Seeing the notch on the bottom of the drawer is a hint, and you'd likely peer into the openings where the drawers came out of as well. If you noticed that there was a little latch or something that could link up with it, yeah you'd give it a shot.

Awesome box/present/challenge but wasn't designed to last 100 years without swapping the packs out, heck even 100 and it's not gonna work as inteneded. It's literally nothing like the Antikythera in form or function other than it has gears but so does my kids wooden toys.

Of course it wasn't intended to predict the position of planetary bodies and eclipses like the Antikythera mechanism. My comparison was simply that these are machines that require careful examination to uncover their secrets. The Antikythera mechanism machine was x-rayed to understand it better. Similarly, the secrets of this puzzle box and the mystery of its purpose could be learned without breaking it apart or unscrewing/prying it open like a kid's wooden toy.
I actually think it's really sweet how you built this all for your dad. It looks hard as hell, but painstakingly well designed nonetheless. Props to ya' for the most unconventional albeit unique father's day gift in the world.

Holy cow, my dude, this is the level of complexity I always wished puzzle boxes had in real life... usually, I only see stuff (slightly above) this level in video games like Fireproof's Room games. This is incredible craftsmanship and ingenuity. Congratulations!
You could make the puzzles a little easier. Not use the gear-wheels for decoding for instance. This would make the words in the jumble easier to spot. Using magnets to be able to position the slits is something a smart 6 year old can figure out. Most don't read well enough at 6 to spot words in a jumble. And you could leave more clues, like "start by turning the legs" or a little drawing of a symbol that is on the legs and an arrow to show you have to twist it.

With the drawer that you insert upside down, it did not look as if there was any logical way to work that out, other than through trial and error. Each clue should have something that leads you to the next, and the upside down drawer was the only one that I saw that did not. Great peice of work!
Think about it: if you have nothing else to go with at the start you would twist, push and pull every element of the box to see what happens. You would find the leg rather quickly. Pulling out the drawer you would look into the hole and see the lever at the back, and then think what could be used to move it.

i grow up with video games, i always loved puzzle solving games, and when i saw this video and just how much effort you put in, i have to say, i'm just amazed. i wouldn't mind if someone gave me this particular box, ofc without me knowing how to open it and see how much time would it took me. anyway, great work, excellent even. if you build something in the future i would like to see it

just be careful when the batteries run low, or you won't get the key out if it happens to be in the drawer (maybe should keep a spare somewhere or make the batteries accessible from the outside

I don't know if I'm being really dense here, but how do 7 sets of four characters, each character of which gives 2 outcomes on the gears, give you 5 characters to feed into the second set-up to find the magnet positions?
Yeah that part confused me too. I wish he had given an example of decoding one or two of those magnet positions. Maybe some of the symbols on the gears when decoding those 7 sets of 4 letters aren’t on the grid and are just there to throw you off, but I still don't understand how the first setup is supposed to give out 5 characters to use for the second setup of gears like you said.
Brad Calvin I found the solution on Reddit, you can use this cypher to try it yourself. rawgit.com/rcalme/puzzle-box/master/Cipher_Gears/Translator/cipherGears.html After setting up the gears for DAD, you go through each set of 4 letters and turn the first gear to the letter you’re deciphering in that set. You alternate between the second and third gear for the correct answers, so the first and third letters of each set will be taken from the gear in the middle and the second and fourth letters will be taken from the gear on the right. When you decipher all 7 sets, it’ll spell the message: “MAGN ETCO MBIN ATIO NCOD EISH RJAS” Tbh I don’t think I could ever figure that out on my own lol

He then says that the “MAGN ETCO MBIN ATIO NCOD EISH RJAS” will give you 5 letters to fill into the "524 P$#" combination to get the correct symbols. I understand the "MAGN" decode, I understand the "524 P$#" gear combination, but I'm still not quite getting how "MAGN ETCO..." gives you 5 letters to input into the new gear combination.
Brad Calvin It spells out “magnet combination is HRJAS”, so you use HRJAS on the second set of gears with the symbols to find the magnet coordinates. One letter for each pair of symbols.
This is really cool my friend, I made my dad a wooden clock one time for fathers day or his birthday or something, he likes wood working and deer hunting so I made a wooden clock that looked like a round saw blade with a deer in the woods silhouette scene i cut out with a school saw. Four legs lol feet It's a cool concept, the tiny ones that are 100s of years old could easily be broken open, but were used to help people through something, like a father leaving one for his son after he passes. Those tiny things didn't look complex, but damn... This had some time put into it and was pretty neat, nice job!
Okay, but the thing I ended up really wanting to know is what kind of things you put in a puzzle box, and in this instance what did you hide inside the box for your dad to find? Because I feel like the satisfaction of solving it could easily dissolve into disappointment depending on the gift inside. It's s great work up, but the climax is important dude. Even just cutting to a rick roll upon opening the box and peering inside would have really made this video complete.
crash979797 but it's a box. The point of a box is to put something in it. The point of a box that is hard to open is having something rewarding or valuable inside. And all jokes aside it's an amazing gift, so much work and thought put in it. Even if I loved puzzles like that, it would still be weird to me if I opened it and there wasn't like...at least a chocolate bar or some new socks inside. What's inside doesn't have to actually outweigh the value of the box itself, it just seems... like the value of it being a box where the goal is to open it makes the box less valuable because it didn't do it's one job.
crash979797 the reward of a puzzle is figuring it out, the reward of a box is using it to contain something. Then you put the two concepts together and you get a puzzle box. Otherwise he might as well made it smaller and just put a note instead of the key in the last drawer congratulating you on completing the puzzle.
If getting the box open isn't rewarding enough, you've given it to the wrong person. But even after it's been solved, it's a cool place to keep things. Like baby pictures of your clever boy.

