  • Watch my new film, MY SWEET PRINCE, a fever dream love letter to the intensity of teenage love. Featuring #Placebo on the sound track! Check it out here: • MY SWEET PRINCE - Shor...
    WE ONCE WERE TIDE
    -------
    Written by Matthew Kyne Baskott. Directed by Jason Bradbury. Cinematography by Adam Scarth.
    Editing by Yasuyuki Otsuki. Music by Patrick Jonsson. Sound by Marcin Knyziak
    Starring Alexander Scott, Tristan Bernays and Mandy Aldridge
    Set on the Isle of Wight, the film tells the story of Anthony and Kyle, and their last night together as Kyle moves away leaving Anthony to look after his terminally ill mother. Poetic in nature, the film is concerned with exploring the intimate and often unspoken moment in which we give something special away.

    So touching, His mother had forgotten who he was, but at a moment when he desperately needed a mothers love she was there for him. I lost my mother to Cancer 3 years ago. I was really moved by this. excellent video and so well made.

    This film is exquisite (writing, acting, cinematography, music, editing, directing).
    The gifts Kyle gives Anthony: a kinder, more humane perspective on his mother & himself, the images (photos, memories) to keep forever, the poignancy of love and loss, the beauty of regaining his mom (only when he lets himself be vulnerable can she BE his mom).
    Kyle moves on (school, life) despite his own pain at letting go, despite his love for Anthony...
    Thank you so much for posting this. It is truly fine.

    It's always harder for the one who's left behind. Those who move on to new things have nothing to remind them of the good times, but those left behind, they have to deal with looking at the places and things that help make the memories. It's never easy when someone walks away.

    I love short films because it takes skills and talents to evoke as much emotions and get the message across in such a short time frame. The director made sure that everything from the setting, the mood, the storyline to the characters all intertwined together. What I appreciated most was the title. It kept me thinking how many ways can this movie be synonymous with the word tide. Theres a lot going for it and I really have to watch this twice to get the full gist of the film. 5/5!

  • @crooner62
    @crooner62 11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I didn't experience this as depressing - yes, heartbreaking - but profoundly hopeful, too. Kyle is moving on to a new life, Anthony has found the mother he lost and the love between him and Kyle is not a waste, not a hopeless journey, but a powerful connection that gives each of them a gift forever.

      I know a dozen or more same-sex relationships that are very happy, and the couples have been together two, five, ten, twenty years or more. Don't give up, my friend.

    • @JBradburyFilm
      @JBradburyFilm  9 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      harhainen I will admit, it is sad. But it's also hopeful that two gay teenagers were able to find each other in such a rural setting. It was also a very personal story, wherever you grow up, there are some people (Kyle) who will never be happy where they are (Me) and move away, and people like Anthony who are more content with what they have, where they have it (A large number of my friends stayed on the Isle of Wight). I think that's a thing that goes for heterosexuals too. There must be countless straight couples who have gone through the same thing being forced apart by circumstance - and although it's sad, they're last day together will be something they remember forever.... (and who knows, maybe they meet up and get married a few years down the line hahha ;)

    This movie is endearing, sweet and sad. When things are spinning out of control and life is full of stress its great to have someone to be you relief. If and when that person leaves it can be unbearable but I like the fact that he was there while he could be for his boyfriend. This speaks volume about the relationship and love they shared for each other and his mom. I really loved this short film.

    It's truly beautiful as short film. The story, light as a countryside life and the tone of scene is almost monochrome. The touching plots are really just normal stuffs between the two actors. I love so much the cinematography view of the ocean during dusk when they ran to find the mom, dark but powerful. Also the end is not dramatic but very moving, realistic and well done. The emotion of the short is like the general tone, dark but slow, and, so powerful to leave people speechless. Thank you for this great short film!

    Beautiful. This film is just beautiful.
    The pure imaginagion of having someone so close, in a region with barely humans living in, being together for so long and being so in love and trust. And then loosing this special human.
    This film touches the very bottom of my soul.

    Kyle IS a deeply compassionate man. He teaches Anthony to SEE, to love his mother again, to let go of his control/anger/resentment - all the natural feelings of a young man struggling with loss and the unfairness of life.
    Kyle is brave to move on - he is clearly pained to leave.
    They are blessed to have found the love they have together - even if the relationship ends - and to have found love/life again: Kyle, his future; and Anthony, the nurturing tenderness of his mom before she dies.

