Thanks a lot for that, I have a few old Riley Pucket records but I hadn't heard him do that song, but Jimmie Rodgers obviously had. Blood poisoning from a boil which got out of hand.

I have a theory, that Jimmie Rodgers heard Riley Puckett, when Rogers was a railroad brakeman and would have had occasion to frequent Atlanta, GA which was a good sized railroad hub in those days and was where Puckett lived.
When his band didn't show up to Roger's initial recording session in Bristol, TN (They'd had a falling out), Rodgers ended up playing solo songs, which he'd heard Puckett play and sing. I read somewhere, that Rodgers and his band had planned to play a different style of music, perhaps more toward Jazz. I'm not sure. Rodgers, finding himself abandoned but with a microphone in front of him, played and sang what he could pull off solo, and it worked. I have no proof of this. ...It's just a guess. I'd listened to Jimmie Rodgers for years, before I heard Riley Puckett. When I finally heard Riley and knew that much of his career predated Jimmy Rodgers, it occurred to me, that Puckett was somehow a major influence on Rogers. It was kind of like the Bosley Sisters and the Andrew Sisters, where the copy was more well known, than the original.
Of course, Riley had been the lead vocalist and guitarist of Gid Tanner and his Skillet Lickers, which had a recorded a bunch of Columbia Records back before it was common for a Folk/Hillbilly/String Band/Proto Country music band to be put on a big record company's marquee label like Columbia, so maybe Jimmie Rogers had just heard a lot of Riley Puckett or Gid Tanner and his Skillet Lickers records?

@VictrolaJazz Thank you Eddie! I'm not sure what caused his blood poisoning. Maybe some bad liquor?

Wikipedia said it was from a pimple on his neck that turned into a boil. He put off treatment until it was too late. They lanced it, but the infection had spread to his blood. I've has them before, so did my grandpa and great-grandpa. They are painful as heck, I'm sure he had no idea how serious it could get. RIP Mr. Puckett.

Danke, ich habe mich das auch gefragt. Ich glaube, hier in Deutschland weiß man wenig über ihn. Ich liebe seine kraftvolle und trotzdem so gefühlvolle Stimme.
