It’s amusing that the song Running Up That Hill and the Hounds Of Love album formed a resurgence of interest in Kate Bush in the 1980s, and they’ve now done the same in the 2020s 😃

I prefer the B side of Hounds of love called The 9th Wave. Side A was the side to keep the record companies happy, it the B SIDE is the REAL. album that Kate wanted to make.

Listening to her mature voice when she did her final tour in 2014 was a profound experience. She had lost none of her range, none of her expressiveness, none of her power. And yet it was as different from this as night is to day- but no less beautiful. I consider her among the greatest of rock singers- with Aretha Franklin, and Annie Lennox and Annie Haslam- but her willingness to experiment and to take control of her musical life was well ahead of her time.

Great choice of vocalists, love Annie Haslam and her recordings with Renaissance as well as her solo stuff. You could add Maggie Bell and Christine MacVie to that list.

I enjoy Stranger Things, but I seriously think the best thing to come out of the show was an entire new generation discovering Kate Bush.
As an extra bonus, Metallica is also gaining a new generation of fans.

Kate can create so many colours in her sound by very simple actions. You've noted the 'wide' sound, for instance. I love how Kate works with both tenderness and defiance in her singing, it's so effective. Thanks for interesting videos about singing. I was a singer at London College of Music, mostly Lieder and music theatre. Your comments would've really helped me!

My first experience with Kate was on "Saturday Night Live" in 1978 (yes, I'm old,) and I've been a fan of her's ever since. There's a live performance of this song from a concert, that features Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, who "discovered" Kate when she was a teen. Her entire catalog is amazing! If you ever get a chance, try and watch her concert video, "Kate Bush, Live at Hammersmith Odeon" from 1979, it's amazing to see her perform and dance!

I have been a fan since this and the album Hounds of Love came out in the mid 80s. She's one of those hyper-unique, un-copyable singers whose voice will stick in your head after you have listened to anything of them for the first time and you'll never get bored of them, like with David Bowie or Tom Waits or Björk.

Well, we can thank Stranger Things for introducing a lot of younger people to good music from the old days, when the formulaic music wasn't pushed down the throats of people by algorithms. Because nowadays exciting artists don't break through because of those computer programs.

Don't feel too bad, I was a kid in the 80s and I had never heard this song until the ST rebirth. The only thing I remember about Kate Bush was her duet with Peter Gabrielle on Don't Give Up.

@@1972LittleC Formulaic music has been pushed down our throats since the invention of media controlled radio waves. TV made it even worse.
Don't blame the internet for a problem that has existed since the 50's.

To your point at the end of your video about Kate's resurgence, It's very cool to see a lot of artists having a second go around because of social media apps such as TikTok. I recently saw an interview on Australian 60 Minutes with Billy Joel where he described his audience as having more young people than ever before, mostly due to the massive play of his song Zanzibar on TikTok.
I think record companies really need to look at the big picture when it comes to reactors such as yourself and the blocking of content because I guarantee that with the help of people like you they are seeing upticks in sales directly from new audiences being exposed to great music that they would otherwise never hear! Keep up the great work Beth! Rawr!

Kate Bush fan since the 70s here - I loved 'Running Up That Hill' in 1985 when it was first in the UK charts, then in 2012 when it appeared in the closing ceremony of the London Olympics - note that the dancers of the Olympics closing ceremony, used her movements in their performance. When I watched Stranger Things, I was over the moon. I was also ecstatic that another of my favourites - Siouxsie and the Banchees, Spellbound was used in the closing credits - The Duffer Brothers really do have good musical tastes.

Back in the day about 1990 before cd's took over records and casetes were the norn, i remenber swing out sister and kim wilde, spelt her name correctly these two were real breaths of frest air. The kate bush song sounds very 90's , the motels. Now again i have plenty o work to do and with a little help from my friends who are well taken care of.

It reminds me again that Beth needs to check out the Dutch metal band "Blackbriar." The singer there, Zora, is a big Kate Bush fan, I believe. You can certainly hear the influence in her vocals, as I made the connection even before I heard Zora was a big fan of Kate. Blackbriar also makes music about dark fae and supernatural things. They are very talented and their videos are pretty cool too.