    Passionate and heartbreaking short film. Anthony and Kyle really had a lovely relationship going on, it was a shame they had to part ways. Sadly, love can be that way sometimes. The ending was a bit of a downer but has a hint of optimism to it. While Anthony and Kyle were not able to be together physically- in spirit and at heart they will always be one.

    I don't want to encourage the thought that gays are unhappy, it's just my experience of growing up as a gay kid in a small rural town. Hopefully what people also see is that I am now doing what I love, making films, telling stories and showing that there is hope. I suspect that the new wave of young film makers will have more positive stories as it slowly becomes easier to be out and gay. Thanks for watching :)

    What I like about this it’s not focusing on the fact there gay or Sex or anything, just on relationship, how a partner can be man or woman, it’s sad they parted ways in the end but as outdated as it might be I really love how it just shows how one person can care for the other regardless of gender, the pictures he took signifies allot and is a beautiful thing. He truly cares for this person regardless if there lives lead them on diverting paths

    This was so lovely! I really enjoyed the fact that it wasn't about overcoming the closet or angst relating to that -- their problems weren't sexuality based (i.e: issues relevent to any type of romantic relationship).
    Also, Broken Colours looks really fantastic - if you're still looking for funding have you considered doing a KickStarter?

  • @jussayin2803
    @jussayin2803 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    both straight and gay people go through this same sad story, so i think it's unfair to say that this plot encourages the general perception that being gay equals having an unhappy life. personally, i actually find this movie subtle and without pretensions for melodramatic tragedy that are overdone in many films -- gay or not. the subtlety is precisely what makes it authentic and moving. kudos to you sir! more films of this quality i hope. ;)

    It sucks that all gay shorts ever are depressing as fuck, but as much as it depressed the shit out of me, it was really beautiful. Genuine emotion, not melodramatic. I have, for some reason, seen about 15 gay short-films today, and I think this is my favorite. So beautiful!

    A remarkable capture of the unspoken reality of gay son's as carers and definitely one vital takeaway from the film for me. The brutal lack of hope further rusted on by the loss of intimacy only makes this a plight that many carers live & spiral down from. The journey is thankless, isolating and all-encompassing. It is relentless, unforgiving & selfish by its nature, but Anthony cannot find options. The dutiful son who will live forever with a scar of honour & very possibly a dark shadow of a life circumstance that will eternally haunt him. The portrayal of helpless sadness permeates the soul, and unless one has walked his path, no wild imagination could feel his pain & torment. A brilliant piece, Jason x

  • @JBradburyFilm
    @JBradburyFilm  11 ปีที่แล้ว +102

    You understood it pretty well. Anthony (who is looking after his mum, who is terminally ill) can't leave the island where they live, as he can't bare the thought of leaving his mother in care. Kyle, who leaves the letter, has no choice but to leave as there is no future for him on the Island. It's a sad thing and does beg the question, was Kyle right? Should he have left or tried to work things out. In the end I think Anthony would be happy Kyle followed his dreams.

    Understandable the way Kyle chose to leave but he took the way that was easy for HIM. If he truly cared about Anthony, he should have talked to him about leaving, and given him the time to process the loss. He wasn't even given the chance to say goodbye - and Kyle didn't properly say goodbye either.
    Kyle's way of leaving is basically saying that he didn't trust Anthony enough to handle it - and to not hold him back.
    It is an incredibly selfish and cowardly way to leave. Telling Anthony "tomorrow". Anthony probably felt abandoned. So sad and angry for Anthony.

    I appreciate how you can see that they truly loved each other. I just wish that other people could find the same thing they had since I never will. It's been a struggle for me to come to terms with the fact that I'll probably never be in a relationship because of my body type. I have accepted that it's always the healthy, muscular, wealthy, couples that are successful; and me being so far away from all those things proves to me that I'll never be good enough for anybody. It's been super hard to understand that I will be alone because of my body and my weight, but at least I finally do.

I think he will regret the way he left and for ever want it back. The way you managed to get this across with such few words it leaves me speechless. It was the power of his love that allowed him to leave. You should always say goodbye and not runaway. I didn't get the chance my first love died suddenly. He will always be there never forgotten.
