do you have a link or part number for the chuck you bought?
      Regards
      Steve

    Nice piece of kit once you got it sorted out. I would bet that the sheave and the shaft it connects to are made by 2 different suppliers and one was at the top of the tolerance, and the other at the bottom, causing the loose fit you showed. Or perhaps even outside the tolerance specified.

    • @Phenrica

      Jim Dockrell Agree with that Theory Jim. I was surprised that the first two were so noisy as Axminster gear is usually very good. Just need to make a drill station now 😂.

    Helpful video but, try and get into the habit of clamping your workpiece, especially with larger diameter bits.
    I’m thinking of buying this model but, I’m now a little concerned.

    • @Phenrica
      @Phenrica  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve K Yep true re clamping, I’ve now added a fence etc so more ridged 😉. The 3rd drill is v good and I’m well pleased some months on! I found that I had a tendency to put too much tension on the belt when I first set it up (that contributed to the noise I think), Axminster’s Customer service are v helpful and it was sorted in the end and therefore I consider for the price it’s a decent bit of kit, though I didn’t like the keyless Chuck so I replaced it with a keyed Jacobs.

      Phenrica Wood Stuff
      Many thanks, it certainly seems a nice machine, I looked at one a few weeks ago, and was impressed. I shouldn’t worry I suppose, as Axminster have always been very honest and professional in my experience.
      Maybe I’ll have another look whilst the piggy bank allows.
      Thanks

    I intend to purchase a new pillar drill from Axminster. When I do, I shall request that they send the third drill first to save my time. Appalling Quality Control from an established Company.

      Mike Sharp Got to admit I was well disappointed, so much so that my next large machine purchase won’t be from Axminster. The drill is fine however.....