Hey Beth, I love your channel and you do a great job with each new video… I think it’s great how you don’t discriminate any genre or style of singing at all and keep it very diverse. That being said, I think you have to do Chino Moreno from Deftones. You’ve done Manyard James Keenan from Tool and they both did a song together called Passenger. Now it’s tough for me to decide on a great Deftones song to showcase Chinos vocals and range however, one obscure one that definitely shows just how special chino’s voice is would have to be knife party. The song in itself doesn’t have too much over the top vocals to it until about 3/4’s into the song during this one main break. What he does with his voice is absolutely insane. I can only imagine he was classically trained vocally in order to still after 30yrs maintain his vocals even with all the screaming he does every night, but the control of his voice along with the fact that his voice from studio to live is nearly indistinguishable. It blows my mind how absolutely incredible he sounds live and still sounds to this day live. You should look into him and try to make a video of Chino Moreno from Deftones. I’m sure your rock fans would very much appreciate it and be very happy that you did so. Thanks Beth, keep roaring

I actually suspected this to be full-on lip-synch, and not just backing tracks and audio fill... Lene Lovich was doing the flip-up stuff you mention at 5:20... couple other Germans too. but I think Kate actually was influenced by Irish vocal folk traditions more than any pop stuff. I always heard the two core differences with her- her high range, and her Celtic phrasings and influences,... but I really think this "performance" was audio-synching.

I agree about the lip-synch, as it sounds too much like the album.
But as long as this version gets to stay up, I don't see a problem with Beth's analysis.
If a live version is really needed, there is the Bush-Gilmour version from 1987. That is definitely not pre-recorded.
Or the version she made for the 2012 London Olympics might be of interest for how her voice changed over 30 years.

The only thing you said that I disagree with is that she usually sings with a very high voice full of twang… She only really did that for Wuthering Heights. At least that extreme. Most of her songs are sung like this, from what I found. She does have other songs where she uses a higher voice or some twang , but it’s an intermittent spurts, not like she sings Wuthering Heights.

Try checking out the actual proper live version probably one and only time around that time it was done live with a band, done at The Secret Policeman's 3rd Ball in 1987. Enter Dave Gilmour, Kate Bush Running Up That Hill (you want the one from Pink Floyd channel). I say proper live as obviously theband are miming playing instruments but Kate probably singing live but the Policeman's Ball one you actually hear what it should be like properly.

Note that they are just moving to the studio recording It's especially obvious in the percussions. The drummer can't do all those different sounds with a single drum.
I suggested this already a few months back, but please have a look a Volbeat/Michael Poulsen.

Bush said the lyrics address the inability of men and women to understand each other. She imagined that by making "a deal with God", they could exchange places and reach a greater understanding. The song was originally titled "A Deal with God", but representatives at EMI Records feared this would make it unpopular in more religious countries. The album version of the song is listed as "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)".
The music video features Bush performing an interpretive dance with dancer Misha Hervieu. The video was directed by David Garfath while the dance routines were choreographed by Diane Grey.Bush and Hervieu are shown wearing grey hakama.Bush wanted the dancing in "Running Up That Hill" to be more of a classical performance. She stated that dance in music videos was "being used quite trivially, it was being exploited: haphazard images, busy, lots of dances, without really the serious expression, and wonderful expression, that dance can give. So we felt how interesting it would be to make a very simple routine between two people, almost classic, and very simply filmed. So that's what we tried, really, to do a serious piece of dance."
The choreography draws upon contemporary dance with a repeated gesture suggestive of drawing a bow and arrow, intercut with surreal sequences of Bush and Hervieu searching through crowds of masked strangers. At the climax of the song, Bush's partner withdraws from her and the two are then swept away from each other and down a long hall in opposite directions by an endless stream of anonymous figures wearing masks made from pictures of Bush and Hervieu's faces. MTV chose not to show this video (at the time of its original release) and instead used a playback "live" performance of the song recorded at a promotional appearance on the BBC TV show Wogan. According to Paddy Bush, "MTV weren't particularly interested in broadcasting videos that didn't have synchronized lip movements in them. They liked the idea of people singing songs.".

The only version of this song that is anywhere as good as Kate Bush's version was done by Track and Field. The best way to watch a video of this song by them, is to see the one done in the show Warehouse 13, Season 3 Episode 11, "Emily Lake". It is a thousand times more powerful if you've watched the series up to that point. Honestly it is one of the most moving parts of any series I've ever seen. Claudia screaming sends chills!

I believe that Kate here was lip synching. Of course the music too was the studio version. To my knowledge, the only live version Kate ever sang (at least until the Before the Dawn concerts) was this one, from The Secret Policeman's Third Ball in 1987, featuring a guitar player that you all know: th-cam.com/video/Lk7AVm0Ome0/w-d-xo.html