You kind of glossed over how decoding works with the gears. You just said, "it decodes to _____" without showing the process. I get that you have to start with the key characters aligned with the indicators, but then what?

I played with that a bit, and it looks like you enter the ciphertext on the first gear, then read the plaintext off the second gear. If this is correct, I have two questions: 1) What is the purpose of the third gear, and 2) Actually, what is the purpose of multiple gears, since any character will always map to the same character at the output, regardless of the position in the text, making this a simple substitution cipher? I don't mean to criticize that you didn't emulate the full Enigma mechanism, but it just seems like an overly complicated way of implementing a substitution cipher, if I understand it correctly. Is the point just obfuscation? Very nice craftsmanship overall. It certainly would have kept me going for quite a while.
This was a super fascinating video! Something I would have done while working on it is to add a liiiittle hint, a small dark red mark on the bottom of the box where he needs to slide it in upside down. That way he can look at it and think “hmm, this is the same color as the gears. I wonder what this is for...” and then that way it’ll be WAAAY more satisfying when he finally figures it out. Just a little thing I’d add, but overall great puzzle!!!

Legend has it that in the time of Alexander the Great (a vicious, bloody butcher IMO, but never mind), some shrine that he visited had a rope knot of great complexity, along with the challenge that whoever could untie the knot would rule the world (which, of course AtG wanted to do). Alexander (he was a great warrior, and tremendously strong) drew his sword and cleft the knot with one blow, exclaiming, "Thus do I untie it!"

It forces the person to stick to it while trying EVERY POSSIBLE THING.. then after 15-20min, they are rewarded with a POP sound, or a panel slides open, or something LIGHTS UP, which is like a REWARD after working so hard on it lol. I get it... people who like these and have done them before - WILL figure it out. People who don't like it and lack patience... Two stages involved decoding a message. It would've been nice if you had explained how to decode each message and what the decoded messages were.
i grow up with video games, i always loved puzzle solving games, and when i saw this video and just how much effort you put in, i have to say, i'm just amazed. i wouldn't mind if someone gave me this particular box, ofc without me knowing how to open it and see how much time would it took me. anyway, great work, excellent even. if you build something in the future i would like to see it

just be careful when the batteries run low, or you won't get the key out if it happens to be in the drawer (maybe should keep a spare somewhere or make the batteries accessible from the outside

I don't know if I'm being really dense here, but how do 7 sets of four characters, each character of which gives 2 outcomes on the gears, give you 5 characters to feed into the second set-up to find the magnet positions?
Yeah that part confused me too. I wish he had given an example of decoding one or two of those magnet positions. Maybe some of the symbols on the gears when decoding those 7 sets of 4 letters aren’t on the grid and are just there to throw you off, but I still don't understand how the first setup is supposed to give out 5 characters to use for the second setup of gears like you said.

Brad Calvin I found the solution on Reddit, you can use this cypher to try it yourself.

After setting up the gears for DAD, you go through each set of 4 letters and turn the first gear to the letter you’re deciphering in that set. You alternate between the second and third gear for the correct answers, so the first and third letters of each set will be taken from the gear in the middle and the second and fourth letters will be taken from the gear on the right. When you decipher all 7 sets, it’ll spell the message:
“MAGN ETCO MBIN ATIO NCOD EISH RJAS”

Thanks. So wait... looking again, you take to "OFGX" and decode to "MAGN. Thanks for explaining that part. He then says that the “MAGN ETCO MBIN ATIO NCOD EISH RJAS” will give you 5 letters to fill into the "524 P$#" combination to get the correct symbols. I understand the "MAGN" decode, I understand the "524 P$#" gear combination, but I'm still not quite getting how "MAGN ETCO..." gives you 5 letters to input into the new gear combination.
Brad Calvin It spells out “magnet combination is HRJAS”, so you use HRJAS on the second set of gears with the symbols to find the magnet coordinates. One letter for each pair of symbols.
This is really cool my friend, I made my dad a wooden clock one time for fathers day or his birthday or something, he likes wood working and deer hunting so I made a wooden clock that looked like a round saw blade with a deer in the woods silhouette scene i cut out with a school saw. Heheheh, I seen he had it in a garage sale for like 10 cents or something a year or two later.. hehehe.. This is really cool my friend, Thanks for sharing and have a blessed week

You could always set it up to also accept an outside power source in case of emergency...lol
It could also be set up such that the battery keeps it closed. So if the battery dies, it just opens.
But that would just cause the battery to die faster? A predicament indeed...

