    I’m not a palm addict but I know the feeling. I’m a prickly pear addict. I know it’s crazy, but I have over 200 species/varieties. I know they’re painful and annoying but the tiny differences in shape/color/spines and most importantly, flowers are what I’m attracted to. It’s good to have hobbies that keep us busy and our brains active!

      That’s amazing! I love it. I have a small cactus garden in the middle of all the tropicals. My hardy prickly pears are really beautiful, but I only have a couple varieties.

    Hello, my name is Brett. I am also an addict.. I suffer from a Palm Tree 🌴 addiction, and Tropical Plant 🪴 abuse.. It's been 3 days since I last used.. 😩 in the fall when all the Palms, and Tropicals have to come inside the house my relationship suffers tremendously. Suddenly we loose use of major parts of our home like the living room, dining room, spare bedroom, back porch, and so on.. I hate that I put my loved ones through this.. I'll try deflection tactics like "it's not my fault, I'm not the one who built the house with big windows in these rooms on the South side of the house.. take it up with them" but that's the guilt talking.. I have only myself to blame when I know that I have way to many plants and I see that it's 40% off Tropicals at Agway or there's some good looking plants on the Clearance Rack at Lowe's and I black out only to wake up in my Van with all the seats removed and the entire back filled with plants.. these are some of my highest highs and lowest lows.. I've tried medications, therapy nothing works.. it's only a matter of time until I fall off the wagon and go on a bender spiral out of control again.. it's been great sharing with all of you.. thank you for listening.

      This is so funny! And so true! I am laughing out loud while reading this. I’m now going to use the “black out” excuse when I get home with more palms and tropicals. Perfect! 😀😀😀😀😀

    You’re living your best life. You have palms that bring joy and a piano overlooking the Hudson. Isn’t that the whole point? I’m happy for you ❤

      It is. And thank you. Like I said in the spring I won’t even remember that the fall was difficult. 😀

    Absolutely loved the confessional Tim. You're experience mirrors mine when the odd person who actually can recognise the difference between one palm and another comes round to see the garden which makes it all worthwhile. It reminds me of the TV show American pickers when collectors have the two guys visit who really appreciate their collection. Even if the collector can't bring themself to sell anything they love the experience of someone coming round who actually appreciates what they have. Great video, very cool garden and stunning views from your living room. What am amazing place to live. Keep up the good work and continue the fight to maintain your palms 👍

      Thank you so much. You certainly understand the struggle. I know in a couple of weeks I will be done for the winter and then very soon I won't even remember how hard this fall was getting everything together and ready for the cold. I "think" I'm actually looking forward to winter so I don't have to do anything... but I know myself well enough that a week will go by and I will be coming up with some new project for the garden even if it has to start indoors.

      My obsession came from my childhood being born in the Dominican Republic came to New York at the age of 7 in 1972, Those childhood memories never fade🤗🌴They rewoke while stationed in Okinawa Japan while I served, enjoying the beautiful tropical botanical gardens of Okinawa, when I left the service met my wonderful wife bought our house and the rest is history, being a palm addict is a good thing 🤗🌴Not as bad as you tim😂😂but a good thing nonetheless ♥️🤗🌴 continued Blessings♥️🤗🌴Jose'

      That’s a great story Jose. I always think the cars must stop in front of your house in complete awe seeing all your tropicals. Driving by my house it’s basically hidden in the backyard. But you are addicted too! 😀

    Never met a palm addict before! I only have one single fan palm in my garden but it was a special one as I grew it from a tiny potted plant since 1988 and now it's twice as tall as my garage ( and very healthy too ) - I wish I had planted a few more back then ;))
    I am now ( experimenting ) growing a Chilean wine palm ( Jubaea chilensis ) in my office with artificial lighting ( I turn the lights on at night before going to bed ) I read that it's the most cold-hardy palm species. I am located in Vancouver, B.C. which has mild winter (rainy cold & snow on the ground but gone in 2 weeks kind of winter ) Summer could be quite hot but only last a couple of months around July & August, My Chilean wine palm is now about 3 ft tall - so I am weary about bringing it outside yet - not knowing what is my next steps.
    So, since I am pretty sure you're an expert in palm trees - may be you can offer some guidance for me?

      Hi there. Thank you for watching. I love Chilean Wine Palms. Mine is a hybrid (Part Chilean, part Butia) but I would think in Vancouver you would be just fine with that outside since it is so hardy. You should have a lot Trachycarpus (windmill palms) in your area.
      I would definitely wait until spring but then put that tree outside. You're in a great planting zone

    Is there no way to just place heaters around each tree?

    • @newyorktropicalgarden9364
      @newyorktropicalgarden9364  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well that’s essentially what I am doing. Building an insulated structure that keeps the cold out and providing heat via incandescent Christmas lights.

      It’s true. Someone asked me last week how much I spend on my garden. That’s something I never want to know. 😀

    How do you deal with spider mites on those indoor palms all winter? I can’t have birds of paradise for this very reason. Do you struggle with spider mites on your palms indoors?

    • @newyorktropicalgarden9364
      @newyorktropicalgarden9364  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Plantplague I hate spider mites. They’re always a problem. I spray with horticultural oil. I usually pick a warmer day in December and take the big palms out and spray them down. I usually end up doing this in February too. But yes, I check constantly
