Swarm A.I. with thousands of cheap drones armed with high explosives , being guided by satellite is absolutely terrifying. Truly the stuff of nightmares .

      @a5cent หลายเดือนก่อน +52

You've missed the entire point of AI.
A drone swarm using AI will not need any guidance at all, neither from satellite nor anything else.
They will have a range of missions they know how to complete, and the operators will only tell them where and when. The rest they will do autonomously, including target acquisition, prioritization and engagement. All while cooperating with other members of the swarm and dynamically re-tasking if a swarm member is disabled.
We've seen nothing yet. This will be on the market in two or three years.

Ironic isn't it? That more advanced automation has put the focus back on the capabilities of the individual infantryman. And that the super-solider of the 21st century might actually be a frat boy with a controller in his hands. What a world.

Looking at FPV drones used in Ukraine, what sort of run time do they require? How much should their bench press be to operate that drone?
Our US army is now the smartest group of soldiers in history. Guys with controllers and computer skills are way more effective in modern combat than some dude with armor and an M4. Out thinking the enemy is much more useful than our shooting him. Resource utilization and supply lines win battles. Guy going Rambo is cool and all, but 3:1 with stable supply wins every time.

I called this 💩 back in 2015🙌🏽. As a former U.S Marine whose M.O.S. was 0341 and I spent 8 years serving in a weapons company either on the gun line with 81mm mortars or as a F.O. I knew the second I got the first DJI Mavic Pro to film my Vietnam vacation that this was the future of warfare. I wasn’t even so much thinking about placing munitions on them I was purely looking at it from a call for fire standpoint and how it would revolutionize how we planned out our fire missions.

Perun has talked about this, and noted how anti-drone countermeasures evolve in tandem with the drones themselves. Then there's Anduril, who produces both primary attack drones and drone-hunting counter-drones. This is the true 5D chess, in which the explosives are real and the pieces move on their own.

I suppose this still represents a reduction in combat casualties for a force that uses drones. I'd rather my drone be shot down than be killed in combat. I understand that part of the design spec of the Fairey Swordfish was 'low and slow' and 'stringbag', that is WW1 wood, wire and doped linen. It's very hard to shoot down these aircraft because there's so little to them. The prop and engine protects the crew, and the wings and fuselage can take plenty of shrapnel damage.
As for radar controlled gunnery, this post-dates the design, but this too sees few returns due to a lack of metal, and in part due to low flying.

The 'stringbag' was developed in the 20s/30s for British carrier ops, a different epoch, which is pretty much Peter's point.
The game has changed, twice, in recent years: ship killing missiles currently used to attack shipping in the Red Sea and now drone warfare.

@ 5:45 That is interesting that "Russia stopped training 'engineer's' ...over 30 years ago", though we cannot ignore a similar issue in the United States where the standard of the title of "engineer" has been lowered down to where, if you can turn on a light switch, you get the title (social promotion), but at least there is the exception of professional licensure (for Professional Engineers - PE's), yet...and I emphasize the YET!
I say YET because the US is on a diminishing (entropic) trend for the standard of "engineer" where now, even civilian PE licensure in the United States is being degraded (can just look at the result of regulatory depreciation in Texas, as their grid lost power for an extended period during a few winter storms in 2021 because they isolated and deregulated their grid, from the rest of the US. Another example of regulatory depreciation is the 737-MAX with incestuous payment by Boeing to FAA DER's, and another example is the Titan Submersible where they claimed to do "good engineering" but not a single licensed PE involved. Can name countless fatal results of "good engineering" where no actively licensed PE was involved. Not to say PE's don't make fatal mistakes, but the system does lower the body count, that is as long as the system is functioning and the standards for a PE are set high, based on robust knowledge of physics not politics, and so I can understand how a Phoenix Ghost, via USAF, is made for extreme accuracy, helping save civilian lives, by maintaining high standards).
In my state (AZ), the legislature is delaying renewal of our civilian technical board, of which sets a standard much higher than being able to turn on a light switch, but if they do not renew the board by July, this summer, there will no longer be any professional engineers regulated in Arizona.
The effects may not be immediate, but over time, if regulatory degradation (entropy) is allowed to continue, then the result will be Idiocracy, e.g. catastrophic grid failures like in Texas 2021, more electrocutions, fires, bridge collapses, failing sewer systems, etc. Unfortunately, most politicians (just like corporations, though slightly less short term) fail to see beyond their next term/quarter, instead of the 100+ year design life span of a bridge, etc., but sadly, the body count has to rise, which could take a few decades (as apparently, Russia is now learning from their 30 years of lowering standards) before the idiots get a clue (e.g. "Idiocracy" movie becoming a documentary, where crops are watered with Gatorade, only it seems Russia is the first to start experiencing Idiocracy).
To end on an optimistic note, Neil Armstrong called himself a "mere technician", he set the highest standard possible for a PE, one of genuine humility, knowing his life depended on professionalism (400K+ professional scientists, engineers, and technicians), a brutal lesson taught by Ed, Gus, and Roger.
We can only do great things successfully, if we set profoundly high standards, in the eyes of incredible humility.

