10:36 Hay get down from there. When I was young I climbed on the house alot. Then I discovered that when you get old you hear alot of cracking noises when you fall. So I refrain from climbing! lol Great video!
Nice job, just 2 simple tips I hope that will help in the future. When using the electrical tape you should always leave the last couple of inches not stretched and that stops it from wanting to unravel. And second use Black Zip ties Not White when installing stuff outside. Black zip ties are usually UV resistant and most White zip ties are not and will harden and become brittle and break off. Hope this helps. Doug VA3DFK Ottawa Ontario Canada
Thanks for the review. I’m working on putting one of these inside my very tall attic above the garage. Since we are on the top of a hill that I most of the county… just this elevation should give good coverage. Too bad about the f@&$g HOA!
Separate your antennas, you may or will have issues like de-sense / coupling. I also had my GMRS antenna on the same mast, but I ended up moving it where my directv dish was I pulled off he dish, clamped on to the base and put on several mast extensions with guy cables supporting it. I also had the MJF and Diamond surge protectors /arrestors , but ALL of my old hams told me about Alpha Delta. The extra cost is worth the investment, the quality is night and day. Many hams vouched for them having been taken a direct hit and near by strikes....but at the end of the day the main reason is to remove build up static from the mast. Not sure if you showed it, ground your mast also; it will pick up static and may cause damage to your station and be more likely for a direct strike.
I just retired from my 46 year career as a Industrial Electrician. I also am a Ham Radio Operator. I advise you to wrap your Connections in News Paper or Similar before wrapping with sticky Tape. Keeps it from becoming Sticky when you remove it. I used Krylon Spray Paint for Plastics, Clear as my preventative maintenance although I plan to buy some Gel Coat for Fiberglass the next time I take it down. I also installed standoffs for my Coax.....
I bet you get great coverage with that antenna. I know the Comet isn't tuned for GMRS, but I bet you won't get too much reflected power when you transmit into it. If that's the case, I'd be interested in the performance of the Comet vs the GMRS antenna in the GMRS band.
Hi Ray welcome to the hobby , great bunch of guys at Great South Bay Club , worked with them a couple of times many years ago , that is a really good antenna works well on all three bands for me I have one ground mounted at about 25 feet and on 220 I can get into repeaters upstate New York with ease . Again welcome to the hobby and have fun on the air , de Tim KA2VZX
I've been looking into getting this very antenna, even though I am getting a dual-band transceiver. Thank you for all your hard work on creating this video, it helped me a lot. -73 Jon. KK7DGU
Hey man great video. Im in the exact same situation as you were when making this video. I'm downstate of you I guess Putnam. I just joined the local armature radio ham club down here. Great job and thanks for shairing.
Just ordered the CX-333 today. Going to run a diplexer with 3 mono band rigs. Less antennas, and the ability to RX/TX 3 bands. Also set up a GMRS repeater @ my QTH. Gotta have comms for the rest of the fam that's not licensed 🙂 NICE, clean install. Separate your antennas about 20' if possible to reduce desensitization. Good to see more folks getting into GMRS! 73 de N3JDK/WRPH687
I didn’t see what tape you were using. I would highly recommend MMM super 88 or as a second choice 33. It is made to be used in all weather conditions. It’s about the best in the industry.
Could you please let me know of the items that you used to connect your GMRS antenna to the initial pole. How feet of the straight metal pole to connect GMRS. Very informative. Just need more into on GMRS setup.
Thank you for your video on the installation of your CX-333. I'm actually looking into purchasing this. I'm very interested to see how you grounded this and how you did it, if that isn't too much of an ask. Thank you so much. I'll check out your other videos.
Just saw your video and I liked it a lot! I thought you had a great antenna array set up and I liked your video presentation, Thank you! Hope to see more of your content !
Nice installation and a good video Ray. I would agree with separating you antennas a little if you can. Your installation is clean, you described it well and I hope it does a good job for you. I was glad to see your son there the help. When working antennas especially when working on a roof, it is important to have a helper. If you can get your son involved, maybe it will be a good hobby you can enjoy together. 73s. WA4EOD
This is kc0rzk just to let you know that if a lighting strikes the antenna you will lose that whole chimney so you might put it up on the other side of the house with a push-up Pole where the pole is coming out of the ground they say it helps out a lot I got struck by lightning on my CB days and having the pipe come out of the ground helped out a lot just thought maybe I should come in there and say that
Thanks for the tips. I pick this location because it gives me better Coverage on getting my signal out. I live in the suburbs where there’s a lot of trees and other houses in my Vicinity of my house. So I’m playing the odds of ever getting struck by lightning. Thanks again for the advice. K2SDS 73
Nice job, thanks for sharing! Do you still use GMRS now that you're a Ham? I currently have my GMRS license and am studying for my technicians ham license.
Watching your video for the first time. 10 months has gone by, how is everything holding up? I agree, communicating will be very important if cell phones go down.
The antennas are holding up well. I haven’t installed my base radio yet. Still doing construction work in my house. I’m close on completing and then hooking up the radio.
No. They are designed for this purpose. Just use a piece of pressure-treated wood. In my case, I’m using a old scrap of vinyl flooring to protect the roof.
Check the description section of this video. I updated the parts that I used for my installation. Check your sizes that you need for your project. Good luck 👍🏽
Thank you dude I ordered the same antenna that you got for your GMRS I was looking to put the same amount on my antenna pole that I’m running my Antron 99 which is a CB antenna
@@kenwright6778 You have to cut and drill for your set up. As you seem in the video, i had to use a piece of wood as a back brace to hold it in place. It works well.
Thanks for the question. I haven't had a chance yet to use it. I have been doing alot of home improvement here. Hoping to get it running this year. I did attached my HT to it. Works perfectly.
Thanks for the question, I haven’t hooked up to my base radio yet. Still doing construction in the main living room. I did connected to a HT and of course I had better Reception.
Nice work! Your installation is A LOT cleaner than mine. I just have a J-Pole connected to my back fence, and the coax just hanging off of it. No zip-ties, or anything. So, you've got a very clean installation. Looks like I need to re-visit mine... DE K7RLN

Why didn’t you just get heat shrink tubing instead of all that taping? Just a thought.
This will hold up well to the weather. Heat shrink won’t last long in this case.
Looks clean! Nice work. Is that an Ed Fong GMRS antenna?
Thanks for the feedback. Please remember to subscribe and like the video. To answer the question, Yes.
Great work. I'm sure you've probably already covered this, but is your antenna setup grounded?
Yes, It will be. I haven’t install the radio. But it will be ground once done.
Do those straps scratch up your chimney bricks? What are you using below the mast to protect your roof shingles?
No. They are designed for this purpose. Just use a piece of pressure-treated wood. In my case, I’m using a old scrap of vinyl flooring to protect the roof.
