  • Bagshawe Cavern is a sizeable cave located above the village of Bradwell in Derbyshire, UK. Formerly a show cave, the system is now popular with adventure groups and club cavers alike.
Derbyshire was an extensive area of lead mining in the 18th century, and miners digging Mulespinner Mine broke through into extensive natural cave passage with an active stream. Indeed the way on today is through the mined Mulespinner entrance and down almost 100 steps into the natural cave.
This video follows a group down the Mulespinner steps, past the Dungeon, an approximately 8m deep pothole linking to the lower series, and along the upper main passage to the Hippodrome, a large circular chamber with many fallen boulders. From there a low muddy crawl brings the group out near the main stream, the Bradwell Brook. The water is next seen at Bagshawe Resurgence in Bradwell village.
Water levels were quite low on this trip, and indeed the Dungeon was completely dry. In flood conditions, the Dungeon can fill completely with water and the muddy crawl through to the main stream can fill to the roof.
Thanks to the Derbyshire (NW) Scouts Caving Team and members of 7th Manchester Scout Group.

Whoa...many memories here for me. Did Bagshawe a few times in the early 80s with Midland Camping Venture. I would get stuck in there now!

I am not a fan of "GroPro" videos but this was clean, crisp and light. (usually they are the exact opposite). Felt like I was actually there. Great job :o)

Cheers Ian. My first proper cave video (although I've produced a short one for the Matienzo Caves project in a dig we had going out there - for a different channel). Yes, I sometimes find GoPro videos can be slightly difficult to watch with the fisheye lens effect, but hopefully it's not too noticeable here.

Hopefully! Need to work out what else I can easily capture with my current setup though.