Imagine a reusable ballistic missile system that can put 200 tons of small drones over a city. Each drone only carries a couple of pounds of explosives. The AI on each drone knows the city and has specific infrastructure targets, like transformers, etc. and 30-40,000 infrastructure targets in the city are hit near simultaneously. Or create a swarm pod drone system for the B-52 and drop 7,000 drones per sortie on target.

And a 80k pound Minuteman III can deliver 8 nukes, versus a Saturn 5 at 6.5 million pounds (Or Starship at 11 million) to deliver your drones.
If you want to non-lethally attack infrastructure, Tomahawk missiles can be remotely guided to targets and have a warhead option designed to destructively short out power substations.

Russia's oil fields, transport and refining has always been in operation without the option to shut things down. Peter is correct: they can't shut parts of the system down to repair etc like we can in the US. If they have to shut a well in then it probably will never come back online. The whole system is comprised of Western made equipment and tech, which they don't have the ability to replace or manufacture. Essentially, the petroleum industry in Russia is the main provider of income for the war machine, but is also one of Russia's greatest Achilles heels (they have quite a few). Armies run on diesel in the modern era- not their soldier's bellies

What does it mean? Total destruction of economies that decide to go to war.

      Lol.
      It's dying, and not slowly.
A lack of labour, in particular skilled labour (the military is competing with industry) is leading to chronic problems.

Precisely. The age of regional imperialism ended decades ago. Some countries haven’t figured this out yet, but they’ll learn soon enough

Another major factor is gut bacteria. As a consequence of Stalin's centralized economy and subsequent liberalization of trade relations in the EU regarding leafy vegetables, cabbage consumption has plummeted amongst average Russians. As a result, this is the second generation that lacks essential gut bacteria that enhances the absorption of critical neuro-enhancing vitamins and minerals. The average neuro-synaptic cycle has decline three fold as a result and accordingly, time sensitive decision making processes are simply no longer the forte of Russian planners. Blame the lack of beet and cabbage borscht. Blame fast food. That is the end of my Ted Talk (drops the mic).

I'm 54 and just recently realized importance of fermented foods for symbiotic gut bacteria. My immune system is benefiting now. Much Respect.

This technology is old about 2011 I was trained to deploy these drone. It was awesome. I can't even imagine what version there on now or new prototypes that have been out for 15 years

It is interesting that in warfare often one piece of tech will totally change the game. In WWl it was the internal combustion engine. In WWll it was radar. Today it is the AI drone. Tomorrow it will be the flint spear.

Peter, telling the world a ship can't hit something below level is total BS. Stay in your lane. No naval officer (I'm one of them) will believe you when you speak nonsense like that. True, missiles won't hit something next to you, but the main gun on most ships will depress below level and for stuff that's closer in, there are CIWS which stands for, get this, CLOSE IN Weapon System. It's a radar controlled gatling gun that can hit fast moving air or surface targets relatively close to the ship. And when it comes to small boat attacks which are essentially like Ukraine's drones that have sunk several ships, modern warships carry machine guns that are moving from human controlled (.50 cal usually) in older ships to more modern optically remote or autonomously controlled in newer ships. The human controlled ones have trouble keeping up with many small boats but the Russians don't have modern ones so they're stuck using people to aim in the dark. Highly ineffective. Modern systems can handle them much better but still not perfectly. I've heard you say that ships guns can't depress in several videos now. Total nonsense.

You are right that warfare is revolutionizing on the Ukrainian battlefield and any nation that doesn't pay attention to what's going on will be left behind.