It's a cool concept, the tiny ones that are 100s of years old could easily be broken open, but were used to help people through something, like a father leaving one for his son after he passes.
Those tiny things didn't look complex, but damn...
This had some time put into it and was pretty neat, nice job!
Okay, but the thing I ended up really wanting to know is what kind of things you put in a puzzle box, and in this instance what did you hide inside the box for your dad to find? Because I feel like the satisfaction of solving it could easily dissolve into disappointment depending on the gift inside. It's s great work up, but the climax is important dude. Even just cutting to a rick roll upon opening the box and peering inside would have really made this video complete.
I think the gift is figuring the puzzle out rather than what you get afterwards.
crash979797 but it's a box. The point of a box is to put something in it. The point of a box that is hard to open is having something rewarding or valuable inside.
And all jokes aside it's an amazing gift, so much work and thought put in it. Even if I loved puzzles like that, it would still be weird to me if I opened it and there wasn't like...at least a chocolate bar or some new socks inside. What's inside doesn't have to actually outweigh the value of the box itself, it just seems... like the value of it being a box where the goal is to open it makes the box less valuable because it didn't do it's one job.
The point of a puzzle box, obviously, is to open it. You can put something in it, but the reward is figuring it out.
crash979797 the reward of a puzzle is figuring it out, the reward of a box is using it to contain something. Then you put the two concepts together and you get a puzzle box. Otherwise he might as well made it smaller and just put a note instead of the key in the last drawer congratulating you on completing the puzzle.
If getting the box open isn't rewarding enough, you've given it to the wrong person. But even after it's been solved, it's a cool place to keep things. Like baby pictures of your clever boy.
We NEED a followup video. How did Dad like the box? How long did it take him to solve it? Did you have to help in ANY way? What happens to the puzzle when the batteries go dead? Fabulous achievement and thanks for sharing this video!

The fact that this was costume makes this mind blowing.
You kind of glossed over how decoding works with the gears. You just said, "it decodes to _____" without showing the process. I get that you have to start with the key characters aligned with the indicators, but then what?

I played with that a bit, and it looks like you enter the ciphertext on the first gear, then read the plaintext off the second gear.
If this is correct, I have two questions:
1) What is the purpose of the third gear, and
2) Actually, what is the purpose of multiple gears, since any character will always map to the same character at the output, regardless of the position in the text, making this a simple substitution cipher?
I don't mean to criticize that you didn't emulate the full Enigma mechanism, but it just seems like an overly complicated way of implementing a substitution cipher, if I understand it correctly. Is the point just obfuscation?

This was a super fascinating video! Something I would have done while working on it is to add a liiiittle hint, a small dark red mark on the bottom of the box where he needs to slide it in upside down. That way he can look at it and think “hmm, this is the same color as the gears. I wonder what this is for...” and then that way it’ll be WAAAY more satisfying when he finally figures it out. Just a little thing I’d add, but overall great puzzle!!!

Legend has it that in the time of Alexander the Great (a vicious, bloody butcher IMO, but never mind), some shrine that he visited had a rope knot of great complexity, along with the challenge that whoever could untie the knot would rule the world (which, of course AtG wanted to do). Alexander (he was a great warrior, and tremendously strong) drew his sword and cleft the knot with one blow, exclaiming, "Thus do I untie it!"

Dude.... ABSOLUTELY GENIUS!!!!!!! ... I see people on here saying (convoluted logic) and (Dad will never figure it out). People dont' understand that the people who DO these complex puzzles LOVE IT, and the solutions are ALWAYS convoluted. It forces the person to stick to it while trying EVERY POSSIBLE THING.. then after 15-20min, they are rewarded with a POP sound, or a panel slides open, or something LIGHTS UP, which is like a REWARD after working so hard on it lol. I get it... people who like these and have done them before - WILL figure it out. People who don't like it and lack patience... WON'T figure it out. - I gotta admit, I'm only just discovering these puzzle boxes, and I WOULD NOT have figured it out. LOLOL....
That said... again... GENIUS!!! You need to patent it and contact a manufacturer. You will have a WONDERFUL little home business going shipping these things out all over the world! Keep designing different ones and post them on your own website... and you & Dad are set for life! Best wishes! 😊👍
